Lifestyle Welfare: How the New Class has Transformed the Scandinavian Welfare State.Klaus Solberg Søilen - 2009 - Telos: Critical Theory of the Contemporary 2009 (148):73-85.
Three hypotheses are presented in this article, each supported by observations and theory. The first is that party distinctions in Scandinavian politics no longer involve coherent ideas related to political ideologies, but that parties instead have become machines to maintain power and keep supporters employed. The second is that the tradition among political parties in Scandinavia, and especially in Sweden, for accepting federalist measures as a response to central state inefficiencies has been checked by the development of the welfare state; (...)

    Disclosure of information to potential subjects on research recruitment web sites.R. Klitzman, I. Albala, J. Siragusa, J. Patel & P. S. Appelbaum - 2007 - IRB: Ethics & Human Research 30 (1):15-20.
Despite the developing influence of the Internet as a tool for reaching potential subjects, little empirical information exits on how individuals are recruited to participate in clinical research via the Internet or on what type of information clinical trial Web sites provide. This study revealed that roughly half of the sites failed to mention study risks or specific details about what the study required on the part of participants, while nearly three-quarters described incentives to participate. Moreover, for-profit entities were more (...)

Assessment of social justice dimensions in young adults: The contribution of the belief in a just world and social dominance orientation upon its rising.Edgardo Etchezahar, Alicia Barreiro, Miguel Ángel Albalá Genol & Antonio Francisco Maldonado Rico - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The aim of the study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Social Justice Scale, composed by Representation, Recognition, and Redistribution dimensions. Likewise, the contribution of social dominance and the belief in a just world in each dimension were analyzed. A total of 471 young adults residing in Madrid participated in the online preliminary study, with an age range of 18–42 years with different genders. The main results indicated adequate psychometric properties for Social Justice Scale through its three dimensions. (...)

Between the folds: Reconceptualizing the current state of early childhood technology development in China.Wenwei Luo, Ilene R. Berson, Michael J. Berson & Sophia Han - 2022 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 54 (10):1655-1669.
Rapid development and expansion of technology has created massive shifts in people’s lives around the globe. China’s focus on transforming the nation into a global leader in technology has resulted in the proliferation of policies, which are typically interpreted as part of the Western neoliberal economic expansion and imperialism. However, in this article, we contest what we claim to ‘know’ about technology or technicity both locally and globally within the context of early childhood technology development in China. Chinese philosopher Yuk (...)

The Ethical Health Lawyer: An Empirical Assessment of Moral Decision Making.Joshua E. Perry, Ilene N. Moore, Bruce Barry, Ellen Wright Clayton & Amanda R. Carrico - 2009 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 37 (3):461-475.
Writing in 1999, legal ethics scholar Brad Wendel noted that “[v]ery little empirical work has been done on the moral decision making of lawyers.” Indeed, since the mid-1990s, few empirical studies have attempted to explore how attorneys deliberate about ethical dilemmas they encounter in their practice. Moreover, while past research has explored some of the ethical issues confronting lawyers practicing in certain specific areas of practice, no published data exists probing the moral mind of health care lawyers. As signaled by (...)

The Ethical Health Lawyer: An Empirical Assessment of Moral Decision Making.Joshua E. Perry, Ilene N. Moore, Bruce Barry, Ellen Wright Clayton & Amanda R. Carrico - 2009 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 37 (3):461-475.
The empirical literature exploring lawyers and their moral decision making is limited despite the “crisis” of unethical and unprofessional behavior in the bar that has been well documented for over a decade. In particular we are unaware of any empirical studies that investigate the moral landscape of the health lawyer’s practice. In an effort to address this gap in the literature, an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Vanderbilt University designed an empirical study to gather preliminary evidence regarding the moral reasoning (...)

Fetal protection: Law, ethics and corporate policy. [REVIEW]Ira Sprotzer & Ilene V. Goldberg - 1992 - Journal of Business Ethics 11 (10):731-735.
Corporate fetal protection policies are designed to protect unborn children from exposure to harmful substances in the workplace. In recent years, a number of corporations have instituted fetal protection policies which excluded all fertile female employees from jobs which exposed them to hazardous substances. Critics argued that these policies discriminated against women, and several lawsuits were filed. The United States Supreme Court recently decided a case involving the fetal protection policy of Johnson Controls, Inc. This article will analyze the impact of (...)

  19. Optimal ways for companies to use Facebook as a marketing channel.Linnea Hansson, Anton Wrangmo & Klaus Solberg Søilen - 2013 - Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society 11 (2):112-126.
PurposeSocial media has increased as a marketing channel, and Facebook is the biggest social media company globally. Facebook contains both positive and negative information about companies; therefore, it is important for companies to manage their Facebook page to best serve their own interests. Although most users are familiar with business and marketing activities on Facebook, they use it primarily for fun and personal purposes. The most effective methods for companies to use Facebook have not been clear. The personal nature of (...)

Exception From Informed Consent: How IRB Reviewers Assess Community Consultation and Public Disclosure.Makini Chisolm-Straker, Denise Nassisi, Mohamud R. Daya, Jennifer N. B. Cook, Ilene F. Wilets, Cindy Clesca & Lynne D. Richardson - 2021 - AJOB Empirical Bioethics 12 (1):24-32.
Exception from Informed Consent (EFIC) regulations detail specific circumstances in which Institutional Review Boards (IRB) can approve studies where obtaining informed consent is not possible prior to subject enrollment. To better understand how IRB members evaluate community consultation (CC) and public disclosure (PD) processes and results, semi-structured interviews of EFIC-experienced IRB members were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis.Interviews with 11 IRB members revealed similar approaches to reviewing EFIC studies. Most use summaries of CC activities to determine community members’ attitudes; none (...)

    The Hydra.Carl E. Schneider - 2010 - Hastings Center Report 40 (4):9-11.
Almost nobody favors long consent forms for prospective research subjects. Almost everybody thinks they interfere with informed consent’s purpose—good decisions. Nevertheless, almost everybody believes consent forms have long been getting longer. Years ago, Paul Appelbaum lamented the “tendency to cram ever more information into consent forms.”1 Weeks ago, Ilene Albala and her colleagues (one of them Appelbaum) reported in IRB: Ethics & Human Research that the length of one institutional review board’s forms “increased roughly linearly by an average (...)
