BackgroundLight to moderate physical activity, which includes walking, is associated with positive effects on physical and mental health. However, concerning mental health, social and physical environmental factors are likely to play an important role in this association. This study investigates person-place interactions between environmental characteristics and momentary affective states during walking episodes. A within-subject design is implemented, in which affective states and environmental characteristics are assessed while participants are walking outside.MethodsOn smartphones, coupled with a motion sensor, e-diaries were triggered as (...) soon as people walked 100 m outside. E-diaries assessed momentary affective states, and social interaction between 6 am and 10 pm over nine days. The percentage of greenness was determined afterward from recorded GPS and GIS data. Demographics were collected in advance via an online questionnaire. Multilevel models were calculated with R for 46 individuals.ResultsAffective state dimension energetic arousal showed a significant association with social interaction and greenness, i.e., participants rated energetic arousal lower when walking alone, and if there was less greenness vs. when interacting shortly with someone while walking, and being in situations with more greenness. Furthermore, associations with social interaction and greenness were found for dimension calmness: walking together with someone was associated with higher calmness, and the higher the proportion of surrounding greenness during a walk, the higher calmness was rated, i.e., participants were calmer. Significant associations with valence were not present.ConclusionThe findings indicate that the affective states varied significantly due to different social and physical environmental factors. In the future, the importance of environmental factors should be further investigated, e.g., by assessing environmental factors right in situations contrary to a subsequent imputation. Within-subject designs, and in particular triggered assessments with the addition of GPS, can aid in developing interventions for health-promoting urban environments. (shrink)

Die klassischen Gegenuberstellungen in der Philosophie gleichen oft dem Verschieben von Figuren im Theater oder auf dem Schachbrett. Das liegt daran, dass man alles fur einzeln und Identitat mit etwas fur selbstverstandlich halt. Es versteht sich aber nicht von selbst, dass alles, was ist, selbst ist. Selbstsein, Einzelheit, Identitat mit etwas haben tiefliegende und kontingente Voraussetzungen in der Dynamik des spurbaren Leibes. Von dieser hangt durch die subjektiven (nicht neutralen) Tatsachen des affektiven Betroffenseins auch das Selbstbewusstsein der Person ab. Um (...) sich mit etwas zu identifizieren, muss sie sich schon kennen, und dafur bedarf sie der leiblichen Dynamik, wie fur alles Konkrete der aus dieser sich ergebenden leiblichen Kommunikation. Durch die Ambivalenz von Eintauchen in den Leib und Auftauchen aus ihm wird die Person labil und zwiespaltig. Als Wege zu ihrer Stabilisierung und Integration werden hier die Fassung, die Komik und der Humor erortert. Alle Erfahrung wird auf leibliches Verstehen zuruckgefuhrt. Aber was ist der spurbare Leib im Gegensatz zum sichtbaren und tastbaren Korper? Er muss erst begrifflich freigelegt werden, denn seine eigentumliche Ausdehnung und Dynamik waren der europaischen Intellektualkultur unbekannt. (shrink)

