Phenomenology in Action in Psychotherapy: On Pure Psychology and its Applications in Psychotherapy and Mental Health Care.Ian Rory Owen - 2015 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
This book takes Edmund Husserl's phenomenology and applies it to help psychotherapy practitioners formulate complex psychological problems. The reader will learn about Husserl's system of understanding and its concepts that point to first-person lived experience, and about the work of Husserl scholars who have developed a way to be precise about the experiences that clients have. Through exploring the connection between academic philosophy of consciousness and mental health, themes of biopsychosocial treatment planning, psychopathology of personality and psychological disorders, and the (...)

In Lieu of a Review of the Latest English Translation of Ideas I: A Reading of Husserl's Original Intent and its Relevance for Empirical Qualitative Psychology.Ian Rory Owen - 2015 - Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology 15 (1):1-13.
Husserl's phenomenology provides theory for empirical science and other practices in the form of transcendental philosophy after Kant. This phenomenology is a reflection on mental objects in relation to mental processes, some of which are shared in culture: a theoretical framework that grounds and co-ordinates theory-production for empirical practice. The importance of the original work of Edmund Husserl for contemporary empirical psychology is that it provides the conceptual justification for the methods employed and the interpretative stances taken. Informed theoretically by (...)

Still, Nothing: Mammy and Black Asexual Possibility.Ianna Hawkins Owen - 2018 - Feminist Review 120 (1):70-84.
Although many iterations of the mammy in the last two centuries have received analytical attention, the construction of this figure as asexual or undesiring and undesirable remains to be interrogated. This essay attends to this under-theorised dimension of her image. Resisting a reading of the mammy as fixed in silence, I assert that she might instead ‘say nothing’, and bring into focus a black asexual agency that I call a declarative silence. This strategy of ‘saying nothing’ is then explored in (...)

The Husserlian phenomenology of consciousness and cognitive science: we can see the path but nobody is on it.Ian Owen & Neil Morris - 1999 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 6 (2-3):269-273.
This response chooses as the sole topic for its concern the central question ‘how can Husserl's approach to consciousness be used to inform cognitive science?’ This paper is a response to the papers on phenomenology, in particular the one by Varela. The response makes brief comments on Husserl's phenomenology and the breadth of cognitive science is alluded to as well as its wide spectrum of phenomena. The authors are agreed that there could be a Husserlian cognitive science, but it would (...)
