The authorship criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) are widely accepted in biomedical journals, but many studies in large and prestigious journals show that a considerable proportion of authors do not fulfill these criteria. We investigated authorship contributions in a small medical journal outside the scientific mainstream, to see if poor adherence to authorship criteria is common in biomedical journals. We analyzed statements on research contribution, as checked by the corresponding author, for individual authors of 114 (...) research articles, representing 475 authors, submitted to the Croatian Medical Journal (CMJ) from 1999 to 2000. Only 40% of authors fulfilled the ICMJE authorship criteria. The authors listed first on the by-line were more likely to fulfill the authorship criteria than all other authors on the by-line. The percentage of authors fulfilling the ICMJE criteria of authorship decreased with the increase in the number of authors listed on the by-line. These results indicate that poor adherence to ICMJE authorship criteria is poor across biomedical journals, regardless of the size of the scientific community. Authorship and contributorship in biomedical journals, as well as editorial ethical responsibilities towards authorship criteria need critical redefinition and education of both editors and authors. The intention of this article is to shed light on the contemporary polarization of Croatian society to the Left and Right of politics and the way in which the ideas of gender, gender ‘ideology’ and cultural war are used in this polarization, as well as the possible influence of these polarizations on the further development of equitable gender relations in Croatia. The reason why the debate about gender ‘ideology’ is a powerful polarizing factor in Croatia will be expounded against the (...) background of the historical antagonism between communism and the Catholic Church and the role attributed in this antagonism to the feminist movement, as well as on the basis of the presentations of gender ‘ideology’ interpretations in the documents of the Catholic Church. The basic postulation in the article is that contemporary socio-political discourses will not stop the developmental process of egalitarian gender models in Croatia. Sociological research shows that Croatian society is not actually polarized but represents a complex structure in which elements of pre-modern, modern and post-modern interweave, and that alongside tendencies to reinstitute traditional values the trend toward the modernization of value-orientated stands is also apparent. As far as the latter is concerned, gender equality is precisely the thin thread of modernization that can be pinpointed in the process. (shrink)

Una de las dificultades a la que se enfrentan los estudiantes de educación superior es la producción de un Trabajo Final de Grado (TFG). Si bien este macrogénero se ha estudiado ampliamente en distintas disciplinas, actualmente, no existen revisiones que sistematicen el gran cúmulo de información que se ha generado en torno al TFG. A partir de una revisión sistemática, nuestro objetivo es identificar las características centrales de los estudios que se han llevado a cabo en torno al TFG desarrollado (...) en distintas disciplinas de la educación superior. La muestra de análisis quedó constituida por 53 Artículos de Investigación. La revisión de estos estudios nos ha permitido sistematizar los avances investigativos en torno al TFG (lengua de las investigaciones, grado académico, disciplina, etc.) e identificar los vacíos que aún persisten en torno a este. The rise of the digital economy, in terms of digital innovation (DI), requires the reconsideration of the notion of innovation to clarify its conceptualisation in a post–industrial digital economy. The current science, technology, innovation (STI), and social studies of innovation are lacking conceptual, theoretical, and analytical grounds for the exploration of DI, despite their pervasive impact on our lives. The aim of this study is to provide a conceptual framework for the exploration of DI, driven by growing recognition of the (...) fact that the concept of innovation is faced with contemporary crises due to the theoretical and analytical limits of industrial innovation when adapting to socio-economic changes. This article discusses the ways in which intrinsic features of DI differentiate from industrial innovation, constructing the concept of DI around its two distinctive features: raising social inequality through four selected mechanisms and disrupting business models with ambivalent consequences. These characteristics have been identified to be the most intriguing when attempting to understand the nature of DI in today’s digital society. This research applies an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach, allowing for a critical and qualitative analysis of the current concepts of DI in different scientific fields and their convergence into a common theoretical ground for the social science of DI. SummaryA detailed database on the genealogy of the Makarska region in Croatia has been created. The twinning rate for three villages in the region were analysed over the period 1870 to 1940 and factors such as mother's age and birth order are discussed. Of the three villages, Podgora was identified as having the highest twinning rate and consequently records for Podgora were examined further to include almost 400 years of historical data.

