La décade de Cerisy Gilbert Simondon ou l'invention du futur a rassemblé des philosophes tels que Jean-Hugues Barthélémy, Andrew Feenberg ou Bernard Stiegler, des chercheurs venus d'autres disciplines, tels qu'Armand Hatchuel, Gilles Cohen-Tannoudji ou Thierry Gaudin, et toute une génération de jeunes chercheurs. Il en résulte un livre foisonnant où l'astrophysique côtoie la psychothérapie, où l'architecture dialogue avec l'informatique, et où tous ces savoirs tendent vers une communication encyclopédique. Il débute avec les "transductions politiques de Simondon" pour penser (...) la relation entre les évolutions technologiques et les normativités sociales. Puis, il aborde "la techno-esthétique" et le design, frayant la voie à une esthétique interne à la réalité technique qui ne repose plus sur la contemplation mais sur la participation à la technicité. Avec la "culture technologique", il est question des techniques à l'échelle du nanomètre et des instruments astronomiques spatiaux, qui imposent à la Culture d'intégrer les schèmes de la communication entre échelles. Le quatrième volet, consacré au "préindividuel quantique", propose une ré-interprétation de la mécanique quantique fondée sur les notions de préindividualité, de potentialité et de phases. "L'information et les réseaux", leurs enjeux, sont ensuite étudiés en relation avec l'informatique et les TIC. Ces technologies conditionnant aussi l'individuation psychique et collective, l'enquête se prolonge en direction du "sens du transindividuel". Le regain progressif d'intérêt dont a bénéficié depuis 1990 la pensée de Gilbert Simondon s'est encore renforcé, depuis 2006, par la publication de textes inédits du philosophe français, ainsi que par celle, enfin unifiée, du grand œuvre de Simondon, jusque-là publié en deux parties : sa thèse principale pour le doctorat d'État, intitulée L'individuation à la lumière des notions de forme et d'information. La présente étude se propose de revenir sur ce texte fondateur, origine de L'individu et sa genèse physico-biologique (...) comme ensuite de L'individuation psychique et collective, pour en dégager à la fois l'originalité et l'actualité, mais aussi pour mieux comprendre finalement le classique de l'auteur, sa thèse complémentaire : Du mode d'existence des objets techniques. On découvrira la portée du " nouvel encyclopédisme " dont Simondon se voulait l'initiateur. Il apparaîtra alors que dans le sillage de son directeur de thèse, Georges Canguilhem, avec d'autres modalités et insistances que lui, Simondon ne rejette le " facile humanisme " que par exigence d'un humanisme difficile qui sache d'une part faire dériver l'homme du vivant, d'autre part intégrer la technique à la culture. Loin d'être une « égologie cartésienne » ou un « apriorisme kantien », la phénoménologie husserlienne se veut, d'un bout à l'autre de l'œuvre, une subversion des alternatives classiques dont relèvent selon elle Descartes et Kant et par lesquelles se définit la métaphysique au sens large. S'il est vrai que Husserl revendique un « idéalisme transcendantal », c'est en approfondissant la réfutation kantienne de l'idéalisme, et cela en un geste qui, par le biais de l'intentionnalité comme autotranscendance subvertissant l'opposition principielle (...) du sujet et de l'objet, préfigure déjà l'annulation heideggérienne du « scandale » qui préoccupait encore Kant, mais selon une voie qui n'oublie pas pour autant de rendre compte de la possibilité de la connaissance. Far from being a « Cartesian egology » or a « Kantian apriorism », phenomenology is meant, from one end to another of the Husserlian work, to overthrow the traditional alternatives, i.e. metaphysics in a wider sense, including Descartes and Kant. Though Husserl asserts to be a « transcendantal idealist », one may get over the fundamental opposition between subject and object only by looking further into the Kantian refutation of idealism by the means of a reinterpretation of intentionnality as selftranscendence. Such an approach forecasts the Heideggerian cancelling of the scandal that used to bother Kant, but according to a new way not eschewing to give an account of the possibility of knowledge. (shrink)

Those who know the work of Karl Popper will have recognized in my title the transformation into interrogation of a formula repeated several times by this eminent philosopher of science, whom some consider as the greatest of the 20th century in his specific field - even if they do not share his theses. This Popperian formula, to which I wish to devote my analyzes here, has at least the merit of being clear and impactful. But as often, what is clear (...) and impactful can become too simple for what is to be thought, and perhaps even too simple to express faithfully the philosophy which one seeks to summarize there. Writing this, I am not claiming that Popper was not really a falsificationist. Far be it from me to dispute that the great thesis of his epistemology consists in making any scientific theory worthy of the name falsifiable or refutable. This is indisputable: for Popper, the dividing line between scientific theory and non-scientific theory lies precisely in this falsifiable character. (shrink)

