A persuasion dialogue is a dialogue in which a conflict between agents with respect to their points of view arises at the beginning of the talk and the agents have the shared, global goal of resolving the conflict and at least one agent has the persuasive aim to convince the other party to accept an opposing point of view. I argue that the persuasive force of argument may have not only extreme values but also intermediate strength. That is, I wish (...) to introduce two additional types of the effects of persuasion in addition to successful and unsuccessful ones (cf. Van Eemeren and Houtlosser in Argumentation 14(3):293–305, 2000; Advances in pragma-dialectics. Sic Sat, Amsterdam, 2002; Walton in A pragmatic theory of fallacy. University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa, 1995; Walton and Krabbe in Commitment in dialogue: basic concepts of interpersonal reasoning. State University of New York Press, Albany, New York, 1995). I propose a model which provides for modified versions of the standpoint of an agent needed in order to bring about two possible outcomes of a persuasion dialogue. These two outcomes I label partially-successful and over-successful. I call the potential, not yet verbalised, standpoint of an agent here the original topic t. Based on some aspects of relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson in Relevance: communication and cognition. Blackwell, Oxford, 1986; Wilson and Sperber in The handbook of pragmatics. Blackwell Publishing, Malden, 2006), I explain that the modified version of the original topic t is an implicature created from the original topic t and from a specific mental topic which belongs to, what I call the beneficial cognitive model (hence BCM). This is a descriptive study (_N_ = 243) of how Polish undergraduates and graduates perceive face to face arguing. We had some reasons to suppose that they would not be especially aggressive. The Polish culture has a number of proverbs warning against combative arguing, with “agreement builds and disagreement destroys” being illustrative. In addition, up until 1989 public dissent and open disagreements were suppressed by the government, and older generations often found it prudent to avoid arguing. We compared Polish results (...) with previously reported data from the U.S. and Ukraine. We did, in fact, find that Polish orientations were less aggressive and more other-oriented than the two comparison nations. We also discovered Poland was more wary of engaging in interpersonal conflicts. Distinct sex differences appeared when we compared Polish men and women, with men being more forceful. Correlational patterns, especially concerning argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness, were largely consistent with those originally found in the U.S. Power distance continues to have important connections with the standard argument orientation measures, but its patterns of correlation are not entirely consistent across the relatively small number of nations where the variable has been studied. Building on our diverse research traditions in the study of reasoning, language and communication, the Polish School of Argumentation integrates various disciplines and institutions across Poland in which scholars are dedicated to understanding the phenomenon of the force of argument. Our primary goal is to craft a methodological programme and establish organisational infrastructure: this is the first key step in facilitating and fostering our research movement, which joins people with a common research focus, complementary skills and an enthusiasm to work (...) together. Different approaches analyze the strength of a natural language argument in different ways. This paper contrasts the dialectical, structural, probabilistic (or Bayesian), computational, and empirical approaches by exemplarily applying them to a single argumentative text (Epicureans on Squandering Life; Aikin & Talisse, 2019). Rather than pitching these approaches against one another, our main goal is to show the room for fruitful interaction. Our focus is on a dialectical analysis of the squandering argument as an argumentative response that voids an interlocutor’s (...) right to assertion. This analysis addresses the pragmatic dimensions of arguing and implies an argument structure that is consistent with empirical evidence of perceived argument strength. Results show that the squandering argument can be evaluated as a (non-fallacious) ad hominem argument, which however is not necessarily stronger than possible arguments attacking it. (shrink)

In September 2018, the ArgDiaP association, along with colleagues from Germany and the UK, organised one of the longest and most interdisciplinary series of events ever dedicated to argumentation - Warsaw Argumentation Week, WAW 2018. The eleven-day ‘week’ featured a five day graduate school on computational and linguistic perspectives on argumentation (3rd SSA school); five workshops: on systems and algorithms for formal argumentation (2nd SAFA), argumentation in relation to society (1st ArgSoc), philosophical approaches to argumentation (1st ArgPhil), legal argumentation (2ndMET-ARG) (...) and argumentation in rhetoric (1st MET-RhET); and two conferences: on computational models of argumentation (7th COMMA conference) and on argumentation and corpus linguistics (16th ArgDiaP conference). WAW hosted twelve tutorials and eight invited talks as well as welcoming over 130 participants. All the conferences and workshops publish pre- or post-proceedings in the top journals and book series in the field. (shrink)

