Covering the Hellenistic and Imperial periods in both pagan polytheistic as well as Jewish monotheistic settings, this edited collection focuses on individuation in everyday religious practices across the ancient Mediterranean as identified in institutional developments and philosophical reflections on the self.

Cicero’s treatise On Divination is among the most intense ancient discussions of divinatory practices, arguing as much against the background of a long and rich tradition in Greek philosophy as contemporary and recent Roman practices. Focusing on book 2, my contribution will reconstruct Cicero’s “ludic view” of divinatory ritual and extispicy in particular (2.26–41). I will argue that the reference to playing is an important part of Cicero’s argument. I will then use this ancient observation as a hermeneutic lens onto (...) divinatory practices and the materiality involved here. I will conclude on an enquiry into the question of how central this very materiality is for the construction of the divine and the establishment of a bidirectional relationship with it. (shrink)

Zusammenfassung Religion in der Großstadt ist ein brennendes Thema, nicht nur für die Forschung. Der Blick auf die Stadt als Hort der Säkularisierung ist durch neue Formen religiöser Präsenz, Debatten um Religion als kulturelles Erbe, durch blutige Pogrome und Erfahrungen der „fundamentalistischen Stadt” erschüttert worden. Der Blick auf Religion und Stadt in der Antike durch die Linse von Numa Fustel de Coulange kann einen unerwarteten Beitrag zur gegenwärtige Debatte liefern: nämlich dann, wenn man einen verengten Blick auf Polisreligion als Staatsreligion (...) überwindet. Der Aufsatz will die These plausibilisieren, dass religiöse Praktiken und Vorstellungen wichtig für die Stabilisierung und weitere Verbreitung von Städten in der Antike waren und sich Religion und Urbanität als zwei Seiten einer Medaille entwickelt haben. In diesem Sinne wird eine Weiterentwicklung des Begriffs „urban religion” als „urbanisierte Religion“ vorgeschlagen. (shrink)

Definitions and theories of religion have been developed and discarded in an ongoing debate, which has been fuelled as much by post-colonial critique, theories of modernity, and postmodernist positions, as by new foci on old and new media. By starting from the challenges to adequately describe historical phenomena that could be fruitfully compared to religious action in other geographical and chronological settings, methodological options are developed and theorised with regard to an adequate, that is, fruitful model and theory of religion. (...) More concretely, it is proposed to analyse ancient Roman religion as ‘lived ancient religion’ and to conceptualise this religion as religious agency, communication, and collective identity. The basis for this analysis is a recollection of the critique raised against an approach that had reduced ancient religion to ideological and ritual systems bolstering political and (in the context of Greek and Roman cities) ‘civic’ identities. Instead, I argue that the ancient evidence demands an approach that focusses on individual actors and their situational and strategic uses of religious communication. ‘Traditions’ are shaped and modified in such acts of ‘appropriation’.