Si l'Encyclopédisme génétique de Simondon offre de quoi surmonter la crise du sens qui caractérise l'époque des technosciences, c'est d'abord parce qu'il présente une pensée de l'homme, de la technique et de la connaissance capable d'assumer deux paradoxes sans jamais tomber dans la contradiction. D'une part, il construit une pensée non anthropologique de la technique qui pourtant ne se présente pas comme « destinale » , dépassant par là le débat entre la sociologie des sciences et la pensée heideggérienne. D'autre (...) part, il rend possible une théorie de la connaissance qui distingue radicalement Relativité philosophique et relativisme. If Simondon's genetic Encyclopaedism offers enough to overcome the crisis of meaning which characterizes the techno-sciences times, it is indeed first because he presents man's thought processes, an approach of technique and knowledge able to come to terms with two kinds of paradoxes without ever running the risk of falling into contradiction. On the one hand, it builds a non-anthropological thought about technique which, however, doesn't seem to appear as being « destinal » , thus going beyond the traditional debate between the sociology of sciences and Heideggerian thought. On the other hand, it enables a theory of knowledge radically distinguishing between philosophical reality and relativism. (shrink)

L'épuisement de la querelle du réalisme en physique, qui est la conséquence épistémologique de la divergence inexplicable entre mécanique quantique et physique relativiste, manifeste la nécessité d'un dépassement de l'opposition traditionnelle entre réalisme et antiréalisme. La Théorie de la Relativité d'Échelle de Laurent Nottale, dans la mesure où elle vise à réunifier microphysique et macrophysique grâce aux concepts d'espace-temps fractal et de dépendance d'échelle, opère le dépassement de cette opposition en postulant la valeur d'être des relations physiques. L'exigence d'un réalisme (...) des relations en physique confirme ainsi les intuitions de la philosophie de l'individuation de Gilbert Simondon, qui jugeait nécessaire d'accorder à la relation une valeur ontologique pour fonder la «synthèse grandiose de la relativité et des quanta ». Avec le début de l'ère industrielle, notre écosystème n'a cessé d'être dégradé par l'activité humaine. Et puisque la vie humaine est liée à la terre, et donc à sa qualité minimale, comment habiter ce monde devenu désormais fragile? En travaillant sur le système philosophique d'Hans Jonas, au regard de Gunther Anders et Heidegger, l'auteur pose la question de la cohabitation de l'homme avec la technique. Philosophical translation between "linguistic violence" and translative hermeneutics. Translational considerations from the perspective of the translation of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant The establishment of translatology as a scientific discipline is a late phenomenon to which not only linguistics but also the philosophy of language has contributed significantly. Although the considerations of Schleiermacher, Ricoeur, Derrida, Balibar, Cassin and other philosophers are very stimulating for the examination of the translation problematics, they do not offer a particular translation theory of (...) philosophical texts. Most of their works are of little help in practice when it comes to translating a complicated philosophical text. That is why I will take in this paper the opposite path and start from my own experience as a translator of philosophical literature into Bulgarian and, more concretely, from my translation of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant. On the base of this key work of contemporary philosophy and its translations into different languages, I will address the difficulties and the specifics of philosophical translation, discuss various translation methods, and argue several theses, which could serve as impulses for a further development of translation theory and translation practice in the field of philosophy. We typically associate sovereignty with the modern state and presuppose the coincidence of political rule, public power, government, legitimacy and jurisdiction with territorially delimited states. We are also used to referencing liberal principles of justice, egalitarian ideals of fairness, republican conceptions of non-domination and separation of powers, and democratic ideas of popular sovereignty, for the standards that should constitute, guide, limit and legitimate the exercise of sovereign power. This Article addresses an important challenge to these principles: the reemergence of theories (...) and claims to jurisdictional/political pluralism on behalf of non-state “nomos groups” within well-established liberal-democratic polities. Theories of jurisdictional political pluralism purport to account for the independent sovereign authority of the corporate religious, while providing a “postmodern,” “permeable,” “pluralist” conception of sovereignty allegedly more appropriate descriptively to twenty-first century reality and more attractive normatively, than the modern statist version. This Article analyzes and assesses these claims. It criticizes the disassociation of the sovereignty concept from publicly accountable power, challenges the displacement of rights-holders from individuals to corporate groups, and offers a different, federal alternative to anachronistic or normatively flawed modern monistic statist conceptions. My purpose is to preserve the key achievements of democratic constitutionalism and to apply them to every level on which government, power, rule, and/or domination is exercised. (shrink)

