Understanding the God of Love.John Laracy - 2020 - The Lonergan Review 11:94-123.
In this paper I argue that the eternal unity of Lonergan’s “three divine subjects” must be understood in light of the eternal love of the divine persons, revealed in Christ’s relationship withthe Father. This new starting point in triune agapē need not threaten the integrity of Lonergan’s thought, as long as one reads his psychological analogy as a preliminary heuristic structure. Indeed, the tensions and developments in his own systematics justify this move.

The philosophy of superdeterminism is based on a single scientific fact about the universe, namely that cause and effect in physics are not real. In 2020, accomplished Swedish theoretical physicist, Dr. Johan Hansson published a physics proof using Albert Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity that our universe is superdeterministic meaning a predetermined static block universe without cause and effect in physics. Because of this new scientific understanding of our universe, the nature of miracles must be predetermined events that occur within (...)

Dasein disclosed: John Haugeland's Heidegger.John Haugeland - 2013 - Cambridge: Harvard University Press. Edited by Joseph Rouse.
At his death in 2010, the Anglo-American analytic philosopher John Haugeland left an unfinished manuscript summarizing his life-long engagement with Heidegger’s Being and Time. As illuminating as it is iconoclastic, Dasein Disclosed is not just Haugeland’s Heidegger—this sweeping reevaluation is a major contribution to philosophy in its own right.

The Spiritual Dimension: Religion, Philosophy and Human Value.John Cottingham - 2005 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
The Spiritual Dimension offers a new model for the philosophy of religion, bringing together emotional and intellectual aspects of our human experience, and embracing practical as well as theoretical concerns. It shows how a religious worldview is best understood not as an isolated set of doctrines, but as intimately related to spiritual praxis and to the search for self-understanding and moral growth. It argues that the religious quest requires a certain emotional openness, but can be pursued without sacrificing our philosophical (...)

Lask, Heidegger, and Nishida: From Meaning as Object to Horizon and Place.John Krummel - 2024 - In Tobias Endres, Ralf Müller & Domenico Schneider (eds.), Kyoto in Davos. Intercultural Readings of the Cassirer-Heidegger Debate. Boston: BRILL. pp. 242-264.
Emil Lask provides the bridge from Kant to phenomenology but also from Kant to Kyoto School philosophy. Heidegger and Nishida, contemporaneously but independently, took Lask's collapsing of Neo-Kantian hylomorphism in distinct directions. They accepted Lask's anti-subjectivism while moving beyond his object-centrism. Heidegger broadened Lask's notion of lived experience in the direction of the "horizon" explicated in terms of temporality. Nishida takes it in terms of a pre-objective "predicate,” indicative of the "place" wherein beings, objects, grammatical subjects are implaced. Both assume (...)

  14. Reliabilist Virtue Epistemology.John Greco & Jonathan Reibsamen - 2017 - In Nancy E. Snow (ed.), The Oxford Handbook of Virtue. Oxford University Press. pp. 725-746.
According to reliabilist virtue epistemology, or virtue reliabilism, knowledge is true belief that is produced by intellectual excellence (or virtue), where intellectual excellence is understood in terms of reliable, truth-directed cognitive dispositions. This essay explains why virtue reliabilism is a form of epistemological externalism, is a moderately naturalized epistemology, and is distinct from virtue responsibilism. We explain virtue reliabilism’s answers to various forms of skepticism, its solution to the Gettier Problem, and its explanation of the value of knowledge. We also (...)

We present several new studies focusing on “salience effects”—the decreased tendency to attribute knowledge to someone when an unrealized possibility of error has been made salient in a given conversational context. These studies suggest a complicated picture of epistemic universalism: there may be structural universals, universal epistemic parameters that influence epistemic intuitions, but that these parameters vary in such a way that epistemic intuitions, in either their strength or propositional content, can display patterns of genuine cross-cultural diversity.

  21. Analytical Foundations of Marxian Economic Theory.John E. Roemer - 1989 - Cambridge University Press.
Professor Roemer's goal in this book is to give a rigorous view of classical Marxian economic theory by presenting specific analytic models. The theory is not extended to deal with new problems, but it is deepened: Marxian theory is given micro-foundations and upon those foundations the author begins to rebuild a tightly constructed Marxian economics. The book begins, after a methodological introduction, with an examination of the Marxian notion of equilibrium and the theory of exploitation, and goes on to deal (...)

Five colloquia deal directly with Plato, while another discusses Heidegger's interpretation of Plato. Two colloquia deal with the Epicurean notion of preconception and with the Stoic conception of the good.

The scientific truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.John R. Helliwell - 2024 - Boca Raton: CRC Press.
There is a limited understanding amongst scientists, students and the public about realizing trust in scientific findings. This should be a paramount objective, or is it only about career ambition? What is the role of the individual? Scientists and the public need to know more about the link between the philosophy of science and the science research methods. There is a limited understanding of why accuracy is important and that it is not the same as precision. Also, there is often (...)

Maxwell's Demon Does Not Compute.John D. Norton - 2018 - In Michael E. Cuffaro & Samuel C. Fletcher (eds.), Physical Perspectives on Computation, Computational Perspectives on Physics. Cambridge University Press.
Must a Maxwell demon must fail to reverse the second law of thermodynamics? Standard attempts to show it must fail make use of notions of information and computation. None of these attempts have succeeded. Worse they have distracted both supporters and opponents of these attempts from a much simpler demonstration of the necessary failure of a Maxwell's demon that employs no notions of information or computation. It requires only Liouville's theorem and its quantum analog.
