In this paper I intend to identify some points of disagreement between theism and atheism. I will try to point out three epistemological clashes occurring in the controversial treatment of cosmological arguments. I am not assessing the arguments pro and contra, which have been thoroughly studied and discussed, but just trying to understand the misunderstanding.

Mark Clavier's On Consumer Culture, Identity, The Church and the Rhetorics of Delight draws on Augustine of Hippo to provide a theological explanation for the success of marketing and consumer culture. Augustine's thought, rooted in rhetorical theory, presents a brilliant understanding of the experiences of damnation and salvation that takes seriously the often hidden psychology of human motivation. Clavier examines how Augustine's keen insight into the power of delight over personal notions of freedom and self-identity can be used to shed (...) light on how the constant lure of promised happiness shapes our identities as consumers. From Augustine's perspective, it is only by addressing the sources of delight within consumerism and by rediscovering the wellsprings of God's delight that we can effectively challenge consumer culture. In this paper, we criticize Hans Jonas’s analogy between God’s power and the operation of physical forces. We wonder why, if omnipotence had proved to be "a self-contradictory concept", does Jonas still need to invoke the occurrence of horrendous evils to support the view that "God is not all powerful". We suggest that "God’s retreating into himself in order to give room to the world, renouncing his being and divesting himself of his deity" are beautiful but inconsistent metaphors of creation. (...) Consequence is at the heart of logic, and an account of consequence offers a vital tool in the evaluation of arguments. This text presents what the authors term as 'logical pluralism' arguing that the notion of logical consequence doesn't pin down one deductive consequence relation; it allows for many of them.

There is a widespread, popular view—and one I basically endorse—that Nietzsche is, in one sense of the word, a nihilist. As Arthur Danto put it some time ago, according to Nietzsche, “there is nothing in [the world] which might sensibly be supposed to have value.” As interpreters of Nietzsche, though, we cannot simply stop here. Nietzsche's higher men, Übermenschen, “genuine philosophers”, free spirits—the types Nietzsche wants to bring forth from the human, all-too-human herds he sees around him with the fish (...) hooks, as he says, of his books—seem to engage in what looks like valuing. These free spirits are supposed to revalue the old values—revaluing, as is clear from the texts, is not simply to remove the old values from circulation (Nietzsche uses “umwerten” and not “entwerten”)—and they are supposed to create new values. And, of course, Nietzsche himself, free spirit that he is, takes on the task of revaluing all values and seems to assert many a strident evaluation. So we need to say more here. What are Nietzsche and his free spirits up to when they engage in what looks, for all the world, like a practice of valuing? What is the practice of valuing Nietzsche is recommending for his free spirits? I argue for two claims: (i) First, we end up facing an interpretive puzzle when we attempt to explain how Nietzsche's free spirits are supposed to engage in a practice of valuing. (ii) Second, we can solve the interpretive puzzle by taking Nietzsche's free spirits to be engaged in a fictionalist simulacrum of valuing. (shrink)

There is a strong claim that the world’s createdness, if true, cannot be known but through revelation. In this paper we try to dismiss this claim by arguing that creation cannot be merely a revealed truth (revelabile tantum), since it is on the contrary the very preamble to any genuine revelation. Ontologically, no revelation can happen in a self-existent world. No creation, no revelation. Epistemically, no revelation is to be admitted but on the assumption that the world depends, for its (...) existence and operation, on a supernatural agent. No admittance of creative power, no justified identification of any revelatory activity. (shrink)

