This is the first book to offer the best essays, articles, and speeches on ethics and intelligence that demonstrate the complex moral dilemmas in intelligence collection, analysis, and operations. Some are recently declassified and never before published, and all are written by authors whose backgrounds are as varied as their insights, including Robert M. Gates, former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency; John P. Langan, the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Professor of Catholic Social Thought at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown (...)

Bonaventure on Habitual Grace in Adam: A Change of Heart on Nature and Grace?Kevin E. Jones - 2018 - Franciscan Studies 76 (1):39-66.
While the nature-grace debate rages in Thomistic circles, St. Bonaventure's theological anthropology and his theology of grace is paid much less attention, with the exception of his argument that Adam was created apart from gratia gratum faciens, or in modern terms habitual or sanctifying grace.1 For this position he has come under some scrutiny. John Milbank connects Adam's short time without habitual grace to Bonaventure's deficient understanding of illumination as proof of an incipient voluntarism and a suspect pure nature theology.2 (...)

An Experimental Examination of the Effects of Individual and Situational Factors on Unethical Behavioral Intentions in the Workplace.Gwen E. Jones & Michael J. Kavanagh - 1996 - Journal of Business Ethics 15 (5):511 - 523.
Using a 2×2×2 experimental design, the effects of situational and individual variables on individuals' intentions to act unethically were investigated. Specifically examined were three situational variables: (1) quality of the work experience (good versus poor), (2) peer influences (unethical versus ethical), and (3) managerial influences (unethical versus ethical), and three individual variables: (4) locus of control, (5) Machiavellianism, and (6) gender, on individuals' behavioral intentions in an ethically ambiguous dilemma in an work setting. Experiment 1 revealed main effects for quality (...)

    Developing a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Curriculum for Professionalism and Scientific Integrity Training for Biomedical Graduate Students.N. L. Jones, A. M. Peiffer, A. Lambros, M. Guthold, A. D. Johnson, M. Tytell, A. E. Ronca & J. C. Eldridge - 2010 - Journal of Medical Ethics 36 (10):614-619.
A multidisciplinary faculty committee designed a curriculum to shape biomedical graduate students into researchers with a high commitment to professionalism and social responsibility and to provide students with tools to navigate complex, rapidly evolving academic and societal environments with a strong ethical commitment. The curriculum used problem-based learning (PBL), because it is active and learner-centred and focuses on skill and process development. Two courses were developed: Scientific Professionalism: Scientific Integrity addressed discipline-specific and broad professional norms and obligations for the ethical (...)

Ethical Practice in Internet Research Involving Vulnerable People: Lessons From a Self-Harm Discussion Forum Study (SharpTalk).S. Sharkey, R. Jones, J. Smithson, E. Hewis, T. Emmens, T. Ford & C. Owens - 2011 - Journal of Medical Ethics 37 (12):752-758.
The internet is widely used for health information and support, often by vulnerable people. Internet-based research raises both familiar and new ethical problems for researchers and ethics committees. While guidelines for internet-based research are available, it is unclear to what extent ethics committees use these. Experience of gaining research ethics approval for a UK study (SharpTalk), involving internet-based discussion groups with young people who self-harm and health professionals is described. During ethical review, unsurprisingly, concerns were raised about the vulnerability of (...)

Ensuring Respect for Persons in COMPASS: A Cluster Randomised Pragmatic Clinical Trial.Joseph E. Andrews, J. Brian Moore, Richard B. Weinberg, Mysha Sissine, Sabina Gesell, Jacquie Halladay, Wayne Rosamond, Cheryl Bushnell, Sara Jones, Paula Means, Nancy M. P. King, Diana Omoyeni & Pamela W. Duncan - 2018 - Journal of Medical Ethics 44 (8):560-566.
Cluster randomised clinical trials present unique challenges in meeting ethical obligations to those who are treated at a randomised site. Obtaining informed consent for research within the context of clinical care is one such challenge. In order to solve this problem it is important that an informed consent process be effective and efficient, and that it does not impede the research or the healthcare. The innovative approach to informed consent employed in the COMPASS study demonstrates the feasibility of upholding ethical (...)

Social Cognition, Social Skill, and Social Motivation Minimally Predict Social Interaction Outcomes for Autistic and Non-Autistic Adults.Kerrianne E. Morrison, Kilee M. DeBrabander, Desiree R. Jones, Robert A. Ackerman & Noah J. Sasson - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Social cognition, social skill, and social motivation have been extensively researched and characterized as atypical in autistic people, with the assumption that each mechanistically contributes to the broader social interaction difficulties that diagnostically define the condition. Despite this assumption, research has not directly assessed whether or how these three social domains contribute to actual real-world social interaction outcomes for autistic people. The current study administered standardized measures of social cognition, social skill, and social motivation to 67 autistic and 58 non-autistic (...)

Food Safety Risks, Disruptive Events and Alternative Beef Production: A Case Study of Agricultural Transition in Alberta.Debra J. Davidson, Kevin E. Jones & John R. Parkins - 2016 - Agriculture and Human Values 33 (2):359-371.
A key focus for agri-food scholars today pertains to emerging “alternative food movements,” particularly their long-term viability, and their potential to induce transitions in our prevailing conventional global agri-food systems. One under-studied element in recent research on sustainability transitions more broadly is the role of disruptive events in the emergence or expansion of these movements. We present the findings of a case study of the effect of a sudden acute food safety crisis—bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease—on alternative beef (...)

    Mildness and the Density of Rational Points on Certain Transcendental Curves.G. O. Jones, D. J. Miller & M. E. M. Thomas - 2011 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 52 (1):67-74.
We use a result due to Rolin, Speissegger, and Wilkie to show that definable sets in certain o-minimal structures admit definable parameterizations by mild maps. We then use this parameterization to prove a result on the density of rational points on curves defined by restricted Pfaffian functions.