In this brief commentary of Kamila Debowska-Kozlowska’s insightful analysis of persuasive outcomes (Processing topics from the Beneficial Cognitive Model in partially and over-successful persuasion dialogues. Argumentation, 2014), I articulate some suggestions for future development of her ideas. My main claim is that, while instances of partially and over-successful persuasion are indeed worthy of further theoretical inquiry, the topical analysis proposed by Debowska-Kozlowska may benefit from integration with other approaches.

This book introduces the ethical, philosophical, and social legacy of Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848), emphasizing the theological dimension of his thought. The author situates Bolzano as a significant and influential figure in the late Enlightenment in Bohemia, which developed in the politically unfavorable times of the early nineteenth century.

Stullerova, K.. The Knowledge of Suffering: On Judith Shklar's 'Putting Cruelty First'. Contemporary Political Theory, 13, 23-45.

Judith Shklar’s dictum, ‘the worst evil of cruelty’, is well known. What this means for her political theory and how such theory is construed are rarely explored. This article maintains that Shklar’s turn towards cruelty/suffering has a specific role in the development of her political argument. It allows her both to curb her long-standing skepticism, and to use it creatively. This is because suffering must be examined from the perspectives of history and philosophy, which produce two sets of knowledge, each (...) limiting the overbearing tendencies of the other. The way Shklar uses the tension between history and philosophy for progressive purposes, and her idea that politics can mediate between history and philosophy, makes her a very contemporary theorist, similar to those who critically engage foundationalism without wanting to dispose of it completely. Approaching Shklar’s ‘Putting Cruelty First’ through her engagement with history and philosophy, and making use of the concepts of ‘realism’ and ‘weak ontology’ to do so are a more productive route to understanding her dictum than the usual one of examining it through the prism of her ‘liberalism of fear’. One of the fundamental methodological problems of economics as a separate science is the question whether economic theorists are able to restrict themselves to the description of facts without assessing them. Is it possible to create an economic theory utterly deprived of value judgements? In other words – is economics a positive science? This problem is still debatable, notwithstanding efforts to eradicate all value judgements from economic analysis and to treat it as a touchstone of the scientificity of economic reasoning. (...) The article concerns the life and work of the most important contemporary Spanish philosophers, Fernando Savater. It focuses on describing his activism and the reasons which led him to participate in the public life. The author also analyses the thinker’s two major concerns, which are anti-nationalism and the defence of democtratic values. The investigation shows that Savater’s view on the two issues is strictly related to his biography and the socio-political changes experienced by Spanish people in the last fifty years. (...) Článek mapuje vliv Wittgensteinovy filosofie na poválečnou etiku v Británii, a to přes ústřední etické problémy morálního pravidla a jednání na základě tohoto pravidla. Důležitý zlom způsobila masívní kritika novověkého „právního“ pojetí etiky soustředěného na úzký pojem morální povinnosti, v němž je morální jednání modelováno jako vedení určitým objektivně daným zákonem, který zvnějšku donucuje vůli. Důraz na věrohodnou psychologii jednání a nedůvěra k morální nutnosti, s níž takový obrázek pracuje, vedly velkou část autorů k příklonu k antickému etickému paradigmatu. To (...) – na rozdíl od novověkého, jež se úzce zaměřuje na epizodické jednání – vychází od zkoumání dobrého života, k jehož uskutečnění je zapotřebí dobrého charakteru. Morální jednání je tak vysvětlováno na pozadí ctnostného charakteru, který tak poskytuje i příslušnou morální motivaci.Po představení určité zjednodušené představy, jak lze tuto motivaci modelovat, přejdeme ke koncepcím, které na tuto představu kriticky reagují z wittgensteinovských pozic. Ústřední terč této kritiky tvoří nedostatečné pojetí vnímání situace, které je v praktickém kontextu třeba chápat již strukturovaně jako něco, co obsahuje hodnocení a reakci. Typické pro wittgensteinovské pozice je proto popření nezávislosti motivační a kognitivní složky v analýze jednání, a tedy popření vlivné, tzv. „humovské“ teorie motivace. Představíme dvě větve této kritiky: První rozpracovává aristotelskou ctnost „rozumnost“, tedy hlavní rozumovou ctnost, druhá navazuje na platónskou tezi o jednotné ctnosti. V závěru bude naznačen způsob analýzy morálního principu v duchu této školy. (shrink)