En dépit de toutes les proclamations sur la " mort de la métaphysique ", la philosophie ne peut aujourd'hui, pas plus qu'hier, se passer de l'interrogation métaphysique. Si elle décidait d'abandonner l'enquête sur les questions au-delà de l'expérience, elle laisserait le champ libre à toutes les spéculations irrationnelles, aux charlatanismes de la quête spirituelle, aux marchands d'illusion illuminée. La question " Pourquoi y a-t-il quelque chose plutôt que rien? " semble réunir à elle seule quelques vertus et tous les péchés (...) que l'on prête à la métaphysique. Certainement insoluble, elle en montre bien le caractère ridicule, dépassé, voire inepte. Evidemment radicale, elle indique ce que la métaphysique a d'inévitable, de nécessaire, voire d'ultime. Elle est en tout cas un nœud de difficultés et de concepts dont les doctrines classiques sont loin d'avoir épuisé les possibles et sur lesquels la discussion s'avère encore féconde. La première partie de ce livre interroge donc la question elle-même : est-elle une ou multiple, a-t-elle un sens ou non, quelles raisons a-t-on pu avancer pour la disqualifier ou pour prétendre y avoir répondu? C'est à approfondir quelques réponses nouvelles, et possibles, qu'est consacrée la seconde partie qui fait surgir d'autres problèmes : la plausibilité des réponses théistes et naturalistes, la pensabilité du néant, l'impossibilité d'un monde vide, les limites du principe de raison suffisante. What happens when someone acts? A familiar answer goes like this. There is something that the agent wants, and there is an action that he believes conducive to its attainment. His desire for the end, and his belief in the action as a means, justify taking the action, and they jointly cause an intention to take it, which in turn causes the corresponding movements of the agent's body. I think that the standard story is flawed in several respects. The flaw (...) that will concern me in this paper is that the story fails to include an agent-or, more precisely, fails to cast the agent in his proper role. (shrink)

There is a claim that the natural capacity for knowledge of God is presupposed by the acceptance of any revelation. We inquire into whether this restriction is satisfactory. There is a stronger claim that natural knowledge has to be exercised for someone to welcome revelation. There is an additional claim that natural knowledge of the preambles to the articles of faith may not obtain. We try to make sense of this doctrine of impeached preambles to faith, by considering its phrasing (...) not only in the first person singular, nor in the third person, but in the first plural person, where it may suggest a kind of social division of tasks among believers. Theories of truthmaking have been introduced quite recently in epistemology. Having little to do with truth serums, or truths drugs, their concern is to define truth in terms of a certain relation between truthbearers and truthmakers. Those theories make an attempt to remedy what is supposed to be lacking in classical theories of truth, especially in Alfred Tarski’s semantic theory.

Abstract I argue that meaning in life is importantly influenced by bioloical ties. More specifically, I maintain that knowing one's relatives and especially one's parents provides a kind of self-knowledge that is of irreplaceable value in the life-task of identity formation. These claims lead me to the conclusion that it is immoral to create children with the intention that they be alienated from their bioloical relatives?for example, by donor conception.

Hume, dans l’examen de la recevabilité d’un témoignage en faveur d’un prétendu miracle, énonce un critère simple : S est crédible en relatant M dans la mesure où la probabilité que S mente ou se trompe est plus faible que la probabilité que M ne se soit pas produit. L’application de ce critère se révèle malaisée. Elle met d’ailleurs Hume en porte-à-faux avec sa notion de lois de la nature. L’expérience, jusque-là ouverte à tout ce qui n’est pas contradictoire, devient (...) tout à coup « solide et inaltérable ». En outre, si Hume suggère deux définitions du miracle, il ne fait jouer que celle qui omet l’intervention surnaturelle! Hume évalue la probabilité des miracles en l’absence de considérations sur les raisons que la divinité aurait ou non de produire, et à quelle fréquence. La fin de non-recevoir est ici patente. Longtemps éclipsée, la question de la compatibilité de la (pre)science divine avec la liberté a été exhumée dans les débats de philosophie analytique. Les promoteurs de la logique temporelle ont proposé un argument d’incompatibilité qui continue d’exercer la sagacité des commentateurs. L’objet de cet article est de suggérer que la conception atemporaliste de Dieu, dont on explique pourquoi elle est si peu en vogue aujourd’hui, est à même, sinon de résoudre complètement, au moins d’atténuer considérablement ces problèmes de compatibilité, qui (...) rejoignent le problème de l’articulation de la souveraineté absolue de Dieu avec la contribution authentique des causes secondes. Il faut, dit-on, de tout pour faire un monde. Mais à force de tout comprendre, ce concept de monde ne recouvre plus rien de précis. Il désigne une somme de parties hétérogènes, comprenant pêle-mêle : constituants matériels, propriétés physiques, événements, personnes, actions... Ces fragments du monde, nous ne les connaissons qu'à travers le prisme de nos besoins ou de nos habitudes linguistiques et culturelles. Faudra-t-il renoncer à définir un concept de monde, au profit d'une multiplicité de perceptions du monde? Ce (...) livre propose d'examiner les principales tentatives, classiques ou contemporaines, de déterminer le concept de monde. Il évalue les grandes thèses métaphysiques sur la réalité du monde par rapport à nos représentations. Il discute les constructions esthétique, morale ou religieuse d'autres mondes possibles. Il affronte la question d'une science de l'univers. Habiter le monde pourrait nous interdire d'en être le spectateur impartial. Avons-nous, en définitive, affaire à un monde commun? (shrink)

