Is there a leftwing anti-populism? Meet Slavoj Žižek.Giorgos Venizelos, Antonis Galanopoulos & Thomás Zicman de Barros - 2019 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 13 (3).
In October 2018, Slavoj Žižek published a two-part contribution titled ‘Should the Left’s answer to rightist populism be really a ‘‘me too’’?’. In this text, Žižek reproduced his diachronic skepticism on populism as a fruitful strategy for the Left. In a critical vein, we believe that Žižek’s latest interventions join - unconsciously or not - an avalanche of anti-populist discourses that usually emanate from elitist politicians and journalists, and reproduce a moralist, alarmist stance against populism. As a consequence, anti-populist elitism (...)

The survival of curaxins in the cancer arena.Giorgos Theocharous, Angelos Papaspyropoulos & Vassilis Gorgoulis - 2023 - Bioessays 45 (9):2300112.
Graphical AbstractWith DNA damage being a primary anti-cancertarget, a need has arisen for the development of an approach that is a harmlessfor normal tissues but allows for cancer cell-specific cytotoxicity. Previous researchfrom K. Gurova's suggests that small compounds, namely curaxins that bind theDNA can cause chromatin instability and cell death in a cancer cell-specificmanner. In this brief perspective commentary, we investigate how the scientificcommunity has further developed this anti-cancer approach.

    The Mythological Exemplum in Vergil’s “Eclogues”.Giorgos C. Paraskeviotis - 2014 - Hermes 142 (4):418-430.
This paper is concerned with the mythological exemplum in Vergil’s “Eclogues”, examining those passages where certain legendary characters are used as significant mythological exempla (i. e. Ecl. 2.19-27, 4.31-36, 4.53-59, 6.27-30 and 8.69-71). These exempla whose subject is mostly related to music and song, are used to serve Vergil’s literary goals in the passages where they are found (i. e. literary function); but, most significantly they are closely associated with poetry and poetics, symbolising either the epic or pastoral genre or (...)

    Equality of When?Giorgos Galanis & Roberto Veneziani - 2017 - Oeconomia 7:25-59.
This paper analyses the temporal unit of egalitarian concern. In the intertemporal context, the differences between egalitarian views can be appreciated not only in inequality analysis but also as regards the ideal egalitarian distribution to be established. In this paper, three intergenerational egalitarian principles (Complete Lives Egalitarianism, Corresponding Segments Egalitarianism and Simultaneous Segments Egalitarianism) are analysed and CSE is argued to be the appropriate egalitarian benchmark. The relations between the three principles and other moral ideals, namely maximin and utilitarianism, are (...)

Behavioural utilitarianism and distributive justice.Giorgos Galanis & Roberto Veneziani - 2022 - Economics Letters 215:110488.
What are the distributive implications of utilitarianism? Is it compatible with a concern for equality, as many utilitarians have argued? We analyse these questions in the context of a pure allocation problem. We consider an infinitely-lived economy and, drawing on the behavioural literature, assume that individuals have reference-dependent preferences: agents’ utility is a function of current consumption and a reference point which captures consumption habits, or the agents’ upbringing. Assuming a history of inequalities in consumption, we show that the utilitarian (...)

  12. Hannah Arendt on the Relation between Morality and Plurality.Giorgos Papaoikonomou - 2015 - Dialogue and Universalism 25 (2):79-91.
In this article, we examine, in the light of Arendt s categories, the fundamental structure of traditional claims on moral life. In other words, we evaluate the spirit in which traditional morality relates to the human world, especially, to the human condition of plurality. In this way, we shall be led to a perceptive reading of Arendt s groundbreaking view on morality and its borderline possibility of assuming a paradoxically significant role in the worldly affairs.

The Sphinx and the She-Wolf: Some Remarks on Aetolian Politics after the Antiochian War.Giorgos S. Mitropoulos - 2019 - Klio 101 (1):77-106.
Summary This article aims to examine the turbulent course of the Aetolian League in the confused years after the Antiochian War up until 160/159, when its leader at the time, Lykiskos, passed away. Military defeats, political developments and economic problems will be studied together in order to form an accurate interpretation of the internal strife inside the Koinon. In addition, the factor of Rome also needs to be taken into consideration, as the new power seems to have adopted a cautious (...)

Academic dishonesty among Greek University students from different disciplines: a latent profile analysis of cheating perceptions and academic self-handicapping.Constantinos M. Kokkinos, Nafsika Antoniadou & Ioanna Voulgaridou - forthcoming - Ethics and Behavior.
This study investigated the associations between academic dishonesty, perceptions toward cheating and academic self-handicapping in 572 Greek University students using an online anonymous questionnaire. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to form subgroups of students based on academic dishonesty – related constructs. The results showed that academic dishonesty was higher in males and among Sciences and Economics/ICT majors, and that it was associated with students’ perceptions and a pattern of dysfunctional academic behavior. Moreover, students majoring in Science and Economics/ICT reported (...)

This article attempts to establish analogies between the recent introduction into architectural thought of notions such as the human body movement, events and scenarios, and the development of navigation and interaction principles and conventions in the computer world. The study of the human–computer interface contributes to an understanding of the major role of the computer screen as a point of convergence of different representational forms, and the emergence of new ones belonging to the digital culture. The compositional structure of interactive (...)

