Horkheimer/Adornos im kalifornischen Exil verfasste Dialektik der Aufklärung untersucht das Scheitern menschlicher Befreiung und die Errichtung neuer Herrschaftsformen. Obgleich ein Schlüsseltext der philosophischen Zeitdiagnose, gab es bislang keinen Kommentar zu ihr. Der hier vorgelegte kooperative Kommentar geht der Dialektik der Aufklärung in zwei Durchgängen nach. Ein erster Durchgang kommentiert die einzelnen Abschnitte des Buches; ein zweiter Durchgang verfolgt Koordinaten seines theoretischen Horizonts. Abschließend gelangt die Wirkungsgeschichte des Textes zur Darstellung. Ein Gravitationstext der kritischen Theorie unserer Zeit findet damit erstmals eine (...) kommentierende Auslegung. (shrink)

Den Marxismus zu beerben heißt, ihn als tot und als relevant zu begreifen. Beides ist in Marxens Doppelthese enthalten, die Philosophie könne sich nicht verwirklichen ohne die Aufhebung des Proletariats, und das Proletariat könne sich nicht aufheben ohne die Verwirklichung der Philosophie. Die ungebrochene Relevanz dieser These besteht darin, die Unvernunft des Wirklichen zum inneren Problem der Philosophie werden zu lassen. Indem sie die Frage nach ihrer Verwirklichung aufrechterhält, entmächtigt sie das selbstzufriedene Denken.

Nisenbaum offers an account of philosophical evolution in the wake of Kant’s critical revolution. She intends “to show that the development of post-Kantian German Idealism is propelled by the different interpretations, appropriations, and radicalizations of the Kantian view that the representation of the unconditioned by finite beings is a topic of practical, not theoretical, philosophy”. Geistesgeschichte was a serious response to a modal-quantitative problem in Classical German Philosophy. In an attempt at solving the problem, it glorified the historically given as spirit, and for this reason became ideology. Nonetheless, Geistesgeschichte is heir to the promise that history, as the history of the spirit, may yet rise to transcend what is given.

The paper considers the possibilities of conceiving theology as a provocation of philosophy. It first discusses the relation between faith and knowledge, and argues then that the provocative power of theology can be best explained through its relation to the philosophy of logical form. For theology contests the philosophy of logical form in two respects. It rejects the account of existence as given in terms of quantifiers, and it rejects the account of predication as given in terms of mathematical functions. (...)
