Ingolf U. Dalferth studies the complexity of this procedure in three thought processes which deal with the central concepts in the Christian understanding of malum as privation (a lack of good), as evil-doing and as a lack of faith.

The paper discusses the problem of self-sacrifice as posed by Derrida in Foi et Savior and by Schiller in the Theosophie des Julius. Whereas Derrida understands self-sacrifice as an act of violence against oneself in order not to subject others to violence, Schiller rightly insists that one must distinguish between egotistical and altruistic self-sacrifice. But even this doesn’t go far enough: Altruistic self-sacrifice is different from suffering death as the consequence of an entirely unselfish love. Whoever loses his life out (...) of love does not give it up for others, whether selfishly or unselfishly. He loves the other—to death. Such a death is not a (self-)sacrifice. The paper examines Kant’s idea of autonomy as well as his conception of radical evil against the background of the theological tradition relevant to him. It is shown that both of them can be understood as ethical secularizations of theological concepts—the freedom of God and the concept of original sin—and that in both cases the problems of the theological tradition reoccur.

D. Z. Phillips is widely assumed to have held that Christian immortality has no reality outside of language. The author challenges that assumption, demonstrating that Phillips wished to show that contemporary analytic philosophy distorts the reality that immortality has for believers. While most philosophical accounts of Christian immortality depend upon terms that have little religious significance, Phillips offered accounts that stress the centrality of that significance. The author gives an account of the sort of philosophical attention that Phillips gave to (...) Christian immortality and demonstrates Phillips’ lament for both the lack of this sort of attention in contemporary philosophy as well as the loss of certain ways of living that exemplify a belief in eternal life with God. Is it true that insistence on autonomy and diversity weakens social cohesion, or that striving for justice, equity and equality undermines individual freedom? A long tradition has seen the common good as the social order in which individuals and groups can best strive for perfection. Liberal societies insist that this perfecting must not be done at the cost of others or by restricting the right to such a striving only to some and not granting it also to others. However, in (...) a time of growing social and cultural diversity and inequality the traditional tensions between individual freedom and social responsibility have increased to a point where the binding forces of our societies seem to be exhausted. How much individuality and what kinds of diversity are we ready to accept? How much autonomy and diversity are possible without destroying social cohesion and human solidarity? Die Metaphysik ist in weiten Kreisen der Philosophie und Theologie wieder salonfahig. Ob aber tatsachlich erledigt ist, was unter dem "Ende der Metaphysik" zu denken versucht wurde, wird gegenwartig hochst kontrovers diskutiert: Schon was unter "Metaphysik" und "Metaphysikkritik" verstanden wird, ist umstritten. Erst recht aber scheiden sich die Geister an der Frage, ob das Ende der Metaphysik auch die Auflosung des Gottesgedankens bedeutet: Ist es wahr, dass Metaphysik treibt, wer Gott denkt? Geht es darum, schlechte Metaphysik durch bessere zu ersetzen (...) oder ist das Setzen auf Metaphysik insgesamt als Irrweg des Denkens Gottes zuruckzuweisen? Zu wenig wird bedacht, dass das Denken Gottes selbst Quelle und Kritik metaphysischen Denkens sein kann. Gerade deshalb ist zu klaren, was es heisst, Gott nichtmetaphysisch oder metaphysikkritisch zu denken. (shrink)

Gegenwart ist keine Eigenschaft von Ereignissen oder des Erlebens von Ereignissen, sondern Teil einer Orientierungsstrategie in den Zeitstrukturen der Lebens- und Ereigniswelt. Zeit gäbe es auch, wenn es uns nicht gäbe. Von der Gegenwart lässt sich das nicht sagen. Zeit gibt es ohne uns, Gegenwart nur mit und durch uns. Und beides nicht ohne die Gegenwart Gottes.

Wie ist Gott zu denken, damit Gott wirklich gedacht wird? In welchem Sinn kann gesagt werden, Gott existiert? Eine zentrale theologisch-religionsphilosophische Tradition der Neuzeit nimmt zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen immer wieder Bezug auf das sogenannte 'ontologische Argument'. Ingolf U. Dalferth setzt sich mit zentralen Entwürfen dieser Tradition von Anselm von Canterbury, Whitehead und Hartshorne kritisch auseinander. Ihnen setzt er eine christologisch-trinitarische Alternative entgegen, in der dieselben Grundfragen (Wer ist Gott? Was ist Gott? Ist Gott?) anders beantwortet werden. Wenn Gott wirklich (...) als Gott gedacht werden soll, ist er so zu denken, wie und als was er sich selbstverständlich macht. Denken des Selbstverständlichen ist für den Autor die Kurzformel for das rechte Denken Gottes. The authors of this volume analyze the origins, problems, similarities and differences within this theological movement, examine their arguments and question their significance for the present. In doing so, they trace the connection to the theology of the word of God and 20th century existential hermeneutics as well as to present day (...) event hermeneutics. German description: Hermeneutische Theologie ist die Kurzformel eines theologischen Programms, das eng mit den Namen Rudolf Bultmann, Ernst Fuchs, Gerhard Ebeling und Eberhard Jungel verbunden ist.