For many women and girls sexist and misogynistic language is an everyday experience. Some instances of this speech can be categorized as ‘sexist hate speech’, as not only having an insulting or degrading character towards the individuals to whom the speech is addressed, but also resonating with the entire group, contributing to its silencing, marginalization and exclusion. The aim of this article is to examine how sexist hate speech is handled in international human rights law. The argument derives from the (...) claim than that legal discourse should distinguish between ‘sexist speech’ and ‘sexist hate speech’, and that the later may be qualified as a form of violence against women. Then it analyses the approaches of two human rights protection systems—the United Nations and the Council of Europe system—towards the phenomenon of sexist hate speech, by taking their position towards hate speech in general as a point of reference. In both systems, sexist hate speech is being addressed more eagerly under the gender equality framework, including counteracting violence against women, than in their interpretation of hate speech under general human rights law. The article argues the importance of recognizing and addressing sexist hate speech both within the framework of gender equality instruments and anti-hate speech framework established by international human rights bodies. O presente artigo desenvolve um diálogo entre a teoria de gênero e a literatura feminina. Para tanto, utiliza-se a _Tetralogia napolitana_, obra da autora italiana Elena Ferrante, como objeto de análise. Busca-se fazer uma relação entre a vida privada das personagens e seus dilemas com casamento, família, maternidade, trabalho e de teorias a respeito da divisão sexual do trabalho, da dominação masculina e do cuidado. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa de tipo exploratório, levando como base de análise o material bibliográfico (...) e documental referentes ao problema em questão. Verifica-se como a divisão sexual do trabalho, a dominação masculina e a ética do cuidado estabeleceram condições desfavoráveis para as personagens ao longo de suas vidas. Concluindo que o campo literário é um cenário importante para estudos relacionados às temáticas de gênero e feminismo, seja por sua demonstração detalhada do cotidiano feminino, seja pela escrita feminina. Androgynia jako idea jedności i całości pojawia się w myśli Gastona Bachelarda w kontekście marzenia poetyckiego. To w nim bowiem – o czym dowiadujemy się z Poetyki marzenia - dochodzi do pojednania animy i animusa, żeńskiego i męskiego w jednej psyche. Marzenie będące spod znaku anima francuski filozof nazywa filozofią bytu androgynicznego, która ukazuje nam podwójną idealizację człowieczeństwa. Anima i animus, potwierdzające androgynię psyche, są momentami Ja. Ta dualna natura bytu psychicznego wyraża się poprzez dwa antagonizmy przedstawione za pomocą funkcji (...) realności (adaptacja do rzeczywistości i życia społecznego) i funkcji irrealności (samotność marzenia); myśli nadzorowanej (krytyka, cenzura) i wolnego marzenia (sympatia, przyjęcie, przyłączenie); pracy (wysiłek) i odpoczynku (rozluźnienie); niepokoju (projekt, antycypacja) i spokoju (obecność w sobie) - a zwłaszcza wokół dualności, która krystalizuje się w odróżnieniu umysłu naukowego (l’esprit scientifique) spod znaku animusa (pojęcia, wiedza) od umysłu poetyckiego (l’esprit poetique) spod znaku animy (obrazy, komunia dusz). Androgynia rozumiana jako życie integralne psyche dla Bachelarda jest perspektywiczna i wartościowa a próby jej poszukiwania utożsamia z pytaniem o sens ludzkiej egzystencji. Studia nad marzeniem ukazują jego fundamentalne znaczenie dla równowagi psyche. Tak rozumiana siła obrazów kreuje wówczas sztukę życia. W tym sensie, Bachelard staje się prekursorem nowego spojrzenia w dziedzinie refleksji nad problematyką obrazu – okazuje się, że to obraz odpowiada za relację, która zachodzi między człowiekiem a światem. The current study examines patterns of attachment/self-protective strategies and rates of unresolved loss/trauma in children and adolescents presenting to a multidisciplinary gender service. Fifty-seven children and adolescents (8.42–15.92 years; 24 birth-assigned males and 33 birth-assigned females) presenting with gender dysphoria participated in structured attachment interviews coded using dynamic-maturational model (DMM) discourse analysis. The children with gender dysphoria were compared to age- and sex-matched children from the community (non-clinical group) and a group of