Republicanism in Theory and Practice.Iseult Honohan & Jeremy Jennings (eds.) - 2015 - Routledge.
Recent claims that civic republicanism can better address contemporary political problems than either liberalism or communitarianism are generating an intense debate. This is a sharp insight into this debate, confronting normative theory with historical and comparative analysis. It examines whether republican theory can address contemporary political problems in ways that are both valuable and significantly different in practice from liberalism. These expert authors offer contrasting perspectives on issues raised by the contemporary revival of republicanism and adopt a variety of methodological (...)

The Debate about Luxury in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century French Political Thought.Jeremy Jennings - 2007 - Journal of the History of Ideas 68 (1):79-105.
This article explores the debate about the virtues and otherwise of luxury in French eighteenth- and nineteenth political thought. I begin by contrasting the views of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Jean-Francois Melon. In view of the manner in which this argument was developed by Montesquieu, Diderot, Saint-Lambert, and others, I argue that debates about luxury continued into and beyond the French Revolution of 1789. Then, by looking at the writings of Jean-Baptiste Say and Destutt de Tracy the article demonstrates the coninued (...)

Stefan Collini, Virginia Woolf, and the Question of Intellectuals in Britain.James F. English, Barbara Caine, Michael Bentley, Jeremy Jennings, Daniel T. Rodgers & Stefan Collini - 2007 - Journal of the History of Ideas 68 (3):369-373.
This essay raises the question of gender in relation to the question of intellectuals in Britain, commenting on the gender blindness that made their exclusion so automatic in Collini's study. It looks at some women who might have been included, focussing particularly on Virginia Woolf as one who was not only a very significant public intellectual, but who in her essays entitled 'The Common Reader' also provided a definition and analysis of the role of an intellectual which is very different (...)

An actual court case provides an example for focus, analysis, and discussion. Points of discussion include management''s obligations to employees and factors of injustice related to prejudice against age.

“Better World”: A Case Study of A Korean Megachurch’s NGO.J. Nelson Jennings - 2018 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 35 (4):206-226.
This is a case study about Better World, the NGO of Seoul-based Onnuri Church. The article is more descriptive than prescriptive and proceeds more inductively regarding explanations for BW’s practices than deductively evaluating BW according to predetermined models. This case study seeks to understand, present, and analyze BW in relation to larger development themes associated with Christian development activities. More than providing answers, the article hopes to sharpen questions. After considering the historical development of various programs, the study examines BW’s (...)

This short article is an introduction to a collection of essays written to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Raymond Aron in 1983. Having briefly examined the recent controversy associated with the publication of Daniel Lindenberg's Le Rappel à l'ordre, it discusses the development of political thinking in France over the last 20 years and the place occupied by the revival of interest in liberalism. It concludes by suggesting that the dominance sometimes attributed to liberalism in contemporary France (...)

Nationalist Ideas in the Early Years of the July Monarchy: Armand Carrel and "Le National".J. Jennings - 1991 - History of Political Thought 12 (3):497.
This article is concerned primarily to re-discover the contours of a doctrine -- Winock's nationalisme ouvert -- that (however unsuccessfully and for however short a time) intended to combine liberalism and nationalism. To that end it will concentrate upon the period that surrounded the birth of the July Monarchy in 1830 and specifically upon the writings of Armand Carrel, founder (with Thiers and Mignet) of Le National and supporter of the nationalist causes in Belgium, Poland and Italy. Other writers --ost (...)

Among the central claims forwarded in Arpaly and Schroeder’s In Praise of Desire are the following: A person acts praiseworthily who performs a right or good action out of an intention caused by the joint rationalizing property of her beliefs and her desire to perform that action under the aspect that makes it right or good. Virtues consist of desires for right or good things under the aspects that make them right or good or of mental states that manifest such (...)

The View from Calais.Jeremy Jennings - 2007 - Journal of the History of Ideas 68 (3):381-387.
This short article provides a critical assessment of Stefan Collini's account of the place and role of the intellectual in France. Whilst it does not wish to deny that intellectuals in France have provided a distinctive model of autonomous political engagement, it seeks to suggest that the reality in France might have been somewhat different from the stereotype of the public intellectual and that the position and behaviour of the French intellectual have not been very different from that experienced in (...)