This article focuses on the relationship between social movements and political parties in the context of populist challenges to constitutional democracy. There are many reasons for the current plight of democracy but I focus here on one aspect: the decline of mainstream political parties, the emergence of new forms of populist movement parties and the general crisis of political representation in long consolidated Western democracies. This article analyses the specific political logic and dynamics of social movements – the logic of (...) influence, and distinguishes it from that of political parties – the logic of power. It addresses transformations in movements, parties and their relationships. It looks at the shifts in movement and party types that constitute the political opportunity structure for the emergence of new populist movement party forms and relationships, focusing on the hollowing out and movement-ization of political parties. Contemporary populist movement parties are not the cause of the hollowing out or movement-ization of political parties. Rather they are a response to the crisis of political representation exemplified by hollow parties and cartel parties. But it is my thesis that thanks to its specific logic, populism fosters the worst version of movement party relationships, undermining the democratic functions of both. (shrink)

I begin with a discussion of code and its primary types: embedded, source, binary and interpreted. I then consider three measures in which code is fundamentally different than print. In particular I speak of the trust inherent in connectivity, the organizational difficulties of information, and the problem of archiving information that may change rapidly. Following each of these explanations I offer my own hypotheses about how code and ubiquitous digital media might alter society and the sensibilities of its participants.

This article reconsiders some of the arguments that I made in my two phenomenology-inspired books on what I have called the “filmic identification” in the cinema: Les structures de l’expérience filmique and Essai sur l’image et la communication. While the former has received some attention in film studies via Vivian Sobchack’s mediating work in her influential essay “Toward a Phenomenology of Nonfictional Film Experience”, the latter is little known in film studies and phenomenological circles. The two guest editors have therefore (...) asked me to introduce and update my former position and place it in the intellectual climate of French-speaking film studies from the 1950s to the 1980s—that is, from the filmology movement to the dominance of semiology and psychoanalysis. La philosophie consiste à donner un autre nom à ce qui a été longtemps cristallisé sous le nom de Dieu » : quel sort réserver à cet énoncé de Merleau-Ponty? Ces Leçons, qui se focalisent sur quelques désignations emblématiques de l’absolu dans la philosophie moderne, débutent avec le « non-autre » forgé par Nicolas de Cues dans le dernier de ses dialogues philosophiques. En interrogeant successivement la façon dont Descartes, Spinoza, Kant et Schelling ont redéfini l’absolu et les conséquences qu’ils (...) en ont tirées pour la formulation de la question de Dieu, il s’agit de problématiser la notion du « tout autre », décliné de différentes manières dans les Miettes philosophiques de Kierkegaard, la théologie dialectique de Karl Barth, la phénoménologie du sacré de Rudolf Otto et, plus près de nous, chez Heidegger et Derrida. En analysant quelques nœuds remarquables de l’arc historique qui relie ces deux désignations, il s’agit de mieux comprendre le projet de la théologie philosophique moderne et de donner une profondeur de champ historique aux débats contemporains relatifs à l’« onto-théologie », l’« idolâtrie conceptuelle » et les « théologies négatives ». I propose to sketch and compare the "picture theories" of Hermann von Helmholtz and Heinrich Hertz. These semiotic conceptions of scientific knowledge are forerunners of the now prevailing semantic views of scientific theories in philosophy of science, and my intent is to bring out the respective main features that either proved to be influential or, as such, retained in contemporary formal approaches to the semantics of physical theories. For our purposes, "picture theories" can be characterized as conceptions that take as (...) a departure the fact that scientific theories are embodied in a system of signs and involve a systematic treatment of the relation that obtains between the semiotic system and the world. Essentially, such a theory will have in its core an answer to the question: "What does it take for a picture to be a picture of something?" In concludion, I outline a filiation between Helmholtz, Hertz and Carnap pertaining to the question of monomorphism or categoricity in the general semantics of physical theories. (shrink)

