Characteristics and Generation Mechanism of Gullies and Mega-Pockmarks in the Zhongjiannan Basin, Western South China Sea.Minghui Geng, Haibin Song, Yongxian Guan, Jiang Xin Chen & Yang Bai - 2017 - Interpretation: SEG 5 (3):SM49-SM59.
The paleoceanography and deep-water circulation process of the South China Sea is still poorly understood. We have evaluated multibeam bathymetry and multichannel seismic reflection data acquired by Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey in recent years, and we investigate the characteristics, distribution, and generation mechanism of submarine seabed gullies and mega-pockmarks in the northern Zhongjiannan Basin of the SCS. Our data reveal that there are northwest–southeast-trending gullies and randomly or linearly arraying mega-pockmarks in the northern depression of the Zhongjiannan Basin. Gullies are (...)

    Nonlinear Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix Texture Analysis for Improved Seismic Facies Interpretation.Haibin Di & Dengliang Gao - 2017 - Interpretation: SEG 5 (3):SJ31-SJ40.
Seismic texture analysis is a useful tool for delineating subsurface geologic features from 3D seismic surveys, and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix method has been popularly applied for seismic texture discrimination since its first introduction in the 1990s. The GLCM texture analysis consists of two components: to rescale seismic amplitude by a user-defined number of gray levels and to perform statistical analysis on the spatial arrangement of gray levels within an analysis window. Traditionally, the linear transformation is simply used for amplitude (...)

    Love Without Desire.Andrew Song - 2022 - Philosophy Today 66 (4):799-815.
This article advances a close reading of Hannah Arendt’s use of the phrase amo: volo ut sis in her posthumously published lecture “Willing.” Through this close reading, the essay argues that this affirmation of love, which Arendt translates as “I love you, I want you to be,” describes an enduring activity by which we unite our minds to the world. This argument is analyzed formally and practically: the formal aspect addresses love as an activity which has its end in itself (...)

3D Structural-Orientation Vector Guided Autotracking for Weak Seismic Reflections: A New Tool for Shale Reservoir Visualization and Interpretation.Haibin Di, Dengliang Gao & Ghassan AlRegib - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (4):SN47-SN56.
Recognizing and tracking weak reflections, which are characterized by low amplitude, low signal-to-noise ratio, and low degree of lateral continuity, is a long-time issue in 3D seismic interpretation and reservoir characterization. The problem is particularly acute with unconventional, fractured shale reservoirs, in which the impedance contrast is low and/or reservoir beds are below the tuning thickness. To improve the performance of interpreting weak reflections associated with shale reservoirs, we have developed a new workflow for weak-reflection tracking guided by a robust (...)

Improving Seismic Fault Detection by Super-Attribute-Based Classification.Haibin Di, Mohammod Amir Shafiq, Zhen Wang & Ghassan AlRegib - 2019 - Interpretation 7 (3):SE251-SE267.
Fault interpretation is one of the routine processes used for subsurface structure mapping and reservoir characterization from 3D seismic data. Various techniques have been developed for computer-aided fault imaging in the past few decades; for example, the conventional methods of edge detection, curvature analysis, red-green-blue rendering, and the popular machine-learning methods such as the support vector machine, the multilayer perceptron, and the convolutional neural network. However, most of the conventional methods are performed at the sample level with the local reflection (...)

Does Ownership Matter? Firm Ownership and Corporate Illegality in China.Yongqiang Gao & Haibin Yang - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 168 (2):431-445.
This study explores whether or not a firm’s ownership status, as state-owned enterprise or private-owned enterprise, will influence its likelihood of engaging in illegality in China. We build our arguments on the institution-based view, positing that firms rationally pursue their interests in the distinct institutional context of China. Compared to SOEs, POEs have limited access to institutional resources, the lack of which threatens their development or even survival, forcing them to “break rules” to overcome institutional barriers. We thus suggest that (...)

    The Biology of Bird-Song Dialects.Myron Charles Baker & Michael A. Cunningham - 1985 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 8 (1):85-100.
No single theory so far proposed gives a wholly satisfactory account of the origin and maintenance of bird-song dialects. This failure is the consequence of a weak comparative literature that precludes careful comparisons among species or studies, and of the complexity of the issues involved. Complexity arises because dialects seem to bear upon a wide range of features in the life history of bird species. We give an account of the principal issues in bird-song dialects: evolution of vocal (...)

Markosian presents an argument against certain theories of time based on the aesthetic value of music. He argues that turning a piece of music sideways in time destroys its intrinsic value, which would not be possible if the Spacetime Thesis were true. In this paper I show that sideways music poses no problems for any theory of time by demonstrating that turning a piece of music sideways does not affect its intrinsic value. I do this by appealing to spatial analogies (...)