A perceptual realism that is naive in a good way must be naively realistic about world and mind. But contemporary self-described naive realists often have trouble acknowledging that both the good cases of successful perception and the bad cases of illusion and hallucination involve internal experiential states with intentional contents that present the world as being a certain way. They prefer to think about experience solely in relational terms because they worry that otherwise we won’t be able to escape from (...) radical skepticism. I argue that experiential relations to objects require that their subjects be in internal experiential states. But this does not mean that these states are our epistemological starting point which can be known independently of any knowledge of the external world. We do escape the epistemological predicament of radical skepticism because the good cases are primary over the bad ones. But this is not because the good cases alone provide reasons for belief, but because we do not need a reason to think we are in a good case, but do need a reason to think we are not, and such a reason must come from a good case. So bad cases can only be thought of as deviations from good cases. And we can only understand experiences as states with contents distinct from their objects and present in good and bad cases once we understand misrepresentation, that is, bad cases, and therefore only as we ascribe knowledge of the external world to ourselves. Die Tiere werden durch Situationen gefangen und beschutzt, deren binnendiffuse Bedeutsamkeit ihren vitalen Antrieb in die Zukunft fuhrt. Der Mensch steht der Zukunft allein gegenuber und muss sich planmassig durch Auswertung seiner Erinnerung ein Bild von ihr machen, um Gefahren zu vermeiden und Chancen zu nutzen. Der jetzige Ausbildungsstand dieser Kunst ist die Naturwissenschaft, in deren Licht sich die Technik vorantastet. Wenn die Umwelt auf diese Weise hinlanglich gezahmt ist, wird das Bestreben drangender, sich mit ihr in ein harmonisches Verhaltnis (...) zu setzen. Dazu bedarf es der Besinnung des Menschen auf sein Sichfinden in seiner Umgebung. Das ist Philosophie. Sie wird aber kompliziert durch zwei Wege der Bekanntschaft des Menschen mit sich selbst. Einerseits ist es die Bekanntschaft mit den objektiven Tatsachen, deren Zuschreibung an den Menschen unsicher und zufallig ist. Unzweifelhaft und notwendig ist dagegen die Begegnung des Menschen mit sich selbst auf dem anderen Weg, im affektiven Betroffensein, denn er wird gleichsam auf sich gestossen, wenn ihm etwas nahe geht. Es sind diese subjektiven Tatsachen, die Hermann Schmitz von den objektiven abhebt und philosophisch entfaltet, wobei er zeigt, warum Idealismus - einschliesslich existentialistischer Ansatze - und Realismus - mit seinen Fortsetzungen Nominalismus, Positivismus, Konstruktivismus - ihre Ziele verfehlen. Die Person ist nur Person, indem sie zugleich prapersonal ist, und bringt doch etwas unvorhersehbar Neues auf: ihre Fahigkeit zur Selbstbestimmung durch Selbstzuschreibung als Fall mehrerer Gattungen. Mit ihrem Durchbruch aus der Gefangenschaft in Situationen entsteht die Welt als Antwort auf das menschliche Ansprechen mit satzformiger Rede, die aus Situationen schopft. Diese Doppelgesichtigkeit von Verankerung und Neubildung in der Epigenese wird in dem Buch an verschiedenen Themen verfolgt. Dazu gehoren u. a. Enge und Weite, Leib und leibliche Kommunikation, Sucht, Intentionalitat, (...) Geschichte und Praxis. Am Schluss steht ein Ruckblick auf das Abendland. Die antike Philosophie mit Welt- und Menschspaltung, das mittelalterliche Christentum mit Bindung des affektiven Betroffenseins an die Macht als zentrales Thema, die Neuzeit mit dem gegen Situationen und leibliche Kommunikation blinden Weltbild der Naturwissenschaft haben die Menschen vom Einblick in ihr wirkliches Leben abgelenkt. Die noch unverlorene Kraft kritischer Aufklarung lasst einige Hoffnung auf einen Neubeginn des menschlichen Selbst- und Weltverstandnisses im Abendland ubrig. (shrink)

For the last 40 years or so the is/ought gap, the fact/value distinction and the naturalistic fallacy have figured prominently in ethical debates. This longevity, however, has had an adverse side effect. So familiar have they become that they—and their respective rationales—have tended to become blurred. It is the purpose of this paper to explain why they should be kept distinct.

Van Inwagen proposes that besides simples only living organisms exist as composite objects. This paper suggests expanding van Inwagen’s ontology by also accepting composite objects in the case that physical bonding occurs (plus some extra conditions). Such objects are not living organ-isms but rather physical bodies. They include (approximately) the complete realm of inanimate ordinary objects, like rocks and tables, as well as inanimate scientific objects, like atoms and mol-ecules, the latter filling the ontological gap between simples and organisms in (...) van Inwagen’s origi-nal picture. We thus propose a compositional pluralism claiming that composition arises if and on-ly if bonding or life occurs. (shrink)

