Validation and Psychometric Properties of the Minnesota Living With Heart Failure Questionnaire in Individuals With Coronary Artery Disease in Lithuania.Julija Gecaite-Stonciene, Julius Burkauskas, Adomas Bunevicius, Vesta Steibliene, Jurate Macijauskiene, Julija Brozaitiene, Narseta Mickuviene & Nijole Kazukauskiene - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
BackgroundHealth-related quality of life is known to be impaired in individuals with coronary artery disease, especially in those after a recent acute coronary syndrome. Heart failure is a common burden in this population that significantly contributes to worsening HRQoL. To accurately measure the level of HRQoL in individuals with CAD after ACS, disease-specific scales, such as the Minnesota living with heart failure questionnaire, are recommended. Nevertheless, to date, there has not been a study that would comprehensively evaluate the psychometric properties (...)

Psychological and Ontological Aspects of Causality According to the Philosophy of Sāṃkhya and the Philosophy of Gilles Deleuze.Julija Bonai - 2018 - Deleuze and Guattari Studies 12 (1):104-125.
Sāṃkhya, or the philosophy of Yoga, is considered to be one of the most influential traditional philosophies in India. A close reading of it can lead to the conclusion that Sāṃkhya's and Deleuze's philosophy share similar ontological assumptions, especially regarding the material field of immanence that manifests itself through every mode of being. Both philosophies assume modes or degrees of material coexistence that extend from the virtual, potential field of immanence, as something conditional and causal, to actual manifestation that is (...)

From computerised thing to digital being: mission (Im)possible?Julija Kiršienė, Edita Gruodytė & Darius Amilevičius - 2021 - AI and Society 36 (2):547-560.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the main drivers of what has been described as the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”, as well as the most innovative technology developed to date. It is a pervasive transformative innovation, which needs a new approach. In 2017, the European Parliament introduced the notion of the “electronic person”, which sparked huge debates in philosophical, legal, technological, and other academic settings. The issues related to AI should be examined from an interdisciplinary perspective. In this paper, we examine (...)

An Overview of Moral Distress and the Paediatric Intensive Care Team.Austin Wendy, Kelecevic Julija, Goble Erika & Mekechuk Joy - 2009 - Nursing Ethics 16 (1):57-68.
A summary of the existing literature related to moral distress (MD) and the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) reveals a high-tech, high-pressure environment in which effective teamwork can be compromised by MD arising from different situations related to: consent for treatment, futile care, end-of-life decision making, formal decision-making structures, training and experience by discipline, individual values and attitudes, and power and authority issues. Attempts to resolve MD in PICUs have included the use of administrative tools such as shift worksheets, the (...)

The paper discusses the epistemological points of departure, main findings and activities of schizoanalysis. The concept was introduced by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari and implies research of unconscious conditions for differentiation and change. The first part of the text presents ontological presuppositions of schizoanalysis, the second discusses the way it faces unconscious processes, the third explains its relation to the repetition compulsion, while the fourth and last part brings forth the ethical dimension implicated in its epistemological points of departure (...)

Internet Memes, Memory, and Orders of Repackaging.Julija Korostenskiene - 2021 - The Philosophy of Humor Yearbook 2 (1):111-136.
The present study explores the construction of humor in internet memes along two dimensions. The external dimension is concerned with humor in internet memes as opposed to verbal humor on the one hand and as opposed to humor in comics and caricatures on the other. The perceptive differences, stemming from the workings of the human memory, and the medium are posited as the two main differentiating factors. On the internal dimension, we explore manifestations of humor in light of the communicative (...)

    A Value-Based Approach to Teaching Legal Ethics.Julija Kiršienė & Charles F. Szymanski - 2012 - Jurisprudencija: Mokslo darbu žurnalas 19 (4):1327-1342.
Nowadays ethics plays a vital role in numerous professions. Due to social requirements and technical advances, changes in the accreditation rules in legal, economic, medical and engineering education have emerged in many countries, often requiring the inclusion of an ethics requirement in such professional programmes. In this work, the authors demonstrate that such changes are absolutely necessary in the legal profession in Lithuania. Specifically, the record low level of prestige of the judiciary and lawyers in the Lithuanian society and the (...)

The article examines the problem of compensation for the value of lost opportunity at the pre-contractual stage. It has been determined that such measure of recovery depends on the nature of pre-contractual liability. However, although the Supreme Court of Lithuania recognizes the possibility for the aggrieved party of pre-contractual negotiations to recover the value of lost opportunity, the motivation of the Supreme Court’s decisions is too incoherent. Moreover, Lithuanian courts have not yet adopted any methods of awarding and calculation of (...)

    Pejoratives and Testimonial Injustice.Julija Perhat - 2017 - Croatian Journal of Philosophy 17 (2):145-154.
Testimonial injustice is a hot topic in social epistemology. My own work is concerned with pejoratives (in particular, gender pejoratives for women), so in this paper I wish to connect them with such injustice. So, my present topic is testimonial injustice perpetrated by the serious use of pejoratives, in particular, gender pejoratives. It combines two strands: on the one hand, the work on testimonial injustice; and here I shall rely on Miranda Fricker’s work, and on the other hand, my own (...)

