The kind of group you want to belong to: Effects of group structure on group accuracy.Martin L. Jönsson, Ulrike Hahn & Erik J. Olsson - 2015 - Cognition 142 (C):191-204.
There has been much interest in group judgment and the so-called 'wisdom of crowds'. In many real world contexts, members of groups not only share a dependence on external sources of information, but they also communicate with one another, thus introducing correlations among their responses that can diminish collective accuracy. This has long been known, but it has-to date-not been examined to what extent different kinds of communication networks may give rise to systematically different effects on accuracy. We argue (...)

    How reticulated are species?James Mallet, Nora Besansky & Matthew W. Hahn - 2016 - Bioessays 38 (2):140-149.
Many groups of closely related species have reticulate phylogenies. Recent genomic analyses are showing this in many insects and vertebrates, as well as in microbes and plants. In microbes, lateral gene transfer is the dominant process that spoils strictly tree‐like phylogenies, but in multicellular eukaryotes hybridization and introgression among related species is probably more important. Because many species, including the ancestors of ancient major lineages, seem to evolve rapidly in adaptive radiations, some sexual compatibility may exist among them. Introgression (...)

Truth tracking performance of social networks: how connectivity and clustering can make groups less competent.Ulrike Hahn, Jens Ulrik Hansen & Erik J. Olsson - 2020 - Synthese 197 (4):1511-1541.
Our beliefs and opinions are shaped by others, making our social networks crucial in determining what we believe to be true. Sometimes this is for the good because our peers help us form a more accurate opinion. Sometimes it is for the worse because we are led astray. In this context, we address via agent-based computer simulations the extent to which patterns of connectivity within our social networks affect the likelihood that initially undecided agents in a network converge on a (...)

Informatics and the Foundations of Legal Reasoning.Zenon Bankowski, Ian White & Ulrike Hahn (eds.) - 1995 - Dordrecht, Netherland: Kluwer Academic Publishers.
Informatics and the Foundations of Legal Reasoning represents a close collaboration between a wide range of disciplines and countries. Fourteen papers, together with a long analytical introduction by the editors, were selected from the contributions of legal theorists, computer scientists, philosophers and logicians who were members of an International Working Group supported by the European Commission. The Group was mandated to work towards determining how far the law is amenable to formal modeling, and in what ways computers might assist legal (...)

    Rite et liturgie.Nicole Gabriel & Alois Hahn - 2005 - Hermes 43:49.

  8. Norm Conflicts and Conditionals.Niels Skovgaard-Olsen, David Kellen, Ulrike Hahn & Karl Christoph Klauer - 2019 - Psychological Review 126 (5):611-633.
Suppose that two competing norms, N1 and N2, can be identified such that a given person’s response can be interpreted as correct according to N1 but incorrect according to N2. Which of these two norms, if any, should one use to interpret such a response? In this paper we seek to address this fundamental problem by studying individual variation in the interpretation of conditionals by establishing individual profiles of the participants based on their case judgments and reflective attitudes. To investigate (...)

    The Philosophy of Roderick M. Chisholm. [REVIEW]Timm Triplett, Lewis Edwin Hahn & Roderick M. Chisholm - 2000 - Philosophical Review 109 (3):450.
In the intellectual autobiography that opens this book, Chisholm divides philosophers into “drones” and “commentators,” placing himself in the first group. As a drone, Chisholm proposed solutions to philosophical problems and asked his students and colleagues to try to refute him. He reports that they often did, sending him back to the drawing board. Chisholm’s wry self-description says much about his manner as well as his method. A more pretentious philosopher might have spoken of his dogged search for philosophical truth (...)

Reflections on the history of science.Roger Hahn - 1965 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 3 (2):235-242.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Notes and Discussions :REFLECTIONS ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE Every discipline worthy of a name deserves to be criticized periodically, asked to explain its objects and assess its march. The history of science is no exception. Indeed, criticism at this juncture should be all the more welcomed since the subjcct has now won its place in the curriculum of Anglo-Saxon educational institutions, particularly in the United States where Ph.D. (...)