school-age children with mixed psychiatric disorders (mixed psychiatric (...) group). Information about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), mental health diagnoses, and global level of functioning was also collected. In contrast to children in the non-clinical group, who were classified primarily into the normative attachment patterns (A1-2, B1-5, and C1-2) and who had low rates of unresolved loss/trauma, children with gender dysphoria were mostly classified into the high-risk attachment patterns (A3-4, A5-6, C3-4, C5-6, and A/C) (χ2= 52.66;p< 0.001) and had a high rate of unresolved loss/trauma (χ2= 18.64;p< 0.001). Comorbid psychiatric diagnoses (n= 50; 87.7%) and a history of self-harm, suicidal ideation, or symptoms of distress were also common. Global level of functioning was impaired (range 25–95/100; mean = 54.88;SD= 15.40; median = 55.00). There were no differences between children with gender dysphoria and children with mixed psychiatric disorders on attachment patterns (χ2= 2.43;p= 0.30) and rates of unresolved loss and trauma (χ2= 0.70;p= 0.40).Post hocanalyses showed that lower SES, family constellation (a non-traditional family unit), ACEs—including maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence)—increased the likelihood of the child being classified into a high risk attachment pattern. Akin to children with other forms of psychological distress, children with gender dysphoria present in the context of multiple interacting risk factors that include at-risk attachment, unresolved loss/trauma, family conflict and loss of family cohesion, and exposure to multiple ACEs. The ongoing process of democratisation lead to the growing importance of the electoral systems that regulate the procedures of gaining and legitimizing power in democracy. Taking it into account it is worth asking about the relationship between these particular ‘game rules’ contained into electoral law and the respect of the rule of law, being one of the basic norms of a democratic system. A question then may be raised about the existence and the character of the relation between electoral systems (...) and the level of political corruption. It is worth noticing that besides the research conducted by political scientists and the representatives of various branches of social sciences the significant analysis of the issue have been presented by the economists. In this article a brief overview of the economic studies on the relationship between level of political corruption and the electoral systems is presented so as to assess to what degree this approach may be treated as fruitful. The aim of my presentation would be to try to look on the critical and artistic achievement of Stefan Kisielewski from the musical and literary perspectives. The ways of writing about music, the musical and literary metaphors, and finally connections between musical and literary language are the key issues which occupy not only literary critics but also musicologists. In the context of Kisielewski's works they become especially inspiring. His Dzienniki prove that music and literature are two different areas of activity. (...) Referring to chosen texts from the volumes: Muzyka i mózg, Z muzycznej międzyepoki, Z literackiego lamusa, I would like to think about the ways of writing about music and point the special features of the literary masterpiece, whose author is a writer, music critic, publicist and composer in one person. W artykule przedstawiono wybrane staropolskie teksty mistyczne kobiet (zarówno świeckie, jak i pozostających w kręgu zakonnym) na tle tradycji mistyków hiszpańskich Złotego Wieku. W tekście nakreślono sytuację geopolityczną Rzeczpospolitej i Hiszpanii w okresie XVI–XVIII wieku z naciskiem na specyfikę życia kobiet na peryferiach europejskich. W analizie posiłkowano się ustaleniami z zakresu geopoetyki oraz border studies, gałęzi literaturoznawstwa, które obecnie coraz częściej aplikuje się do badań komparatystycznych. Artykuł przybliża kobiece utwory anonimowe powstałe w kręgu karmelitańskim, które są interpretacjami wątków terezjańskich lub (...) aluzjami do konkretnych tekstów świętej Teresy i świętego Jana od Krzyża. Ponadto przytoczono tu teksty najbardziej znanych staropolskich pisarek zakonnych, Magdaleny Mortęskiej i Marianny Marchockiej, wskazując na zapożyczenia z ascetyczno-mistycznej literatury hiszpańskiej. W artykule zaprezentowano także wybrane wątki pisarek świeckich, których utwory mogą wskazywać na specyfikę życia na peryferiach – mogącą przyczynić się do wyboru ścieżki mistycznej. (shrink)

