U.S. Multinationals and Human Rights: A Theoretical and Empirical Assessment of Extractive Versus Nonextractive Sectors.Indra de Soysa, Nicole Janz & Krishna Chaitanya Vadlamannati - 2021 - Business and Society 60 (8):2136-2174.
The consequences of foreign direct investment for human rights protection are poorly understood. We propose that the impact of FDI varies across industries. In particular, extractive firms in the oil and mining industries go where the resources are located and are bound to such investment, which creates a status quo bias among them when it comes to supporting repressive rulers. The same is not true for nonextractive multinational corporations in manufacturing or services, which can, in comparison, exit problematic countries more (...)

This article aims (...)

The Business Value of ESG Performance: The Indian Context.Indra Trivedi & Hemlata Chelawat - 2016 - Asian Journal of Business Ethics 5 (1 - 2):195-210.
Today, business corporations across the globe are moving beyond the short-term myopic goal of profit maximization to long-term sustainability goals involving environmental, social and corporate governance goals. This is due to the growing realization that ESG factors constitute a significant source of risk for the business and can affect their financial returns. Academic research has shown that improved ESG performance has lowered risk and enhanced financial performance but results seemed to vary widely across countries. Regrettably, this subject remains largely un-researched (...)

Board Diversity and Corporate Social Disclosure: Evidence From Vietnam.Trang Cam Hoang, Indra Abeysekera & Shiguang Ma - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 151 (3):833-852.
Debates around sound corporate governance propose board diversity as a key attribute to sufficiently challenge executive management for stakeholder engagement. This study contributes to this debate by empirically investigating the effect of board diversity on corporate social disclosure of Vietnamese listed firms. The study finds a significantly positive effect of diversity-in-boards on CSD while diversity-of-boards has no effect on CSD. The results contribute by showing that a single theoretical approach can provide an adequate explanation for board diversity. The study contributes (...)

Service Robotics: Do You Know Your New Companion? Framing an Interdisciplinary Technology Assessment.Indra Spiecker Genannt Döhmann, Ingrid Ott, Mathias Gutmann, Martin Fischer, Thomas Dreier, Rüdiger Dillmann & Michael Decker - 2011 - Poiesis and Praxis 8 (1):25-44.
Service-Robotic—mainly defined as “non-industrial robotics”—is identified as the next economical success story to be expected after robots have been ubiquitously implemented into industrial production lines. Under the heading of service-robotic, we found a widespread area of applications reaching from robotics in agriculture and in the public transportation system to service robots applied in private homes. We propose for our interdisciplinary perspective of technology assessment to take the human user/worker as common focus. In some cases, the user/worker is the effective subject (...)

Indra's Search for the Self and the Beginnings of Philosophical Perplexity in India.Matthew Kapstein - 1988 - Religious Studies 24 (2):239 - 256.
In the present essay our concern will be with some of the earliest documents that shed light on the development of Indian reflections on the puzzles of personal identity. These texts are derived from the Upanisads, which exemplify a type of literature that some philosophers may regard as classic, but not as philosophy. What I will be proposing here is that we attempt to regard such very ancient sources of Indian thought more philosophically, more in the manner that some recent (...)

What Do Stakeholders Care About? Investigating Corporate Social and Environmental Disclosure in China.Yingjun Lu & Indra Abeysekera - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 144 (1):169-184.
This study investigates the social and environmental disclosure practices of socially responsible Chinese listed firms as displayed in their annual reports and corporate social responsibility reports from the perspective of stakeholders. A stakeholder-driven, three-dimensional social and environmental disclosure index that integrates the quantity and two aspects of the quality of disclosure perceived by stakeholders is constructed to assess the social and environmental disclosures in firm annual reports and CSR reports. The study results indicate that stakeholders perceive different disclosure types and (...)

Hua-yen is regarded as the highest form of Buddhism by most modern Japanese and Chinese scholars. This book is a description and analysis of the Chinese form of Buddhism called Hua-yen, Flower Ornament, based largely on one of the more systematic treatises of its third patriarch. Hua-yen Buddhism strongly resembles Whitehead's process philosophy, and has strong implications for modern philosophy and religion. Hua-yen Buddhism explores the philosophical system of Hua-yen in greater detail than does Garma C.C. Chang's _The Buddhist Teaching (...)

The argumentative structure of this article can be summarized as follows: 1) Spinoza was repeatedly accused of eleaticism; 2) there is a rupture with the eleaticism when one admits the ‘multivocity’ of the logical operators “is” and “is not”; as can be seen, for example, 2.1) in the discussion introducing the Great Genera in Plato’s Sophist, and 2.2) in a certain use made by Aristotle of the category’s doctrine in order to soften the Parmenidean version of the Principle of Non-Contradiction. Enrique Gómez Arboleya chose as the subject for his doctoral thesis the study of Hermann Heller's theoretical proposals. This research was done in Nazi Germany to be read in the Republican Spain of 1935, but was not published until 1940, after the Civil War. The aim of this article is to design the contents of the threefold topic indigenous peoples-habitat-territory, from a decolonizing perspective. From this starting point the topic confronts the complicated challenge of intercultural dialogue. The work is in four sections: a) Terminological clarifications of the subject under discussion; what is understood by territoriality, natural resources, and biodiversity in the indigenous peoples’ logical frame, and how these concepts are understood differently by Western law; b) Critical analysis of indigenous claims in multilateral environmental (...)

Healthcare systems across the globe are struggling with increasing costs and worsening outcomes. This presents those responsible for overseeing healthcare with a challenge. Increasingly, policymakers, politicians, clinical entrepreneurs and computer and data scientists argue that a key part of the solution will be ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) – particularly Machine Learning (ML). This argument stems not from the belief that all healthcare needs will soon be taken care of by “robot doctors.” Instead, it is an argument that rests on the classic (...)
