Künstlerbiographien sind seit jeher eine beliebte Darstellungsform der Kunstgeschichte. Eine Untersuchung der Genese dieser Textgattung fehlte jedoch bislang. Nahezu zweihundert Jahre waren die in der Tradition Vasaris entstandenen Viten vorherrschend. Nach 1700 wandten sich von dieser Frühform der Biographie allerdings auch jene Autoren ab, denen es weiterhin ein Anliegen blieb, "Geschichte der Künstler" zu vermitteln, jedoch erprobten sie innerhalb der Künstlergeschichte neue methodische Ansätze. In diesem Buch wird erstmals die historische Entwicklung dargestellt, in deren Verlauf sich die topos- und anekdotenreiche (...) Vita zur wissenschaftlichen Künstlerbiographie wandelte. In diesem Prozess kristallisierten sich die entscheidenden strukturellen Merkmale heraus, die noch heute für das Genre charakteristisch sind. So lässt sich für die Künstlerbiographien im 18. und in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein ähnlicher Verwissenschaftlichungsprozess feststellen wie für die anderen historiographischen Gattungen dieser Jahrzehnte. Das zeigt die Analyse einer Reihe bedeutender Biographien vor allem zu Künstlern der Renaissance wie Dürer, Cranach und Raffael, die in dieser Zeit im deutschsprachigen Raum entstanden. Dabei wird vornehmlich die Umgewichtung im Verhältnis von Lebensbeschreibung und Werkanalyse systematisch nachgezeichnet. Besondere Bedeutung kommt in der Untersuchung dem Mythos der Kongruenz von Künstlerleben, Charakter und Œuvre zu. Während der zentrale Topos vom "tugendhaften" und "erfinderischen" Künstler in der Vita noch zu einer Unterscheidung zwischen empirischer Person und Künstlerexistenz zwang, gelang es im Rahmen des biographischen Konzeptes der "Künstlerbiographie" zunehmend, die beiden Aspekte unter dem Begriff des "Genies" zu vereinen. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bildet die Rekonstruktion der Rezeptionsgeschichte der Künstlerbiographien. Die zahlreichen theoretisch-methodologischen Reflexionen in den Jahrzehnten zwischen 1820 bis 1840 zeugen von dem Versuch der frühen Kunsthistoriker, die Biographie zu einer führenden Methode der Kunstgeschichte zu etablieren. Es werden auch die Dispute untersucht, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und den ersten Jahrzehnten nach 1900 für die Kanonisierung der Kunstgeschichte als Wissenschaft grundlegende Bedeutung hatten und bei denen der biographische Ansatz eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Nicht zuletzt die vernichtende Kritik Heinrich Wölfflins, des Verfechters einer "Kunstgeschichte ohne Namen", der die Biographie der Unwissenschaftlichkeit bezichtigte, hat entscheidend dazu beigetragen, diese, wenngleich nicht aus dem Schrifttum, so doch aus der Wissenschaftsgeschichte zu verdrängen. Erst der fundamentale Paradigmenwechsel von der Künstlergeschichte hin zur überpersönlichen Stilgeschichte, der sich ab der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts vollzog, konnte jahrhundertelang den Blick auf die Tatsache verstellen, dass der biographische Aspekt der Kunstgeschichte damit keineswegs obsolet geworden ist. (shrink)

Neo-Scholastic metaphysics plays an outstanding role in 17th century philosophy. The beginnings of the modern scientific view of the world originate from precisely the same time. With reference to the anatomist Francis Glisson (ca. 1597-1677), this study investigates the significance of school metaphysics for the inception of a new form of natural philosophy. Heinrich Rickert (1863-1936) war einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Philosophen vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und gilt neben Wilhelm Windelband als einer der Hauptvertreter der südwestdeutschen Schule des Neukantianismus. Seine auch heute noch anregende Philosophie hatte großen, interdisziplinären wie internationalen Einfluss. Die philologisch-kritische Ausgabe macht die Schriften endlich wieder verfügbar.