Implementing new school reforms in school practice is extremely challenging mostly because of teacher resistance to change, or uncertainty, fear, or nostalgia for the previous curriculum. Since 2016 a new preschool curriculum including a new early literacy curriculum has been in force in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to assess how well teachers follow the requirement to use a variety of texts in the classroom to promote early literacy development. The analysis is performed on 138 observations out of (...) a total of 215 structured observations, in which teachers used a text as part of an educational activity. The predominant use of narrative texts is linked to more traditional early literacy activities; however, the employment of different text genres relates to the use of different sources of text presentation, engagement with different ways of working with the text and is accompanied by different reading activities. W wielu państwach funkcjonują narodowe/centralne komitety bioetyki, których rolą jest monitorowanie i opiniowanie aktualnych problemów bioetycznych pojawiających się ze względu na postęp wiedzy medycznej oraz nauk biologicznych. Procedura ich powoływania oraz sposoby działania, a także wpływ na praktykę różnią się w poszczególnych krajach. UNESCO opracowała szereg wskazówek dotyczących organizacji i funkcjonowania tego typu ciał. W Polsce istnieje potrzeba sprecyzowania zasad działania narodowego/centralnego komitetu bioetyki. Celem tekstu jest przegląd prawnych możliwości powoływania i funkcjonowania komitetów bioetycznych o charakterze narodowym/centralnym wraz z przedstawieniem (...) ich roli oraz refleksją nad kształtem, miejscem, znaczeniem i funkcją tego typu ciała w warunkach polskich. The main goal in this paper is to present the legal rules connected with medical experiment on human beings in emergency medicine and to explain the scope, significance, and meaning of these rules, especially with regard to their interpretation. As the provisions about medical experiments truly make sense only if they can be observed by the whole “civilised” international community, they are presented in the context of international law with reference to Polish law. By considering the appropriate regulations of research (...) contained in legal documents, it is possible to formulate a catalogue of doctors’ duties and patients’ rights. This general catalogue refers to all kinds of medical research involving human beings. In the field of emergency medicine, general provisions are sometimes involved, and they are sometimes limited. The main and most important conclusion is that a medical experiment in emergency medicine is admissible only if previously indicated conditions based on general rules of conducting research are fulfilled. The article argues that the famous story about the strike, exile and return of the Romanaulosplayers, which is recorded in the sixth book of Ovid'sFastiand referred to by other Latin and Greek sources, is based on a narrative model that already existed in Greece in the Archaic period. The study draws parallels between the tale of the pipers and the myth of the return of Hephaestus to Olympus, suggesting that, apart from similar plots, the two stories share many motifs, such (...) as references to themes derived from comedy and satyr drama. Searching for a possible channel of transmission of the story from Archaic Greece to Augustan Rome, the study explores the presence of satyric motifs in Etruscan vase-painting and Roman processional rites. It is furthermore emphasized that many of these motifs, which also appeared in lost satyr-plays, are echoed in Augustan poetry. (shrink)

