Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is the text which had the single greatest influence on Aquinas's ethical writings, and the historical and philosophical value of Aquinas's appropriation of this text provokes lively debate. In this volume of new essays, thirteen distinguished scholars explore how Aquinas receives, expands on and transforms Aristotle's insights about the attainability of happiness, the scope of moral virtue, the foundation of morality and the nature of pleasure. They examine Aquinas's commentary on the Ethics and his theological writings, above (...) all the Summa theologiae. Their essays show Aquinas to be a highly perceptive interpreter, but one who also brings certain presuppositions to the Ethics and alters key Aristotelian notions for his own purposes. This volume contains fourteen papers on Aristotelian and non-Aristotelian medieval accounts of weakness of will, many of which have not yet been the object of scholarly writing. The papers give insight into a variety of accounts of practical rationality that were directly or indirectly influential on modern thinkers. The temporal framework of the volume exceeds the Middle Ages on both ends by including Aristotle and authors from the Renaissance and the Reformation.

Is philosophy endangered by a scientific culture increasingly influenced by demands of utility and efficiency? What are the goals and intentions of philosophy, and what are the reasons that one practices philosophy at all? The main questions of this collection concern the self-understanding of philosophy. Prominent authors consider historical, systematic, and social approaches to this question and discuss possible answers. The purpose is not merely to legitimate philosophical practice but to understand what such practice consists in at all.

This article explores the epistemological ramifications of understanding Thomas Aquinas’ conception of truth in terms of a dynamic process of cognitive assimilation within the human psyche. In particular, the author addresses two potential pitfalls for his theory, namely ‘failed assimilation’ as the basis of false judgments and ‘negative assimilation’, i.e., correspondence to non-being: how is the human mind capable of assimilation to ‘nothing’ at all? Aquinas addresses these two problems in various passages throughout his works; the author connects and reviews (...) their arguments with regard to their philosophical cogency and attempts to answer the question of whether Aquinas ultimately succeeds in solving the several puzzles that ‘failed’ as well as ‘negative assimilation’ seem to create in his conception of truth. In order to check the correctness of this assumption, Aristotle’s notion of goodness is reconstructed by an analysis of his theoretical as well as his ethical writings. The picture which emerges shows that Aristotle does not understand goodness as a univocal term but as an analogical concept the focal meaning of (...) which is closely related to the perfection of the different natural things or species. Since Moore’s criticism presupposes a univocal definition of goodness, Aristotle’s treatment of this notion does not fall prey to it. Although his understanding of goodness is connected with his teleology of nature, Aristotle is not guilty of deriving ›ought‹ from ›is‹; therefore, his ethics is also immune to the second argument against the naturalistic fallacy which is usually traced back to David Hume. In deliberate contrast to the ethical intellectualism of Socrates, Aristotle develops a complex conception of virtues as character traits which are closely tied to the different elements and stages of their cultivation: in the gradual process of becoming good, ‘learning by doing’ is the central cornerstone for establishing a close connectivity between emotion and reason as well as between desire, decision and right action. Virtue as a perfection of human nature engenders the best possible integration of irrational striving with reason (...) in the soul and is thus the constitutive component of human flourishing. Ciceros De officiis, geschrieben 44 v. Chr., gehört zu den anerkannten Klassikern der Philosophie, ist aber in seinen philosophischen Dimensionen und Gehalten bisher nicht hinreichend für ein breiter interessiertes Fachpublikum im deutschsprachigen Raum erschlossen. Die Schrift behandelt zentrale Themen der antiken Moralphilosophie und ist eine der wichtigsten Quellen zur stoischen Ethik. Die Konzepte des Tugendhaften (honestum) und des Nützlichen (utile) werden sowohl begrifflich als auch kasuistisch untersucht und ihr Verhältnis genauer bestimmt. So entwickelt Cicero eine differenzierte Pflichtenethik, die im Rahmen (...) der berühmten Vier-Personen-Lehre auch ein Schlaglicht auf die philosophischen Wurzeln des Konzepts der Menschenwürde wirft. Das Werk ist eine Gelenkstelle in der Geschichte der Ethik und hat nicht zuletzt die Entwicklung der neuzeitlichen Deontologie (etwa bei Ch. Garve und I. Kant) entscheidend beeinflusst. Im Rahmen dieses Bandes erfährt De officiis zum ersten Mal eine philosophisch orientierte kooperative Kommentierung aus der Feder renommierter Fachleute, die das Werk sowohl für Studierende und Dozierende in Philosophie sowie Klassischer Philologie als auch für interessierte Laien zugänglich macht. Das Xργον-Argument, das Aristoteles selbst als das Kernstück bei der Bestimmung des gelingenden Lebens ansieht, findet sich in variierter Form sowohl in der Nikomachischen Ethik als auch in der Eudemischen Ethik. Die vorliegende Abhandlung rekonstruiert zuerst skizzenartig die beiden Argumentationsgänge zwecks Akzentuierung der an der Oberfläche der Argumentation sichtbaren Unterschiede. Diese Unterschiede werden anschließend darauf hin untersucht, ob sie Ausdruck einer genuin divergenten Tiefenstruktur der Argumente und ihrer Voraussetzungen sind, oder ob sie sich doch auf ein geteiltes Grundverständnis zurückführen lassen. Im Zentrum der Analyse stehen die Bedeutung und Funktion zentraler Grundbegriffe wie Xργον, τXλειον und áρετh sowie die daraus resultierende Interpretation der beiden εbδαιμονiα-Bestimmungen zum Abschluß der Argumente. Auf der Basis dieser Ausführungen wird entgegen der in der Forschung vorherrschenden dissoziierenden Interpretation der beiden Xργον-Argumente für eine unifizierende Lesart plädiert; aus dieser Interpretation werden abschließend einige Schlußfolgerungen für die Voraussetzungen eines adäquaten Verständnisses der aristotelischen εbδαιμονiα in toto gezogen. Argumentando de modo crítico para a identificação do tema na ética scotista, o autor acaba por expor, com isso, as premissas centrais de toda a metafísica da vontade e a ética da liberdade de Duns Scotus. This article tries to unearth and evaluate the hermeneutic potential of Nietzsche’s understanding of Socrates, which is highly ambivalent. While Socrates is sometimes depicted as an optimistic rationalist, Nietzsche finally portrays him as a kind of universal pessimist who ultimately denounces life, especially in his last words on his deathbed. This nihilistic interpretation is subsequently criticized in this article (with special emphasis on a closer look at the evidence in Plato’s Phaidon and Symposion) and superseded by a picture which is (...) still indebted to some of Nietzsche’s basic categories: Socrates appears as a carefully balanced mixture of Apollonian and Dionysian elements, thereby reflecting Plato’s major achievement in combining philosophy and poetry in his Socratic dialogues. Avicenna develops a highly original account of memory as one of the five internal senses. In this paper, I briefly reconstruct this conception and evaluate its influence on the faculty psychology which emerged in the Latin West from the 12th century onwards. Particular attention is paid to Thomas Aquinas’s harsh criticism of Avicenna’s denial of intellectual memory, which touches on several epistemological, anthropological and theological issues.

