Affective Assemblages of Material Culture: Qi Pao, Mahjong and Performance in Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution.Jiaying Sim - 2023 - Film-Philosophy 27 (1):29-49.
Using Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution (2007), this article illustrates how an affective mode of address is encouraged when one attends to the ways in which on-screen cinematic audio-visual spectacles are produced through the interaction of different bodies on-screen. Affective cinematic encounters open up other ways of understanding the female body as productive assemblages of everyday affective interactions and relationalities with other bodies within material culture. Particularly, I demonstrate an affective mode of address that attends to the interaction of cinematic objects (...)

The Crossroads of Norm and Nature: Essays on Aristotle's Ethics and Metaphysics.May Sim - 1995 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
A discussion of the intersections between Aristotle's works: Ethics and Metaphysics. It debates the ways in which - and even the extent to which - the two texts illuminate one another, examine Aristotle's methods and intellectualism and analyse issues of matter, form, potency and art.

Vision and abstraction: an empirical refutation of Nico Orlandi’s non-cognitivism.Christopher Mole & Jiaying Zhao - 2016 - Philosophical Psychology 29 (3):365-373.
This article argues against the non-cognitivist theory of vision that has been formulated in the work of Nico Orlandi. It shows that, if we understand ‘representation’ in the way Orlandi recommends, then the visual system’s response to abstract regularities must involve the formation of representations. Recent experiments show that those representations must be used by the visual system in the production of visual experiences. Their effects cannot be explained by taking them to be non-visual effects involving attention or memory. This (...)

The Principle of Dynamic Holism: Guiding Methodology for Investigating Cognition in Nonneuronal Organisms.Matthew Sims - 2023 - Philosophy of Science 91 (2):430 - 448.
Basal cognition investigates cognition working upward from nonneuronal organisms. Because basal cognition is committed to empirically testable hypotheses, a methodological challenge arises: how can experiments avoid using zoocentric assumptions that ignore the ecological contexts that might elicit cognitively driven behavior in nonneuronal organisms? To meet this challenge, I articulate the principle of dynamic holism (PDH), a methodological principle for guiding research on nonneuronal cognition. I describe PDH’s relation to holistic research programs in human-focused cognitive science and psychology then present an (...)

This review aimed at examining the related studies on the effect of English as a foreign language learners' psychological well-being and academic engagement as positive emotional constructs on learners' grit. The positive significant effect of psychological well-being on learners' grit has been confirmed in the literature review. Studies have shown that resilience, enjoyment, engagement, lack of depression, interest, and world meaningfulness can act as mediator variables in the relationship between psychological well-being and grit. Furthermore, few studies have been done on (...)

    A Philosopher Reigneth Not.Chen Jiaying - 2020 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 51 (3-4):230-235.
Editors’In this article, Chen addresses the political relevance of political philosophy, cautioning against direct application of philosophy in real politics. Rather than bring about good politics, a philosopher-king leads to terrible cultural life, for in such a political setting philosophy cannot but turn into ideology. A better way to understand such relevance is to think from the middle ground. The prosperity of cultural life is where the work of the politician and the work of the philosopher overlap and where philosophy (...)

Contemporary Chinese Philosophy in Light of Transplanted Words.Chen Jiaying - 2020 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 51 (3-4):216-224.
Editors’Chinese vocabulary today features a special group of words, namely, those that were Chinese words in the past but now have lost what they used to mean. Instead, they have become Chinese versions of foreign words that they have been used to translate. Chen calls these words, as well as the words coined solely for the purpose of translating foreign words, “transplanted words.” Most of the words we are using in theoretic discourse today are such transplanted words. Chen, in this (...)

Is It Important to Save Black Bears?Chen Jiaying - 2020 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 51 (3-4):225-229.
Editors’Bear bile is an important ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. Each year, many bears are rescued from illegal bear farms, where they are kept in cages and frequently used for bile harvest through tubes attached to their bodies. In this article, Chen defends bear-rescuing activists against the charge that they fail to prioritize the human suffering, for school dropout kids in China seem to deserve help more urgently than bears. Chen argues that such a utilitarian picture misrepresents practical deliberation in (...)

    On Dianoesis-Argumentation.Chen Jiaying - 2020 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 51 (3-4):194-215.
Editors’In this paper, Chen aims to elucidate the nature of dianoesis, starting from the basic fact that we already hold a certain belief before we begin to argue for it. It concludes that what dianoesis endeavors to achieve is the understanding of ways-and-patterns of things, so that our scattered understanding gets connected. The author then addresses frequent misconceptions about the nature of dianoesis, such as that genuine dianoesis equals reasoning from premises neutral to any prejudice or from the absolutely evident (...)

    Seeking Understanding Through Reflection.Chen Jiaying - 2020 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 51 (3-4):182-193.
Editors’ abstractThe first part of Chen’s paper illustrates the fact that reasons contained in common sense serve an explanatory role fairly well for everyday living. The inadequacy of commonsensical explanations for abnormal cases, however, breeds the desire to seek a unified explanation for all cases. Philosopher-scientists, as Chen characterizes them, hold the conviction that such an explanation is offered by speculative theories, which are created by reflecting on the reasons contained in common sense and then weaving them into a systematic (...)

  32. Constructing reality with models.Tee Sim-Hui - 2019 - Synthese 196 (11):4605-4622.
Scientific models are used to predict and understand the target phenomena in the reality. The kind of epistemic relationship between the model and the reality is always regarded by most of the philosophers as a representational one. I argue that, complementary to this representational role, some of the scientific models have a constructive role to play in altering and reconstructing the reality in a physical way. I hold that the idealized model assumptions and elements bestow the constructive force of a (...)

Do Product Characteristics Affect Customers’ Participation in Virtual Brand Communities? An Empirical Study.Zheng ShiYong, Li JiaYing, Wang HaiJian, Suad Dukhaykh, Wang Lei, Li BiQing & Peng Jie - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The virtual brand community has become an important marketing tool for companies. A successful brand community marketing strategy should attract a large number of consumers. Although past studies have revealed consumer motivations for participating in virtual brand communities, they fail to answer an important question: Why is it so easy for some virtual brand communities to attract users while others have such difficulty? In this study, product characteristics are hypothesized to be important factors that determine consumer motivation to participate in (...)

Social cognition of religion.Sims Bainbridge William - 2006 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 29 (5):463-464.
Research on religion can advance understanding of social cognition by building connections to sociology, a field in which much cognitively oriented work has been done. Among the schools of sociological thought that address religious cognition are: structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism, conflict theory, phenomenology, and, most recently, exchange theory. The gulf between sociology and cognitive science is an unfortunate historical accident.