The aim of this paper is to analyse the disgust of which Sartre's “nausea” is an expression, by identifying its ontological significance and its role within Sartre's thought. Particular attention is devoted to the phenomenological themes of vision and conversion of the gaze, in the strict correlation they have with disgust. My claim is that Sartre, in his early philosophical work, elaborated a response to the Heideggerian problematic of the correlation between Befindlichkeit and Faktizität. To verify such claim, my paper (...) will analyse the differences between Sartrean and Heideggerian thought with regard to these concepts, and show the extent of the influence that Husserl, Emmanuel Levinas and Aurel Kolnai had on Sartre. When the original Dutch version of this book was presented in 1971 to the University of Leiden as a thesis for the Doctorate in philosophy, I was prevented by the academic mores of that university from expressing my sincere thanks to three members of the Philosophical Faculty for their support of and interest in my pursuits. I take the liberty of doing so now, two and a half years later. First and foremost I want to thank Professor G. Nuchelmans warmly (...) for his expert guidance of my research. A number of my most im portant sources were brought to my attention by him. During the whole process of composing this book his criticism and encouragement were carried out in a truly academic spirit. The paper attempts to construct a global model of a social contract using well-known metaphors of two great philosophers: Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Locke. By modelling a global social contract, I mean the formulation of a social contract using two sets of data: one is global citizens' preferences about values and norms while the other is sovereign states' participation in multilateral treaties. Both Rousseau and Locke formulate their versions of social contract theories in the national context of eighteenth-century Europe. (...) This paper tries my hands on extending their theories to the global context. This paper attempts to link empirically the relationship between global citizens' preferences as gauged by the World Values Survey and sovereign states' participation in 120 multilateral treaties deposited to the United Nations. To see the link between citizens and treaties (quasi-legislative outcomes, sort of), dimensional similarities of the cosmos of citizens' preference and the cosmos of sovereign states' willingness to join multilateral treaties are examined. Once done, all the sovereign states are located in each of the two cosmoses, citizens and states, and the correlation coefficients between them are measured. Based on these empirical results, the nature of the global quasi-legislative process is clarified. Conclusions and implications are drawn. (shrink)

I do this by showing their roles in his proof of the external world, his position on other minds, and his position on the “beast-machine.” Descartes uses God’s veracity in the first proof, but not in the second or third. I suggest that the reason for this is that extending his appeal to God to other minds would have placed (...) his beast-machine doctrine in jeopardy. I conclude by accounting for some Cartesian passages that might seem incompatible with my reading of moral certainty’s important role in his philosophy.RÉSUMÉ: Cet article explore les liens entre le recours à la véracité de Dieu et les notions de certitude «métaphysique» et «morale» chez Descartes. Pour cela, je montre le rôle qu’elles jouent dans sa preuve de l’existence du monde extérieur, sa position sur l’existence d’autres esprits et celle sur l’«animal-machine». Si la « rencontre des religions » est de plus en plus un fait, le « dialogue interreligieux » revêt un « caractère inéluctable » qui oblige à voir à frais nouveaux la place de la « théologie chrétienne ». Très tôt, Paul Tillich a voulu élargir la question de la rencontre des religions à celle du rapport entre religions et sécularisation de façon à éviter l’enfermement dans une théologie étroite des religions. L’objet de cet article est de montrer comment (...) la pensée théologique de Tillich sur l’histoire des religions s’enracine dans sa lecture de la dernière philosophie de Schelling, ce qui lui a permis de percevoir non seulement la possibilité et la fécondité d’un croisement entre religion et culture, mais aussi l’enjeu des questions christologiques liées à ce croisement. Car même si les événements politiques et la faillite de l’idéalisme allemand l’ont ensuite conduit vers d’autres débats, en particulier avec E. Troeltsch et K. Barth, Tillich est resté jusqu’au bout fidèle aux intuitions théologiques découvertes dans la philosophie schellingienne.While the “encounter of religions” is becoming an increasingly commonplace occurrence, the “ineluctable character” of “interreligious dialogue” forces us to examine, at new cost, the place of “Christian theology.” Paul Tillich sought very early on to broaden the question of the encounter of religions to that of a relationship between religions and secularization, to avoid limiting it to a narrow theology of religions. The aim of this article is to show how Tillich’s theological thinking on the history of religions is rooted in his reading of the late philosophy of Schilling. This allowed him to perceive not only the possibility and the fecundity of bringing together religion and culture, but also the Christological questions at stake in this encounter. Although political events and the failure of German idealism led to other debates, in particular with E. Troeltsch and K. Barth, Tillich remained to the end faithful to the theological intuitions discovered in Schelling’s philosophy. (shrink)

RÉSUMÉ Dans cet article, je propose une interprétation de la philosophie de Wilhelm Dilthey qui repose sur trois idées directrices. La première idée identifie l'objet de sa philosophie : la vie. La deuxième idée établit sa méthode, soit l'autoréflexion. La troisième idée clarifie ce qui est révélé par l'autoréflexion, à savoir l'universalité et la variabilité de la vie. Dans un premier temps, je défends que la lecture épistémologique de la philosophie de Dilthey doit être abandonnée. ABSTRACT In this paper, I suggest an interpretation of Wilhelm Dilthey's philosophy that rests on three guiding ideas. The first idea identifies the object of his philosophy: life. The second one establishes its method, namely self-reflection. The third one clarifies what is revealed by self-reflection, that is the universality and the variability of life.