    On the $$\gamma $$-core of asymmetric aggregative games.Giorgos Stamatopoulos - 2020 - Theory and Decision 88 (4):493-504.
This paper analyzes the core of cooperative games generated by asymmetric aggregative normal-form games, i.e., games where the payoff of each player depends on his strategy and the sum of the strategies of all players. We assume that each coalition calculates its worth presuming that the outside players stand alone and select individually best strategies. We show that under some mild monotonicity assumptions on payoffs, the resulting cooperative game is balanced and has a non-empty core. Our paper thus offers an (...)

Populism, anti-populism and crisis.Yannis Stavrakakis, Giorgos Katsambekis, Alexandros Kioupkiolis, Nikos Nikisianis & Thomas Siomos - 2018 - Contemporary Political Theory 17 (1):4-27.
This article focuses on two issues involved in the formation and political trajectory of populist representations within political antagonism. First, it explores the role of crisis in the articulation of populist discourse. This problematic is far from new within theories of populism but has recently taken a new turn. We thus purport to reconsider the way populism and crisis are related, mapping the different modalities this relation can take and advancing further their theorization from the point of view of a (...)

The ethical and policy implications of e-health and telemedicine: an ageing-focused review.Oonagh Thompson, Giorgos Koumanakos & Karim Hadjri - 2012 - Clinical Ethics 7 (4):147-156.
E-health and telemedicine programmes and systems offer much potential for supporting the health and wellbeing of older people, and are set to be promoted within the changing health-care landscape. This evolving model of technology-centred health care raises a number of ethical and regulatory issues, such as privacy, data protection, online professional practice, consent, accessibility and risk of confinement. Through this review we sought to analyse the European debate on the ethical and policy implications of e-health and telemedicine by identifying key (...)

Previous studies have offered indications that the way pre-adolescents structure their perceptions of their teacher’s interaction in terms of Agency and Communion differs from adolescents. The purpose of this study was to delineate previous findings by thoroughly examining the structure of pre-adolescents’ perceptions of their teacher’s interpersonal behaviour, and by investigating the extent to which this structure relates to pre-adolescents’ learning outcomes. A mixed methods research design was implemented including a qualitative instrument adaptation procedure followed by a quantitative large-scale administration. (...)

Kassianos, Giorgos Georgiou, Electra P. Papaconstantinou, Angeliki Detzortzi & Rob Horne - 2017 - Frontiers in Psychology 8:223094.
Background: Patients prescribed with medication that treats mental health conditions benefit the most compared to those prescribed with other types of medication. However, they are also the most difficult to adhere. The development of mobile health (mHealth) applications (‘apps’) to help patients monitor their adherence is fast growing but with limited evidence on their efficacy. There is no evidence on the content of these apps for patients taking psychotropic medication. The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the (...)

The Impact of Perceived Greenwashing on Customer Satisfaction and the Contingent Role of Capability Reputation.Ioannis Ioannou, George Kassinis & Giorgos Papagiannakis - 2023 - Journal of Business Ethics 185 (2):333-347.
We investigate the impact of perceived greenwashing on customer satisfaction. Unlike prior research that largely examines customer perceptions associated with irresponsible behavior, we focus on cases where firms overcommit and/or do not deliver on promised socially responsible actions. We theorize that this type of greenwashing is associated with lower customer satisfaction because customers perceive greenwashing through the lens of corporate hypocrisy. Using data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for U.S. companies during the period 2008–2016, we document a negative (...)

Prior research has investigated the recruitment of inhibition in the use of science/mathematics concepts in tasks that require the rejection of a conflicting, nonscientific initial concept. The present research examines if inhibition is the only EF skill recruited in such tasks and investigates whether shifting is also involved. It also investigates whether inhibition and/or shifting are recruited in tasks in which the use of science/mathematics concepts does not require the rejection of an initial concept, or which require only the use (...)

The quest for real democracy is one of the components of sustainable degrowth. But the incipient debate on democracy and degrowth suffers from general definitions and limited connections to political philosophy and democracy theory. This article offers a critical review of democracy theory within the degrowth literature, taking as its focal point a relevant debate between Serge Latouche and Takis Fotopoulos. We argue that the core of their contention can be traced back to the relationship between the concepts of democracy (...)

The planetary boundaries concept has profoundly changed the vocabulary and representation of global environmental issues. The article starts by highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of planetary boundaries from a social science perspective. It is argued that the growth imperative of capitalist economies, as well as other particular characteristics detailed below, are the main drivers of the ecological crisis and exacerbated trends already underway. Further, the planetary boundaries framework can support interpretations that do not solely emphasize technocratic operational approaches and costs, (...)

The notion of societal boundaries aims to enhance the debate on planetary boundaries. The focus is on capitalist societies as a heuristic for discussing the expansionary dynamics, power relations, and lock-ins of modern societies that impel highly unsustainable societal relations with nature. While formulating societal boundaries implies a controversial process – based on normative judgments, ethical concerns, and socio-political struggles – it has the potential to offer guidelines for a just, social-ecological transformation.
