  8. The case against implicit bias fatalism.Benedek Kurdi & Eric Mandelbaum - 2023 - Nature Reviews Psychology 1.
The standard associative account of implicit bias posits that the mind unavoidably mirrors the biased co-occurrences that are present in the environment. The resulting fatalistic view of implicit bias as inevitable and immutable is both scientifically unwarranted and societally counterproductive.

The associative theory of creativity states that creativity is associated with differences in the structure of semantic memory, whereas the executive theory of creativity emphasises the role of top-down control for creative thought. For a powerful test of these accounts, individual semantic memory structure was modelled with a novel method based on semantic relatedness judgements and different criteria for network filtering were compared. The executive account was supported by a correlation between creative ability and broad retrieval ability. The associative account (...)

What can the implicit social cognition literature teach us about implicit social cognition?Benedek Kurdi & Yarrow Dunham - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
We highlight several sets of findings from the past decade elucidating the relationship between implicit social cognition and real-world inequality: Studies focusing on practical ramifications of implicit social cognition in applied contexts, the relationship between implicit social cognition and consequential real-world outcomes at the level of individuals and geographic units, and convergence between individual-level and corpus-based measures of implicit bias.

Psychometrically sound instruments that assess temporal dynamics of creative abilities are limited. The Ambulatory Battery of Creativity is designed to assess creative ideation performance multiple times in everyday life and was proven to capture the intra-individual dynamic of creative abilities reliably and validly. The present ambulatory study aimed to replicate and extend the psychometric evidence of the novel ABC. Sixty-nine participants worked on the ABC during a 5-day ambulatory assessment protocol. Each day, participants completed six randomly presented items of the (...)

“What is the structure of thought?” is as central a question as any in cognitive science. A classic answer to this question has appealed to a Language of Thought (LoT). We point to emerging research from disparate branches of the field that supports the LoT hypothesis, but also uncovers diversity in LoTs across cognitive systems, stages of development, and species. Our letter formulates open research questions for cognitive science concerning the varieties of rules and representations that underwrite various LoT-based systems (...)

“Case Neisser”: Experimental Design, the Beginnings of Immunology, and Informed Consent.Thomas G. Benedek - 2014 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 57 (2):249-267.
As etiologic concepts of diseases gradually changed from humoral to microbial in the 19th century, syphilis presented particularly great challenges to doctors and scientists. Was “syphilis” merely a synonym for “venereal disease,” and did all manifestations attributed to it have the same cause? The discovery in 1879 of the gonococcus by Albert L. Neisser , and of the cause of chancroid, or soft chancre, in 1890 by Augusto Ducrey , established that venereal disease and syphilis were not synonymous, but syphilis (...)

How To Do Things With Pictures: Skill, Practice, Performance.András Benedek & Kristof Nyiri (eds.) - 2013 - Peter Lang Edition.
Pictorial meaning involves not just resemblance, but also pictorial skills, pictorial acts, practices, and performance. Especially in the classroom setting, at all levels of education, it is essential to realize that teaching with pictures and learning through pictures is a practical enterprise where thinking is embedded in doing. Promoting visual learning means to be a visionary, and to take on an enormous educational challenge. But while adaptation and innovation are inevitable in a world where technological changes are rapidly and radically (...)

Off to market: but which one? Understanding the participation of small-scale farmers in short food supply chains—a Hungarian case study.Zsófia Benedek, Imre Fertő & Adrienn Molnár - 2018 - Agriculture and Human Values 35 (2):383-398.
The research described in this paper was designed to identify the factors that influence the importance small-scale farmers place on different marketing channels of short food supply chains. The focus concerns two entirely different types of market that are present in the bigger cities in Hungary: ‘conventional’ markets where there are no restrictions on locality but the farmer-market relationship is based on binding contracts, and newly-emergent farmers’ markets at which only local growers can sell ad hoc, using their own portable (...)

    Vaccination-Induced Syphilis and the Hübner Malpractice Litigation.Thomas G. Benedek - 2012 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 55 (1):92-113.
The ability to effectively prevent smallpox was the greatest medical accomplishment of the first half of the 19th century. From 1838 to 1840, half a century after vaccination was introduced but before it became mandatory in England, data about the general population of England and Wales recorded 70 deaths per million from smallpox; only 180, 900 vaccinations were recorded. In London alone from 1848 to 1852, there were 4, 858 youthful deaths from smallpox, 67% of which occurred during the first (...)

In this manuscript, we define and discuss a new type of logical puzzles. These puzzles are based on the simplest truth-teller and liar puzzles. Graphs are used to represent graphically the puzzles. these logical puzzles contain three types of people. Strong Truth-tellers who can say only true statements, Strong Liars who can make only false statements and Weak Crazy people who must make at least one self-contradicting statement if he/she says anything. Self-contradicting statements are related to the Liar paradox, such (...)

The Iconic Turn in Education.Kristof Nyiri & Andras Benedek (eds.) - 2012 - Peter Lang.
Some twenty years after the term <I>iconic turn has been coined, and with a deluge of digital images, videos and animations surrounding, indeed invading, the learning environment, it appears that educational science, and the everyday practice of education, still very much labour under the impact of the past dominance of alphabetic literacy. But while educators clearly need to retain a measure of conservatism, maintain an acute sense for the logic of the written text and preserve the ability to handle extended (...)

The owners assessment of everyday dog memory: A questionnaire study.Peter Pongracz, Veronika Benedek, Sybille Enz & Adam Miklosi - 2012 - Interaction Studies 13 (3):386-407.
In a questionnaire study we surveyed the owners of 113 companion dogs. Owners had to mark on a four-grade scale how long their dog remembered particular memory items (persons, other animals, events, objects). Additionally we collected descriptive data on the demographical characteristics of the dog and the keeping conditions.A principal component analysis on the memory items resulted in five components. From these, two were connected to people (`Family' and `Intruders'), three other components contained individual items of memory of objects and (...)

How Reliably Do Eye Parameters Indicate Internal Versus External Attentional Focus?Sonja Annerer-Walcher, Simon M. Ceh, Felix Putze, Marvin Kampen, Christof Körner & Mathias Benedek - 2021 - Cognitive Science 45 (4):e12977.
Eye behavior is increasingly used as an indicator of internal versus external focus of attention both in research and application. However, available findings are partly inconsistent, which might be attributed to the different nature of the employed types of internal and external cognition tasks. The present study, therefore, investigated how consistently different eye parameters respond to internal versus external attentional focus across three task modalities: numerical, verbal, and visuo‐spatial. Three eye parameters robustly differentiated between internal and external attentional focus across (...)

The Father of Ethology and the Foster Mother of Ducks: Konrad Lorenz as Expert on Motherhood.Marga Vicedo - 2009 - Isis 100 (2):263-291.
Konrad Lorenz's popularity in the United States has to be understood in the context of social concern about the mother‐infant dyad after World War II. Child analysts David Levy, René Spitz, Margarethe Ribble, Therese Benedek, and John Bowlby argued that many psychopathologies were caused by a disruption in the mother‐infant bond. Lorenz extended his work on imprinting to humans and argued that maternal care was also instinctual. The conjunction of psychoanalysis and ethology helped shore up the view that the (...)