The case describes the developments of an ethics code observed in the local government of Suffolk County, New York, USA. In Suffolk County, there is now a dedicated Board of Ethics Agency (“Board”) within the local government to ensure that business operations and government operations run as ethically compliant as possible. This Board was created in 2012 in order to follow compliance with a law that established a replacement for the Ethics Commission (previously existing within Suffolk County) because this Ethics (...) Commission had been involved in a serious controversy. The former County Executive, Steve Levy, was found guilty of compromising the “integrity of an ethics commission”. Suffolk County government prescribed various measures in order to ensure that the citizens of Suffolk County were protected from business ethical violations. The Board also preemptively created laws that discouraged businesses from acting unethically. (shrink)

Due to a pandemic caused by a coronavirus, teaching in Croatian schools in the second half of the school year 2019/2020 and at Croatian universities in the summer semester of the same academic year took place online. It has introduced various synonymous, paronymous or insufficiently precise terms into the public and professional discourse, which motivates us to re-examine their meaning and the scope of the concept to which they refer. This paper focuses on defining seven selected terms, aiming to contribute (...) to a more precise usage of e-teaching terminology. Furthermore, after searching web pages in the Croatian language by keywords, we single out examples of their use. These are the following terms: e-learning, e- teaching, e-classes, web-based teaching, online teaching, virtual teaching and distance education. (shrink)

This book considers ethical issues arising in professional and business settings and the role of individuals making decisions and coping with moral dilemmas. It starts by elaborating on critical thinking and on normative ethical theories, subsequently presenting the structure and cinematic elements of narrative film. These two avenues are tools for evaluating films and for discussions on various ethical problems in contemporary business, including: the corporate and banking financial machinations (greed, fraud, social responsibility); workplace ethical challenges (harassment, violence, inequity, inequality); (...) professional and business ethical challenges (corruption, whistleblowing, outsourcing and downsizing); and personal responsibility and identity challenges due to career pressures, loss of privacy and cyber harassment, and job structure changes in light of changing technology. Readers can benefit from engagement in filmic narratives, as a simulated environment for developing a stance towards ethical challenges. (shrink)

Secular–religious dichotomy has been criticised in discourse on secularisation theory as well as in discussions of the relationship between secular and religious feminism. Feminist theorists have criticised the secular–religious divide of feminism for overlooking facts such as the inherent gendering of this dichotomy, the participation of women believers in the gender equality movement since its inception, and the contributions of feminist theologians and gender studies scholars who use their respective religious traditions as a basis for gender egalitarianism. This article will (...) criticise secular–religious dichotomy for overlooking the fact that secular, rather than religious, principles underlie gender stereotypes. Namely, Christian and Islamic theological anthropology has accepted philosophical postulates regarding the nature of women and used them to build models of subordination and complementarity of gender relations, thereby neglecting the egalitarian anthropology that can be developed based on the holy scriptures of both traditions. One of the challenges in exploring the secular-religious dichotomy can be found in the anti-gender movement in which believers join secular organizations and use secular discourse to advocate and preserve gender stereotypes. U članku se nastoji pokazati na koji način francuski filozof Paul Ricœur »prisvaja« neke od Augustinovih koncepcija – prvi grijeh, vrijeme, »nutarnji učitelj« i pamćenje – i uključuje ih u svoje promišljanje o razumijevanju i samorazumijevanju ljudskog »bitka u svijetu« posredstvom interpretacije teksta. Ricœurovo »prisvajanje« tekstova koji hrane i obogaćuju njegovo vlastito promišljanje, kompleksno je i slojevito. Pojedini stručnjaci, međutim, upućuju ovakvom »prisvajanju« kritike. Tako Isabelle Bochet u knjizi Augustin dans la pensée de Paul Ricœur , u preciznoj analizi Augustinova (...) utjecaja na Ricœura, zamjera Ricœuru proizvoljan pristup kakav privilegira jedne, a zanemaruje druge aspekte Augustinove misli. Ona mu, zapravo, prigovara da ne prisvaja teološke argumente Augustinove rasprave, nju samu time lišavajući bitne dimenzije. Da bi se odgovorilo na pitanje: na čemu se ovakva kritika, zapravo, temelji, valjalo bi se ponovno pitati što uopće jest hermeneutičko »prisvajanje« te kakva je priroda veze između teologije i filozofije.Dans cet article on essaye de montrer comment le philosophe français Paul Ricœur « approprie » certaines conceptions d’Augustin – péché originel, temps, « maître interieur », mémoire – et les inclue dans sa propre pensée sur la comphrension et autocomprehension « d’être dans le monde » par intermédiare de l’interprétation. « L’appropriation » des textes qui nourissent et enrichissent la pensée de Ricœur est complexe et elle a plusieurs couches. Certains experts, cependant, adressent à tel « appropriation » ses critiques. Isabelle Bochet , dans son analyse précis de l’influence d’Augustin sur Ricœur, reproche à Ricœur son appropriation provisoire qui privilège les uns et néglige les autres aspects de la pensée d’Augustin. Elle lui rapproche, en effet, qu’il n’aproprie pas les arguments théologiques de la discussion d’Augustin en la dépouillant de sa dimension essentielle. Pour qu’on puisse répondre sur la question: sur quoi se fonde telle critique, il faut se demander de nouveau qu’est que c’est que « l’appropriation » hérméneutique et quelle est la nature da la relation entre la théologie et la philosophie. Njegove knjige Temps et récit i Soi-même comme un autre prožete su s barem tri filozofijske intencije: sebstvo ukoliko se suprotstavlja »ja« i odgovara na pitanje identiteta; identitet definiran kao idem-identitet i ipse-identitet, čija dijalektika upućuje na dva načina na koji se osobni identitet odnosi prema vremenu i tvori pojam sebstva; te drugi koji mnoštvom svojih figura obnavlja tradicionalnu dijalektiku Istoga i Drugoga. Autorica nastoji pokazati Ricoeurovo promišljanje u dijalogu s autorima kao što (...) su H. Arendt, E. Lévinas, J. Nabert, J. Greisch i dr.Paul Ricoeur met en question les philosophies du sujet. Ses livres Temps et récit et Soi-même comme un autre sont traversées par au moins trois intentions philosophiques: le soi, en tant qu’il s’oppose au « je » et qu’il répond à la question de son identité, l’identité narrative qui se définit par l’identité-idem et l’identité-ipse renvoyant aux deux manières dont l’identité personnelle se rapporte au temps et fonde la notion de soi; l’autre qui par ses multiples figures renouvelle la traditionnelle dialectique du Même et de l’Autre. We address the question: what can experience of narrative film bring to a business student? The medium of narrative film allows discussions of ethical issues, as well as discussions of film as a product in terms of its artistic creativity versus its business goal and its marketing of an underlying ideological position. Hence, we look at films from philosophical (ethical), aesthetic (artistic), and business perspectives. We describe the effort and the outcome of delivering a new course in the business undergraduate (...) program at the College of Business at Stony Brook University in New York, USA. The course was entitled Ethics: Critical Thinking through Film and it was designed to address various business and societal problems through narrative films. A diverse set of films allowed us to discuss questions about problems facing contemporary society, as well as ethical issues arising in business, including workforce ethics, greediness, bribery, whistle-blowing, and fraud. The scope of this book is the characterization of the template for the properly aesthetic experience, composed of the prerequisite and the three subsequent phases: excess, pause, and recuperation.