In this paper I first introduce Tomasello’s notion of thought and his account of its emergence and development through differentiation, arguing that it calls into question the theory bias of the philosophical tradition on thought as well as its frequent atomism. I then raise some worries that he may be overextending the concept of thought, arguing that we should recognize an area of intentionality intermediate between action and perception on the one hand and thought on the other. After that I (...) argue that the co-operative nature of humans is reflected in the very structure of their intentionality and thought: in co-operative modes such as the mode of joint attention and action and the we-mode, they experience and represent others as co-subjects of joint relations to situations in the world rather than as mere objects. In conclusion, I briefly comment on what Tomasello refers to as one of two big open questions in the theory of collective intentionality, namely that of the irreducibility of jointness. (shrink)

Mental explanations of behaviour are physical explanations of a special kind. Mental events are physical events. Mental explanations of physical behaviour are not mysterious, they designate events with physical causal powers. Mentalistic terms differ from physicalistic ones in the way they specify events: the former cite extrinsic properties, the latter intrinsic properties. The nature of explanation in general is discussed, and a naturalistic view of intentionality is proposed. The author shows why epistemological considerations rule out the elimination of "mentalistic talk" (...) from explanations of behaviour. (shrink)

El prejuicio más aciago de la filosofía es que su historia jalona rivalidades sangrientas, conflictos insuperables, superaciones radicales, reinicios absolutos, fines y clausuras. Se trata de una concepción pobre y desangelada de esta pasión que impulsa mi viaje por la tierra. El paisaje de lo trascendental se anima cuando se lo concibe como el trabajo conjunto de una saga de artistas embriagados por el pensamiento. Esto no quiere decir que se trate de una suave danza de almas bellas; por el (...) contrario, esa misma embriaguez lleva a enfrentamientos salvajes: hay interpretaciones en las que se nos va la vida, hay conceptos cuya importancia nos desvela, hay posturas que nos parecen escandalosas. Sin embargo, también cuando la danza se hace tan turbulenta que se parece más bien a una brutal pelea de box, lo que importa es esa violencia que fuerza a pensar, y no quién tiene razón. Discutimos porque pensamos juntos, nos respetamos cuando nos criticamos de forma salvaje. Así se construye el pensamiento común: en la tensión y no en la calma, en la pasión de la embriaguez que alterna afinidades radicales y diferencias que parecen irreconciliables.Este libro se propone sostener tal visión de la filosofía a través de un experimento crucial: mostrar que entrelazando a Hegel y a Deleuze podemos construir una potente ontología práctica, que tome la multiplicidad como prius, para dar cuenta del mundo y de la experiencia, donde se conjugan movimiento y devenir con identidades y persistencias. Con ese objetivo, a lo largo de estas páginas expondré a la multiplicidad como una fuerza capaz de determinarse en formas concretas y precisas. La alianza de Deleuze y Hegel nos brinda herramientas conceptuales preciosas para esa tarea: el primero nos ofrece esa ontología de la multiplicidad, mientras el segundo nos plaga de determinaciones sutiles hasta el agotamiento. Una lectura de Deleuze desde la perspectiva hegeliana abre nuestros ojos a la máquina de determinación y constitución de lo existente que se alimenta de los flujos y rizomas que lo han hecho célebre. 2007 will be remembered as the year in which the Tour de France died. Race leader and likely eventual winner, Michael Rasmussen, was eliminated near the end on an allegation of doping. Since the 1960s, the idealistic drug crusaders have been on a mission to reverse the course of history, and eliminate drugs from the sport. But this “zero tolerance” strategy to drugs has failed, as 2007's Tour spectacularly showed. Only around 10–15% of professional athletes are drug tested. Currently, it (...) is illegal to use erythropoietin (EPO) or blood doping to move your haematocrit from 48 to 49% even though some people will have a normal level of 49%. A regulated permissive policy would paradoxically reduce risk to athletes. The present system creates an environment of risk to the athlete. A rational policy on doping would allow safe performance‐enhancing interventions which are consistent with the spirit of a particular sport. (shrink)
