Dit boek biedt een kritische inleiding in de godsdienstfilosofie, aan de hand van een confrontatie tussen enerzijds G.W.F. Hegels filosofie van de monotheïstische religies en anderzijds godsdienstwetenschappelijke inzichten in en vanuit de godsdiensten zelf. Het doel is te komen tot een wijsgerige verheldering van wat deze religies kenmerkt. Wat kan een filosofische benadering van de verschillende godsdiensten, zoals die van Hegel, bijdragen aan een beter begrip ervan? Hoe zou de godsdienstfilosofie een rol kunnen spelen in het actuele debat (...) over religie, en de verhouding daarvan tot de grondslagen van recht en politiek? De manier waarop we over God denken en dus hoe we geloven, beïnvloedt onze moraal en ons recht, de wetten die we maken en de wijze waarop we die toepassen. Hegel had veel op met het christendom. In zijn ogen vormde het christelijk geloof ten opzichte van andere, eerdere godsdiensten een vervolmaking en een voltooiing van de religie. Filosofisch bezien is het christendom de religie van vrijheid en van verzoening van God en de mens met elkaar. Alle godsdiensten die voorafgingen aan het christendom, beschouwt hij als beperkter en eenzijdiger: de ‘ware geest’ is daarin nog onvoldoende ontwikkeld. Deze hoogst controversiële claim wordt in dit boek aan een nader, kritisch onderzoek onderworpen. (shrink)

In topical philosophy of religion the word 'given' plays an important role. However the meaning of this word is ambiguous. The word refers not only to the factual reality (datum) but also to what is given as a gift to someone (donum). This ambiguity leads toan unclear mixture of philosophical and religious positions. Therefore an analysis of such mixture is necessary. The main question of this analysis is how faith and religion on the one hand, and ontology and reason on (...) the other hand, influence each other? Isn'tit so that in the religious domain nobody can be convinced with and by rational means? In the first section, the question on the reality of the ultimate meaning as the momentfrom where man is motivated to lead his life, is explored. In the second section the idea is developed that philosophical insights are meaningful with regard to religious meaning only if they are referred back to religious faith. In the third section the question posited is whether philosophical reflection does not loose its original motivationalcontext if it isn't referred back to its original point of departure. The author wishes to understand the simultaneousness of the influence excerted and the irritation aroused by Wittgenstein’s philosophy of religion. In his first section he states that Wittgenstein’s thinking in this domain comes down to the following central idea: religious belief differs strongly from empirical convictions. From the fact that this central idea was already defended by Kierkegaard and seems to enjoy a respectable status in academical circles, arises the question why Wittgenstein’s presentation of it evokes such vehement reactions. Sec. (...) 2 therefore focusses on defects in the interpretation of Wittgenstein by his advocates and opponents. Is religion, according to Wittgenstein, immune against criticism? And: Doesn’t a descriptive philosophy of religion contain some prescriptive elements? Mulhall’s affirmative answer to the last question gives him the surmise that the ties between the Wittgensteinian practice of philosophy and religious practices are stronger than may appear at first glance. Sec. 3 sees in both these practices a kind of remedies for those situations in which human beings find it difficult to accept their finitude. (shrink)

Wittgenstein wordt wel beschouwd als een tegenstander van het ‘cognitivisme’ in de godsdienstfilosofie. Ik probeer hier aan te tonen dat Wittgenstein ook een tegenwicht biedt tegen hedendaagse benaderingen in de cultuurwetenschappen. De hedendaagse culturele antropologie is gestoeld op een combinatie van evolutionaire en cognitieve psychologie. ‘Betekenis’ wordt daarin opgevat als een cognitief proces dat zijn belichaming vindt in ons brein, en daarmee privé is. Wittgenstein wijst echter op het publieke karakter van betekenis, en op een andere notie van belichaming, (...) die te maken heeft met dat publieke karakter alsook met betekenis als relevantie. Iedereen die in Wittgensteins werk op zoek gaat naar een omvattende godsdienstfilosofie komt bedrogen uit. Het thema staat niet in het centrum van zijn filosofische aandacht. Toch had Wittgenstein een onmiskenbare interesse in religie en religieus geloof, en heeft hij zich daarover zowel in zijn vroege als in zijn latere filosofie uitgesproken. Een van de meest opwindende ontwikkelingen in de Engelstalig filosofische wereld van de laatste decennia is vermoedelijk wel de herleving van de godsdienstfilosofie. Deze leek begraven omdat de godsdienst zelf, m.n. het Christendom, begraven leek onder een vracht van beschuldigingen, zoals de neopositivistische negatie van de zinnigheid van godsdienstige taal; of Sartre’s stelling dat de godsdienst de mens van zijn authenticiteit berooft; of de Freudiaanse gedachte dat godsdienst een neurose is; of de Marxistische mening dat de godsdienst de mens (...) vervreemdt van de maatschappelijke erkelijkheid. Voorzover godsdienstfilosofie — laten we zeggen tot in de zestiger jaren — mogelijk leek en werkelijkheid was, dan voornamelijk als godsdienstkritiek. (shrink)

Die verbreitete Meinung, boses Tun erfordere eine bose Absicht, ist nach Ingolf U. Dalferth eine fragwurdige Ubervereinfachung. Der Primat des Bosen liegt nicht im Wollen, sondern in der Erfahrung des Bosen, im Widerfahrnis des Ublen. Was zahlt, ist das Leiden der Betroffenen. Aber auch dieser Ansatz kann zu abwegigen Ubervereinfachungen fuhren, wenn Leiden mit Bosem gleichgesetzt wird. An diesem Punkt beginnen die Uberlegungen der Studie. Fur Dalferth ist die entscheidende Frage, ob Leiden in jedem Fall als Boses verstanden werden muss. (...) Seine Antwort ist theologisch und ethisch differenziert und veranschaulicht in praziser Sprache die zu Grunde liegenden aktuellen Lebensphanomene an vielen gut verstandlichen Beispielen. Am Ende des Bandes werden Deutungs- und Bewaltigungsstrategien von Leiden und Bosem diskutiert, die den unverzichtbaren Beitrag von christlichem Glauben und Religion zum Umgang mit Leiden und Bosem aufzeigen und auch fur Nichtchristen verstehbar machen. Die Studie ist wahrend des Aufenthalts von Dalferth am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin entstanden und in ihrer lebenspraktischen Ausrichtung ein hoch zu schatzender Gewinn fur alle Leserinnen und Leser.