The book analyzes the intertwining of aesthetics and ethics in experiences characterized by a break of representational capabilities, such as encounters with nature and art. It also notes that the prerequisite for such an experience concerns expectations and authenticity, and the aftermath engenders wonderment and sublimity, as a common root to aesthetic and ethics. Various philosophical positions and interpretation and contextualization of material is achieved via sections with art examples.

For successful application of educational inclusive concept, next to the material and technical requirements, of high importance is also the quality and improvement of educational practice, education and competence of all participants in the educational process. Teachers are crucial part of the educational process so their acquired knowledge and skills are of great importance for the success of the inclusive education. Aim of this paper was to determine geography teacher’s attitudes towards working with pupils with developmental difficulties. For the purpose (...) of the research survey was conducted including geography teachers in elementary and secondary schools in Croatia. Research results indicate that teachers do not consider themselves educated enough neither competent for everyday work with pupils with developmental difficulties and they express the need for additional education. In their school work they try to adopt teaching materials and methods according to children’s difficulties. Cooperation with school professional and pedagogical service and parents is one of the main preconditions for successful teaching. There are significant differences in teacher’s attitudes in elementary in relation to ones in secondary schools. (shrink)

The Guggenheim’s spring retrospective of the seminal Swedish painter, Hilma Af Klint, has, naturally, evoked a multitude of art critics and visual culture scholars who laud her radical abstraction which, at the beginning of the 20th century, preceded Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian. Yet, where much attention has been given to the symbology and motifs riddling Klint’s work – bold, private, untethered and nonrepresentational as they are – there has been a modicum of nuanced thought on how, exactly, esotericism and theology fomented (...) Klint’s pedagogical projects. Jillian Steinhauer, for instance, has underscored Klint’s naturalistic watercolors; featuring flowers and lifelike drawings of women; Summer Landscape (1888) suggests Klint’s technical aptitude for rendering light. Jadranka Ryle, in a clever article titled “Reinventing the Yggdrasil,” invokes Klint’s motif of the Yggdrasil, or the holy tree of Norse mythology, as a political axle for Nordic romanticism. Ryle makes the claim that by redirecting the Yggdrasil towards androgynous abstraction, Klint’s engagement with Norse mythology subverts the nationalist and patriarchal romanticism that previously characterized the nineteenth century’s use of the Yggdrasil. Others have adroitly uncovered biographical fragments from Klint’s life, detailing how she and four friends formed De Fem (“the Five”), an exclusively female coven that met weekly, praying, meditating, and holding seances to commune with spiritual guides. Rather than poise the Swedish maverick within the cannon of abstraction qua a political praxis, feminist subject-being, or historiography – projects that have been exhaustively overwrought, to the point of rendering Klint’s work both mute and reductively technical– I would like to take this time to closely examine simply one of Klint’s paintings and foreground it as an axiomatic modernist injunction between metaphysics and epistemology.