    Reflector Dip Estimates Based on Seismic Waveform Curvature/Flexure Analysis.Haibin Di & Ghassan AlRegib - 2019 - Interpretation 7 (2):SC1-SC9.
Reliable estimation of the reflector dip serves as a fundamental and essential tool for subsurface structure interpretation from 3D seismic surveys. We have developed a new method for accurate dip estimation, which consists of two major components. First, the curvature/flexure concept is adapted from the traditional reflector geometry analysis to work for the seismic waveforms, denoted as the waveform curvature and waveform flexure, respectively. Physically, both of them are capable of measuring the most and least apparent variation of the local (...)

One Song, Many Works: A Pluralist Ontology of Rock.Daniel Burkett - 2015 - Contemporary Aesthetics 13.
A number of attempts have been made to construct a plausible ontology of rock music. Each of these ontologies identifies a single type of ontological entity as the “work” in rock music. Yet, all the suggestions advanced to date fail to capture some important considerations about how we engage with music of this tradition. This prompted Lee Brown to advocate a healthy skepticism of higher-order musical ontologies. I argue here that we should instead embrace a pluralist ontology of rock, an (...)

Computer aided modeling and simulation of nanomaterials can describe the correlation between the material’s microstructure and its macroscopic properties quantitatively. In this paper, we propose an integrated modeling, simulation, and visualization approach for designing nanomaterials. Firstly, a fast parametric modeling method for important nanomaterials such as graphene, nanotubes, and MOFs is proposed; secondly, the material model could be edited adaptively without affecting the validity of the model on the physical level; thirdly a preliminary calculation for nanomaterials’ energy is implemented based (...)

Fixed-Time Trajectory Tracking Control of Autonomous Surface Vehicle with Model Uncertainties and Disturbances.Jiawen Cui & Haibin Sun - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-10.
The issue of fixed-time trajectory tracking control for the autonomous surface vehicles system with model uncertainties and external disturbances is investigated in this paper. Particularly, convergence time does not depend on initial conditions. The major contributions include the following: An integral sliding mode controller via integral sliding mode surface is first proposed, which can ensure that the system states can follow the desired trajectory within a fixed time. Unknown external disturbances are absolutely estimated by means of designing a fixed-time disturbance (...)

Folk Song as Hybrid Art Form.David Atkinson - forthcoming - British Journal of Aesthetics.
A number of philosophers of music have proved resistant to the idea that song should be considered as a hybrid art that combines language and music. Separately, Levinson in his influential account of hybrid art forms does not admit folk song, even though he does allow nineteenth-century lieder into the hybrid category. Folk songs are sometimes treated as if they are anterior to and therefore ontologically distinct from the more complex songs of Western art music, or even of (...)

When Does Family Ownership Promote Proactive Environmental Strategy? The Role of the Firm’s Long-Term Orientation.Song Wang, Emma Su & Junsheng Dou - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (1):81-95.
This research proposes an explanation for the conflicting extant evidence about whether family ownership of a business promotes proactive environmental strategy. Based on insights drawn from strategic reference point theory, organizational identity theory, and the socioemotional wealth preservation perspective, we propose that family ownership has a moderated–mediated relationship with PES, with commitment as a moderator and long-term orientation as a mediator. A test using 454 China private firms with different levels of family ownership supports the hypotheses. This shows that PES (...)

That holobionts are units of selection squares poorly with the observation that microbes are often recruited from the environment, not passed down vertically from parent to offspring, as required for collective reproduction. The taxonomic makeup of a holobiont’s microbial community may vary over its lifetime and differ from that of conspecifics. In contrast, biochemical functions of the microbiota and contributions to host biology are more conserved, with taxonomically variable but functionally similar microbes recurring across generations and hosts. Drunk drivers and other culpably incapacitated wrongdoers are often taken to pose a problem for reasons-responsiveness accounts of moral responsibility. These accounts predicate moral responsibility upon an agent having the capacities to perceive and act upon moral reasons, and the culpably incapacitated wrongdoers lack exactly those capacities at the time of their wrongdoing. Many reasons-responsiveness advocates thus expand their account of responsibility to include a tracing condition: The culpably incapacitated wrongdoer is blameworthy despite his incapacitation precisely because he is responsible (...)

Listening to music can be an intensely moving experience. Many people love music in part because of its power to alter or amplify their moods, and turn to music for inspiration, comfort, or therapy. It is a puzzle, then, why many of us spend so much time listening to sad music. If music can influence our moods, and assuming that most people would prefer to be happy not sad, why would we choose to listen to sad music? I revisit the (...)