Degree of Language Experience Modulates Visual Attention to Visible Speech and Iconic Gestures During Clear and Degraded Speech Comprehension.Linda Drijvers, Julija Vaitonytė & Asli Özyürek - 2019 - Cognitive Science 43 (10):e12789.
Visual information conveyed by iconic hand gestures and visible speech can enhance speech comprehension under adverse listening conditions for both native and non‐native listeners. However, how a listener allocates visual attention to these articulators during speech comprehension is unknown. We used eye‐tracking to investigate whether and how native and highly proficient non‐native listeners of Dutch allocated overt eye gaze to visible speech and gestures during clear and degraded speech comprehension. Participants watched video clips of an actress uttering a clear or (...)

Intelligent and Autonomous: Transforming Values in the Face of Technology.Ignas Kalpokas & Julija Kalpokienė (eds.) - 2023 - BRILL.
Bringing together contributors from the disciplines of law, politics, philosophy, and communication studies, this volume develops an interdisciplinary vocabulary for thinking about the questions and antinomies of human-technology interaction while also resisting any deceptively straightforward synthesis. The topics discussed include the competition over and regulation of technology, the harm induced by autonomous technologies, and the place and role of humans in a world that is undergoing rapid and radical change.

    Reasons for requests.Mark Dingemanse & Julija Baranova - 2016 - Discourse Studies 18 (6):641-675.
Reasons play an important role in social interaction. We study reasons-giving in the context of request sequences in Russian. By contrasting request sequences with and without reasons, we are able to shed light on the interactional work people do when they provide reasons or ask for them. In a systematic collection of request sequences in everyday conversation, we find reasons in a variety of sequential positions, showing the various points at which participants may orient to the need for a reason. (...)

Guidelines for the Improvement of Legal Education in the Context of the Essential Quality Parameters of Higher Education (article in Lithuanian).Edita Gruodytė & Julija Kiršienė - 2011 - Jurisprudencija: Mokslo darbu žurnalas 18 (3):1177-1194.
Not only in Lithuania, but also in the other countries, there is a growing tendency among young people to choose a legal education. Law is a professional sphere of immense depth and breadth and it is evident that during several years in a school of higher education, designed to grant legal knowledge and skills, it is impossible to convey all aspects and nuances of the law. Legal education in a higher school is only the beginning of a lawyer’s education, while (...)

The modern doctrine of the “fresh start” reflects the differences between the past paradigm of punishment of the insolvent person and the current focus on the economic effectiveness and activeness. Global practice in the field of insolvency shows that the “limited liability rule” is eminently effective in the economic and social perspective. The appending threat of abuse and misapplication of the system might be neutralized through the legal regulation of prevention and rehabilitation means, which are analyzed in this article. The (...)

Legal Regime of Separate Property in a Marital Agreement: Is an Agreement by which it is Obvious that the Financial State of One of the Spouses is Superior Enforceable?Aušrinė Pasvenskienė & Julija Kiršienė - 2009 - Jurisprudencija: Mokslo darbu žurnalas 118 (4):167-198.
Under the Lithuanian legislation, current and future spouses are allowed to sign marital agreements by which their property rights and obligations are set. However, it underlines that in some cases the court may declare the whole agreement or some of its terms unenforceable. The legislator does not specify which particular terms may be declared unenforceable. Therefore, the implementation of the spouses’ right to choose the terms they want is put under doubt. As a result, it is very important to find (...)

Institutional pressures and the adoption of responsible management education at universities and business schools in Central and Eastern Europe.Lutz Preuss, Heather Elms, Roman Kurdyukov, Urša Golob, Rodica Milena Zaharia, Borna Jalsenjak, Ryan Burg, Peter Hardi, Julija Jacquemod, Mari Kooskora, Siarhei Manzhynski, Tetiana Mostenska, Aurelija Novelskaite, Raminta Pučėtaitė, Rasa Pušinaitė-Gelgotė, Oleksandra Ralko, Boleslaw Rok, Dominik Stanny, Marina Stefanova & Lucie Tomancová - 2023 - Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility 32 (4):1575-1591.
Business schools, and universities providing business education, from across the globe have increasingly engaged in responsible management education (RME), that is in embedding social, environmental and ethical topics in their teaching and research. However, we still do not fully understand the institutional pressures that have led to the adoption of RME, in particular concerning under-researched regions like Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Hence, we undertook what is to our knowledge the most comprehensive study into the adoption of RME in CEE (...)

BackgroundThe ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines are widely endorsed but compliance is limited. We sought to determine whether journal-requested completion of an ARRIVE checklist improves full compliance with the guidelines.MethodsIn a randomised controlled trial, manuscripts reporting in vivo animal research submitted to PLOS ONE (March–June 2015) were randomly allocated to either requested completion of an ARRIVE checklist or current standard practice. Ovidijeva poezija ob soočenjih z Avgustovim režimom.Kajetan Gantar - 2019 - Clotho 1 (1):9-20.