Even if the ordering of all natural number is (known to be) not definable from multiplication of natural numbers and ordering of primes, there is a simple axiom system in the language $(\times,<,1)$ such that the multiplicative structure of positive integers has a unique expansion by a linear order coinciding with the standard order for primes and satisfying the axioms – namely the standard one.

Celem artykułu jest analiza pojęcia „troski” na gruncie filozofii Sokratesa i Platona. Niniejszy tekst stanowi przyczynek do pojawiających się w dialogach Platona dwóch określeń troski: epimeleia heautou oraz melete thanatou. W celu opisania pojęć i ukazania relacji między nimi w pracy badawczej wykorzystano teksty autorstwa Platona, teksty domniemanego autorstwa Platona oraz współczesne opracowania myśli Sokratesa i Platona.

The aim of this article is to present the concept of man and image in Gaston Bachelard’s thought. Following the path of the antagonism of concept and image, psychoanalytical and hermeneutic interpretations, the author presents her own interpretation of Bachelardism based on anthropological reflection, asking about the strictly human world and its “being-in-the-world”. Its reading is based on the dynamism and the linkage between reason and imagination in the presentation of the world, which is expressed in the broadest sense in (...) the formula of the “illustrating self”. Artykuł stanowi krótkie wprowadzenie do koncepcji cienia będącej ważnym elementem jungowskiej psychologii analitycznej. Mimo że cień jest niechętnie dostrzegany przez ludzi, stanowi element każdej psychiki. Relacja jednostki z jej cieniem w znaczący sposób wpływa na jej życie, co zostało zaprezentowane w artykule. Stan tej relacji zależy od jednostki i może zostać poprawiony poprzez podjęcie opisywanej w artykule pracy z cieniem.

This article attempts to point out the main problem in research on workaholism, namely over-use of the term workaholism when describing symptoms or constructs which are not related to work addiction. Workaholism has one, negative pathological/dysfunctional form and can be differentiated from the healthy forms of over-engagement. Based on the analysis of one example of research results, this article explains that the nomenclature of „workaholic“ is not applicable to the case of over-engaged employees with healthy symptoms. The second aim of (...) the article is to argue that the invalid conceptualisation and measurement of workaholism can result in conclusions which do not really regard work addiction. (shrink)

The paper considers the problematic relation between a person and her action as it is expressed in the problem of blame and moral judgement. I argue that blaming someone for her action does affect our moral judgement of her, but does not imply condemnation of her moral character. I use the example of Dmitri Karamazov to show that a response to a particular situation, although shaped by the previous character of the person, does not follow from it and can in (...) turn affect and change the person's character by changing the way in which she perceives what is valuable. An article that reflects on the adaptation of a phenomenologically inspired approach within sociological epistemology. Using two sociological as examples perspectives – interpretivism and critical theory – we point at the normative assumptions common to both approaches. We suggest these are responsible for the impossibility of transgressing dichotomization and mediation – two features continuously reproduced within social sciences. With the use of phenomenologically inspired non-dichotomous epistemology we offer a way to work around these limitations. It is possible, we argue, thanks (...) to the application of the categories of intentionality and responsiveness, to ground sociology in a non-dichotomous, and hence expanded, paradigm. (shrink)

This study aims to identify the ethical challenges in the process of product marketing. It conducted a bibliometric study to evaluate the major ethical concerns in the area of product marketing. The data for the current study was extracted using the Scopus database. The study uses VOSviewer and Biblioshiny-bibliometrix to analyze the data. The results revealed that in the twenty-first century, ethical concerns and research related to pharmaceutical marketing, consumption behavior, and sustainability have significantly grown and are emerging as important (...) issues. The study is novel in its approach and develops a theoretical model to know ethical issues related to product marketing with multidimensional process (i.e., identification, search strategy, and analysis) for a long-term sustainable business success. By this study, the academicians and researchers will focus greater attention on the rapidly developing human-techno-centric world to fulfill the organizations’ service promises. The study contributes to the marketing ethics literature, particularly to the literature related to ethical issues in product marketing. (shrink)