In this essay I reflect on fear and cultural exhaustion and their effect on our language, as possible causes, among many others, of the rise of nationalist and chauvinist feeling across Europe today. By fear I mean the fear of not understanding and of not being understood by the other, which may affect us in various ways; by exhaustion I refer to our modern work life with its permanent accessibility and the uncontrolled flood of pictures and information we are exposed (...)

Gender equality in the work of local research ethics committees in Europe: a study of practice in five countries.C. J. Moerman, J. A. Haafkens, M. Soderstrom, E. Rasky, P. Maguire, U. Maschewsky-Schneider, M. Norstedt, D. Hahn, H. Reinerth & N. McKevitt - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (2):107-112.
Background: Funding organisations and research ethics committees should play a part in strengthening attention to gender equality in clinical research. In the research policy of European Union , funding measures have been taken to realise this, but such measures are lacking in the EU policy regarding RECs.Objective: To explore how RECs in Austria, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands and Sweden deal with gender equality issues by asking two questions: Do existing procedures promote representation of women and gender expertise in the committee? Mediated events in political communication: A case study on the German European Union Council Presidency 2007.Nicolas Schwendemann, Michaela Schmid, Patrick Roessler, Kathrin Mok & Julia Hahn - 2008 - Communications 33 (3):331-350.
This case study provides a multi-perspective view on the power of political events as a strategy to influence public opinion-building regarding the European Union and the European Idea. To achieve this purpose, it examines one prominent political issue of 2007, namely the German Presidency of the Council of the EU. Looking at three different groups of actors, the German Government, the media, and the audience, the public perception of events is analyzed according to their varying degree of mediatization. The (...)

The Hahn Embedding Theorem for a Class of Residuated Semigroups.Sándor Jenei - 2020 - Studia Logica 108 (6):1161-1206.
Hahn’s embedding theorem asserts that linearly ordered abelian groups embed in some lexicographic product of real groups. Hahn’s theorem is generalized to a class of residuated semigroups in this paper, namely, to odd involutive commutative residuated chains which possess only finitely many idempotent elements. To this end, the partial lexicographic product construction is introduced to construct new odd involutive commutative residuated lattices from a pair of odd involutive commutative residuated lattices, and a representation theorem for odd (...)

First-order theories of subgroups of divisible Hahn products.F. Lucas - 2003 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 121 (2-3):261-279.
Some first-order theories of divisible ℓ-groups are well known, for example the theory of the totally ordered ones and the theories of the projectable ones , Lattice-ordered Groups, Kluwer Academic Press, Dordrecht, 1989, pp. 41–79). In this paper we study some theories of nonprojectable divisible ℓ-groups, the simplest example of which is . We introduce a generalization of the projectability property . We prove that the class of r-projectable special-valued divisible ℓ-groups is an elementary class and (...)

Objektivität durch Asymmetrie: Die Identität der Ununterscheidbaren in relationalen Systemen.Markus Hahn - 2009 - De Gruyter.

Toleration, Reason, and Virtue.Hahn Hsu - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 50:257-268.
It is virtuous for individual and collective agents to be tolerant. However, toleration is difficult, both in practice and in conceptualization. Firstly, given that toleration can be understood in various ways (Walzer 1997, Forst 2007), it seems that to determine what is the proper conception of toleration would be controversially difficult. Here I shall suggest one particular conception of toleration is more suitable than others. This conception allows, as I shall explain, us to better understandthe difficulties of toleration. Thus, this (...)

The debate over environmental, health, and safety regulation has reached a new crescendo in the 104th Congress. So impassioned is the debate on occasion, and so high the feelings, that even the tools of regulatory analysis have become part of the combat. To some, the term cost-benefit analysis, for example, is virtually a swearword, a nefarious tool used by big business to undermine regulations aimed at benefiting the people at large. To others, it is the mechanism for achieving more effective regulation (...)