The Posthuman Child combats institutionalised ageist practices in primary, early childhood and teacher education. Grounded in a critical posthumanist perspective on the purpose of education, it provides a genealogy of psychology, sociology and philosophy of childhood in which dominant figurations of child and childhood are exposed as positioning child as epistemically and ontologically inferior. Entangled throughout this book are practical and theorised examples of philosophical work with student teachers, teachers, other practitioners and children (aged 3-11) from South Africa and Britain. In feminist media studies, the growing body of research on media production has indicated that journalism remains divided along gender lines. The purpose of this study is to address the lack of relevant multi-method research on gender inequality in journalism. To assess the structural position of women in the journalistic workforce, the authors conducted a large-scale survey of journalists in Belgium. The survey results were explored in more depth by conducting qualitative interviews with 19 female journalists. The analysis confirms the (...) existence of all traditional barriers that women journalists experience. The added value of this study is that it enumerates several additional difficulties, and offers insight into the strategies that the respondents use to deal with gender-related career obstacles. These strategies were associated with the degree of flexibility in the newsroom for journalists with children, the choice to work part-time or freelance, and the use of new communication technologies. In this paper non-normal worlds semantics is presented as a basic, general, and unifying approach to epistemic logic. The semantical framework of non-normal worlds is compared to the model theories of several logics for knowledge and belief that were recently developed in Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is shown that every model for implicit and explicit belief (Levesque), for awareness, general awareness, and local reasoning (Fagin and Halpern), and for awareness and principles (van der Hoek and Meyer) induces a non-normal worlds (...) model validating precisely the same formulas (of the language in question). Heinrich Rickert (1863-1936) fut, avec Windelband et Lask, l'un des principaux representants de l'ecole neokantienne de Heidelberg, qui se differencie essentiellement de l'ecole de Marbourg par la facon dont elle redefinit l'idealisme transcendantal a partir de la problematique de la validite, heritee notamment de la philosophie de Lotze. Les six articles reunis ici, publies par Rickert dans la revue Logos entre 1911 et 1932, dessinent les grandes lignes d'une philosophie systematique des valeurs qui ne se veut pas seulement une theorie (...) transcendantale du valoir dans son opposition a l'etre, mais aussi, en tant que doctrine des visions du monde, l'elaboration d'une reponse philosophique a la question du sens de la vie. A cote de recherches architectoniques portant sur la determination et l'articulation des differents domaines axiologiques, mais aussi sur les problemes generaux lies a la definition de la philosophie comme doctrine des valeurs, ces articles entretiennent une constante polemique a l'endroit de tout intuitionnisme et de toute philosophie de la vie. Contre le biologisme qui fait du vivant la valeur absolue et contre la denonciation intuitionniste de la science comme intellectualisme, l'affirmation de la transcendance des valeurs garantit pour Rickert le droit d'une philosophie scientifique et critique de la culture, qui en apprehende la vie propre en rendant compte de l'articulation des valeurs et de l'effectivite empirique au sein d'un systeme des valeurs qui reste ouvert sur l'infinie nouveaute et l'inepuisable richesse du monde historique. This radical, profoundly scholarly book explores the purposes and nature of proof in a range of historical settings. It overturns the view that the first mathematical proofs were in Greek geometry and rested on the logical insights of Aristotle by showing how much of that view is an artefact of nineteenth-century historical scholarship. It documents the existence of proofs in ancient mathematical writings about numbers and shows that practitioners of mathematics in Mesopotamian, Chinese and Indian cultures knew how to prove (...) the correctness of algorithms, which are much more prominent outside the limited range of surviving classical Greek texts that historians have taken as the paradigm of ancient mathematics. Der Begriff ‚Bioethik‘ bezeichnet zumeist denjenigen Teilbereich der Angewandten Ethik, der sich mit dem Umgang mit Leben bzw. Lebewesen beschäftigt. Die Bioethik lässt sich ihrerseits in die Teilbereiche Medizinethik, Tierethik und Umweltethik untergliedern. Auch wenn diese Untergliederung durchaus gebräuchlich ist, zeigt sie doch, dass thematische Zuordnungen und disziplinäre Grenzziehungen in der Angewandten Ethik nicht unproblematisch sind.

Die Forschungs- und Wissenschaftsethik ist diejenige Teildisziplin der Angewandten Ethik, die sich mit ethischen Problemen von Forschung und Wissenschaft beschäftigt. Man kann die Forschungsethik in drei Bereiche gliedern: Ein erster Bereich hat Prinzipien und Normen zum Gegenstand, die für alle Wissenschaftler als Wissenschaftler gelten. Ein zweiter Bereich ist mit Methoden befasst, die in der Wissenschaft zur Anwendung kommen. Ein dritter Bereich der Forschungsethik beschäftigt sich schließlich mit den Zielen von Forschung bzw. mit ethischen Fragen, die solche Ziele aufwerfen.

Understanding between care providers and patients with stroke and aphasia: a phenomenological hermeneutic inquiry The present study illuminates the understanding in communication between formal care providers and patients with stroke and aphasia. Five care providers and three such patients participated in the study. Video recordings were made during conversations about pictures (n = 15), and the care providers were also interviewed (n = 15) after the video‐recorded conversations. A phenomenological hermeneutic method of interpretation of the interview text was used. The (...) findings showed that a range of conditions for ‘understanding and being understood’ in the communication on the part of the care providers exists. These different conditions are: lacking both knowledge and understanding; having knowledge but not necessarily accompanied by understanding; and being in understanding. Within the condition ‘being in understanding’, the care providers create a feeling of at‐homeness in a relaxed atmosphere and thus have the opportunity to be in ‘understanding and being understood’ together with the patient. The condition ‘being in understanding’ appears in connection with the care providers’ creating of a ‘calm liturgy of caring’ by mediating humility and calm vitality affects to the patients, and further, when needed, being present on the level of mystery, i.e. caring communion.
