This essay introduces this special issue on virtue ethics in relation to military AI. It describes the current situation of military AI ethics as following that of AI ethics in general, caught between consequentialism and deontology. Virtue ethics serves as an alternative that can address some of the weaknesses of these dominant forms of ethics. The essay describes how the articles in the issue exemplify the value of virtue-related approaches for these questions, before ending with thoughts for further research.

Mele questions the prevalence and ontological status of strong forms of self-deception, as well as our attempt at experimental demonstration. Without validated indicators outside laboratory contexts, statements about prevalence are purely speculative. Conceptualizing self-deception without positing the motivated lack of awareness of a contradictory belief is unsatisfactory in dealing with issues of “agency,” that is, how can we stop the processing of threatening information unless we recognize that the information is threatening?

Optimal Predictions in Everyday Cognition: The Wisdom of Individuals or Crowds?Michael C. Mozer, Harold Pashler & Hadjar Homaei - 2008 - Cognitive Science 32 (7):1133-1147.
asked individuals to make predictions about the duration or extent of everyday events (e.g., cake baking times), and reported that predictions were optimal, employing Bayesian inference based on veridical prior distributions. Although the predictions conformed strikingly to statistics of the world, they reflect averages over many individuals. On the conjecture that the accuracy of the group response is chiefly a consequence of aggregating across individuals, we constructed simple, heuristic approximations to the Bayesian model premised on the hypothesis that individuals have (...)

Toward a Sociological Imagination: Bridging Specialized Fields.Bernard Phillips, Harold Kincaid, Thomas Scheff, Chanoch Jacobsen, James C. Kimberly, Richard Lachmann, David R. Maines, David W. Britt, Suzanne M. Retzinger, Thomas J. Scheff & Howard S. Becker - 2002 - Upa.
Toward A Sociological Imagination builds on the ideas C. Wright Mills expressed in The Sociological Imagination for an approach to the scientific method broad enough to open up to the full range of knowledge within the sociology discipline. In this book, nine sociologists and one philosopher provide detailed tests of the utility of the approach within diverse substantive sociological areas.

Artificial intelligence and conversational agent evolution – a cautionary tale of the benefits and pitfalls of advanced technology in education, academic research, and practice.Curtis C. Cain, Carlos D. Buskey & Gloria J. Washington - 2023 - Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society 21 (4):394-405.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and conversational agents, emphasizing their potential benefits while also highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring to prevent unethical applications. Design/methodology/approach As AI becomes more prevalent in academia and research, it is crucial to explore ways to ensure ethical usage of the technology and to identify potentially unethical usage. This manuscript uses a popular AI chatbot to write the introduction and parts of the body of a (...)

    The Tribute Quota Lists from 430 to 425 b.c.Harold B. Mattingly - 1978 - Classical Quarterly 28 (01):83-.
Bradeen and McGregor with exemplary skill and patience re-examined the almost desperately worn front face of ATL ii List 26. They were able to prove that the lines of its prescript were precisely forty-seven letters long. This excludes the possibility of dating this list 430/29 or 428/7 B.C., since only six spaces are available for the first numeral. They rightly maintained that the ATL Lists 25 and 26 must be kept together, but unlike them I would challenge the ATL numbering (...)
