A general model of problem‐solving processes based on misconception elimination is presented to simulate both impasses and solving processes. The model operates on goal‐related rules and a set of constraint rules in the form of “if (state or goal), do not (Action)” for the explicit constraints in the instructions and the implicit constraints that come from misconceptions of legal moves. When impasses occur, a constraint elimination mechanism is applied. Because successive eliminations of implicit constraints enlarge the problem space and have (...) an effect on planning, the model integrates “plan‐based” and “constraint‐based” approaches to problem‐solving behavior.Simulating individual protocols of Tower of Hanoi situations shows that the model, which has a proper set of constraints, predicts a single move with no alternative on about 61% of the movements and that protocols are quite successfully simulated movement by movement. Finally, it is shown that many features of previous models are embedded in the constraint elimination model. (shrink)

We re-evaluate existing data that demonstrate a large amount of variability in the content of categories considering the fact that these data have been obtained in a specific task: the production of features of single isolated categories. We present new data that reveal a large consensus when participants have to judge whether or not a given feature is characteristic of a category and we show that classification tasks produce an intermediate level of consensus. We argue that the differences observed between (...) tasks are due to the extent of implied context and we propose a reinterpretation of typicality effects, demonstrating that they are compatible with the existence of a stable conceptual core. In order to explain how the existence of a conceptual core is consistent with variability due to context, we present a theory of categorisation based on a property tree organisation. Within a domain of description, we distinguish between semantic implications (flying → moving) and empirical implications (flying → having wings) as well as between properties used to describe objects. Semantic implications serve to build property lines and Galois lattices are used to reveal category structures according to empirical implications. We show that variability in the category content may be explained by the fact that some properties are emphasised while others are masked according to the context. (shrink)

The Epicurean Colotes, in a work entitled Περὶ τοῦ ὅτι κατὰ τὰ τῶν ἄλλων φιλοσόφων οὐδὲ ζῆν ἔστιν, cited two fragments of Empedocles in order to prove that the poet denied that existence exists. Both are prominent in controversies about Empedocles’ physics and his usage of the term φύσις, but fr. 9 is very corrupt. To have any hope of restoring it, we will need to examine carefully Plutarch's explication de texte in his Adversus Colotem. Although there have been two (...) detailed treatments of this passage, neither has resolved the difficulties. (shrink)

Cet article porte sur le cours de philosophie de la religion donné par Tillich à Berlin en 1920. Il retrace le parcours qui conduit Tillich à l’affirmation que Dieu vient à l’existence dans tout acte religieux. Le point de départ est la critique des preuves de Dieu; elle se poursuit dans une critique de l’objectivation religieuse qui fait de Dieu un être existant au-dessus des autres. Contre cette conception de l’existence de Dieu, Tillich soutient la thèse d’une réalisation du divin, (...) d’une venue de Dieu à l’existence, dans l’acte religieux lui-même. C’est dans l’autotranscendance de l’acte religieux que le mystère de l’être fait irruption à travers les formes de la conscience. (shrink)

Ricoeur peut parler alors du « témoignage absolu de l’absolu ». |: This article is a reflection on a paper by Paul Ricoeur on the Christian testimony. A testimony is more than a bare confession of faith. It includes a narrative, as we see in the gospels. But it is also more than a bare report. It comprises an existential layer of personal experience. It voices the whole commitment of the witness to the cause to which he bears witness. Thus, the testimony becomes a personal profession of faith, whereby the witness identifies himself with the cause and with the person he bears witness to. This is a study of Paul Tillich’s non-supranaturalist interpretation of the history of salvation. The question lies at the core of his 1923 debates with Karl Barth. Two articles written by Tillich in 1927 and 1928 on belief-ful realism advocate a faith which sees the divine at the heart of the real, not turning away from reality. The 1927 article, “Eschatology and History,” elaborates a philosophy of history which shows the signs of transcendence in the depths of history, at the (...) point where meaning is threatened by meaninglessness. The 1930 article, “Christology and the Interpretation of History,” proposes Christ as the center of history ; this proposal secures the meaning of history not as an intervention from outside, but as an irruption in history of its unconditioned ground. Erdelyi's version of repression is no longer recognizably Freudian. Erdelyi fails to cite directed forgetting experiments involving psychiatric patients that indicate that the motivation to forget threatening material seldom translates into an ability to do so. The early Freud of the seduction theory of hysteria did inspire the recovered memory fiasco.

La Dogmatique de Gérard Siegwalt s’inspire profondément de la théologie de Paul Tillich, tout en demeurant pleinement originale. On le voit tout particulièrement à propos de la méthode de corrélation. Chez Siegwalt, la corrélation s’instaure entre deux types d’approche: l’approche sapientiale et l’approche prophétique . Dans cet article, j’entends montrer chez Siegwalt l’équivalence entre ces deux termes de la corrélation: la dimension transcendante du réel et le Dieu de la foi chrétienne.
