    Religiousness and Business Ethics.Ellen J. Kennedy & Leigh Lawton - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (2):163-175.
There is strong theoretical support for a relationship between various characteristics of religiousness and attitudes towards business ethics. This paper examines three frequently- studied dimensions of religiousness (fundamentalism, conservatism, and intrinsic religiousness) and their ability to predict students' willingness to behave unethically. Because prior research indicated a possible relationship between the religious affiliation of an institution and its members' ethical orientation, we studied students at universities with three different types of religious affiliation: evangelical, Catholic, and none. Results of the study lend (...)

The Effects of Social and Moral Integration on Ethical Standards: A Comparison of American and Ukrainian Business Students. [REVIEW]Ellen J. Kennedy & Leigh Lawton - 1996 - Journal of Business Ethics 15 (8):901 - 911.
This paper examines levels of similarity in ethical outlooks in countries where economic and sociocultural values may differ markedly. We compared students from a capitalist country, the United States, with students from Ukraine, a country experiencing dramatic ideological confusion and economic change. We tested the hypothesis that greater social and moral integration, as operationalized by a lack of alienation and by religiousness, will directly affect one's willingness to engage in unethical business practices. The sample was composed of business students in both (...)

    Business Ethics in Fiction.Ellen J. Kennedy & Leigh Lawton - 1992 - Journal of Business Ethics 11 (3):187 - 195.
Interest in teaching business ethics classes on college campuses has increased dramatically during the past decade. In the United States, virtually all graduate and undergraduate business programs teach business ethics in some form. While current pedagogy relies primarily on factual recounting of actual workplace incidents and actual and hypothetical case studies, calls for multidisciplinary approaches to teaching business ethics have not yet produced significant pedagogical change. We propose the use of fiction (novels, dramas, and short stories) to enrich current teaching (...)

    Ethics and Services Marketing.Ellen J. Kennedy & Leigh Lawton - 1993 - Journal of Business Ethics 12 (10):785 - 795.
The area of services marketing is a highly crucial one for potential ethical violations. The services industry, which drives over two-thirds of our national economy, is about to experience severe changes due to increasing competition. The temptation to make ethical compromises will pose a dramatic threat to the business climate. We review conceptual approaches to the field of marketing ethics and conclude that existing models often lack an important component which affects ethical decision-making. That component includes the interorganizational variables: the primary (...)

Written Versus Verbal Consent: A Qualitative Study of Stakeholder Views of Consent Procedures Used at the Time of Recruitment Into a Peripartum Trial Conducted in an Emergency Setting.J. Lawton, N. Hallowell, C. Snowdon, J. E. Norman, K. Carruthers & F. C. Denison - 2017 - BMC Medical Ethics 18 (1):36.
Obtaining prospective written consent from women to participate in trials when they are experiencing an obstetric emergency is challenging. Alternative consent pathways, such as gaining verbal consent at enrolment followed, later, by obtaining written consent, have been advocated by some clinicians and bioethicists but have received little empirical attention. We explored women’s and staff views about the consent procedures used during the internal pilot of a trial, where the protocol permitted staff to gain verbal consent at recruitment. Interviews with staff (...)

    A Messy Business: Qualitative Research and Ethical Review.Angus J. Dawson - 2006 - Clinical Ethics 1 (2):114-116.
This paper argues that qualitative research is both useful and necessary, as it provides an essential means of gaining a richer understanding of patients' perceptions, social processes and meanings. In their paper in this edition of Clinical Ethics, Hallowell and Lawton raise many issues relating to the way that qualitative research is treated by RECs in the UK. In this paper I discuss just three key topics stimulated by their paper: the way that methodology relates to ethics, the experience (...)

  18. Causes as Necessary Conditions: Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias, and J.L. Mackie.Michael J. White - 1984 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy, Supplementary Volume 10:157-189.
There is what might be called a ‘majority position’ in the history of Western philosophy according to which causes are sufficient for or ‘necessitate’ their effects. However, there is also a singificant ‘minority position’ according to which causes are necessary relative to their effects. The second/third century A.D. Peripatetic Alexander of Aphrodisias is an ancient representative of the minority position. He attributes his own view — with some justification, I shall suggest – to Aristotle. This paper has two, somewhat loosely (...)

    J.S. Mill on Plural Voting, Competence and Participation.J. J. Miller - 2003 - History of Political Thought 24 (4):647-667.
J.S. Mill's plural voting proposal in Considerations on Representative Government presents political theorists with a puzzle: the elitist proposal that some individuals deserve a greater voice than others seems at odds with Mill's repeated arguments for the value of full participation in government. This essay looks at Mill's arguments for plural voting, arguing that, far from being motivated solely by elitism, Mill's account is actually driven by a commitment to both competence and participation. It goes on to argue that, for (...)

Linking Ethical Leadership with Firm Performance: A Multi-Dimensional Perspective.Dan Wang, Taiwen Feng & Alan Lawton - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 145 (1):95-109.
Despite the importance of ethical leadership, the impacts of its different facets on firm-level performance are unclear. Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm and the group engagement model, we propose that ethical leadership consisting of leader humane orientation, leader responsibility and sustainability orientation and leader moderation orientation are beneficial to firm performance, and leader justice orientation plays moderating roles. We empirically tested this theoretical framework employing multi-source survey data collected from 264 Chinese firms. The findings reveal that both (...)

Against Lawton’s Contingency Thesis; or, Why the Reported Demise of Community Ecology Is Greatly Exaggerated.Stefan Linquist - 2015 - Philosophy of Science 82 (5):1104-1115.
Lawton’s contingency thesis states that there are no useful generalizations at the level of ecological communities because these systems are especially prone to contingent historical events. I argue that this influential thesis has been grounded on the wrong kind of evidence. CT is best understood in Woodward’s terms as a claim about the instability of certain causal dependencies across different background conditions. A recent distinction between evolution and ecology reveals what an adequate test of Lawton’s thesis would look (...)