Il ne suffit pas d'écarter la confusion entre création et nouveauté du monde pour donner droit de cité en philosophie à la thèse de la création. Le dogme de la création est-il un corps étranger jadis imposé aux philosophes dans l'exercice de leurs fonctions? Tel est le préjugé schopenhauerien dont on voudrait d'abord faire justice. La création n'est-elle pas alors, à tout le moins, une marotte ethnocentrique, tributaire de la seule révélation biblique? On décrira et discutera alors la prétendue inassimilabilité (...) de la thèse de la création par la philosophie selon de nombreux historiens de la philosophie qui relancent un débat ancien mais peut-être pas périmé: la thèse de la création est-elle soluble dans la philosophie? It is not enough to dispel the confusion that might exist between the idea of creation and that of the novelty of the world to provide the creationist thesis with a legitimate place in philosophy. Is the dogma of creation a foreign body that used to be imposed on philosophers as part of their professional duties? Such is the Schopenhauerian prejudice we would like to dispose of. Yet, cannot one argue that creation is an ethnocentric fad, depending on biblical revelation alone? We will describe and discuss the claim of the alleged non-assimilability of the creationist thesis by philosophy, which is advocated by many historians of philosophy who have reopened an old but maybe not outdated debate: is the creationist thesis soluble in philosophy? Supervaluationism is often described as the most popular semantic treatment of indeterminacy. There’s little consensus, however, about how to fill out the bare-bones idea to include a characterization of logical consequence. The paper explores one methodology for choosing between the logics: pick a logic thatnorms beliefas classical consequence is standardly thought to do. The main focus of the paper considers a variant of standard supervaluational, on which we can characterizedegrees of determinacy. It applies the methodology above to focus ondegree logic. (...) This is developed first in a basic, single-premise case; and then extended to the multipremise case, and to allowdegreesof consequence. The metatheoretic properties of degree logic are set out. On the positive side, the logic is supraclassical—all classical valid sequents are degree logic valid. Strikingly, metarules such as cut and conjunction introduction fail. (shrink)

Retributive theories of punishment argue that punishing a criminal for a crime she committed is sufficient reason for a justified and morally permissible punishment. But what about when the state gets lucky in its decision to punish? I argue that retributive theories of punishment are subject to “Gettier” style cases from epistemology. Such cases demonstrate that the state needs more than to just get lucky, and as these retributive theories of punishment stand, there is no anti-luck condition. I’ll argue that (...) Gettier-style cases demonstrate an impermissible instance of punishment, even though they meet the conditions of retributive theories of punishment. Retributive theories are, therefore, too weak. The safety condition from epistemology provides the anti-luck condition needed for permissible punishment. I argue that two forms of retributivism, rights-forfeiture and what I call standard retributivism, are both subject to Gettier-style cases. Unlike the literature on standards of proof, this paper argues that safety is a condition on punishment itself, i.e., in all nearby possible worlds, the accuser must correctly accuse the convicted for the crime they actually committed.