O autor analisa a validade de uma certa variante do “argumento ontológico" deAnselmo, a saber, a versão lógico-modal de Charles Hartshorne. Ele investiga, primeiramente, a origem dos argumentos de Hartshorne, partindo de uma interpretação de Anselmo; em segundo lugar, o argumento lógico-modal é apresentado, junto com as suas pressuposições e implicações. Finalmente, o autor propõe uma avaliação da abordagem de Hartshorne.

Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt den Versuch dar, an Hand des Beispiels von Thomas von Aquin den oft gänzlich übersehenen oder marginalisierten Beitrag des Mittelalers zur Problemgeschichte der Willensschwäche exemplarisch zu verdeutlichen. Eine Analyse seiner theologischen Schriften zeigt, dass er diesem Problem in Gestalt seiner Diskussionen zu incontinentia und dem Sündigen aus Leidenschaft größere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet hat. Dies findet seinen Niederschlag sowohl in einer vielschichtigen Analyse der Ursachen willensschwachen Handelns als auch in der bei ihm nachweisbaren Unterscheidung verschiedener Typen von Willensschwäche. (...) Auch aus seiner Behandlung der Gewissensthematik lassen sich einige wichtige Schlussfolgerungen für sein differenziertes Verständnis des Phänomens gewinnen. Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, dass die Einführung des Willensbegriffs in die Analyse des Handelns wider besseres Wissen gegenüber der antiken Diskussion einen substanziellen Fortschritt bedeutet: Erst hier wird Willensschwäche als systematisch befriedigende Erklärung des Phänomens verfügbar, ohne dass dadurch das genuine philosophische Problem dieser Form des Handelns entfiele.
