Filosofia interculturale. Piccola rapsodia concettuale a tre voci.Giuseppe Cacciatore, D., Giuseppe Anna & Rosario Diana - 2014 - Research Trends in Humanities Education & Philosophy 1:11-15.
Diana – (...)

On the Correlativistic Construction of the Other. For an Analytical Anti-Spectacular Interculturalism: Nicolai Hartmann, György Lukács and Guy Debord.Giuseppe D’Anna - 2011 - Cultura 8 (2):51-61.
In this paper I would like to demonstrate that the “society of spectacle” notably influences our idea of the other and our intercultural thought and practice. In this way the imagination is not a free creative capability of a human being, but a political and social instrument of power of the society of spectacle.

This paper reports the framework, method and main findings of an analysis of cultural milieus in 4 European countries. The analysis is based on a questionnaire applied to a sample built through a two-step procedure of post-hoc random selection from a broader dataset based on an online survey. Responses to the questionnaire were subjected to multidimensional analysis-a combination of Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Cluster Analysis. We identified 5 symbolic universes, that correspond to basic, embodied, affect-laden, generalized worldviews. People in this (...)

Within a general approach that implies the closely related survey of neurosciences and philosophical thought, the essays collected in the volume develop two main lines of research. The first one, thanks to the contributions of scientists and psychologists , psychoanalysists and bioengineers , allows to fix the attention on the neurobiological, psychological, psychoanalytical and physical remembering. The second one, more specifically philosophical, is declined in three different approaches. the first - with essays by Stefania Achella, Giuseppe D'Anna and Rosario (...)

Libertarian Paternalism and Health Care Policy: A Deliberative Proposal. [REVIEW]Giuseppe Schiavone, Gabriele De Anna, Matteo Mameli, Vincenzo Rebba & Giovanni Boniolo - 2014 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 17 (1):103-113.
Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler have been arguing for what they named libertarian paternalism (henceforth LP). Their proposal generated extensive debate as to how and whether LP might lead down a full-blown paternalistic slippery slope. LP has the indubitable merit of having hardwired the best of the empirical psychological and sociological evidence into public and private policy making. It is unclear, though, to what extent the implementation of policies so constructed could enhance the capability for the exercise of an autonomous (...)

    Sul Testo Della Passio Petri Et Pauli.Alberto D’Anna - 2017 - Augustinianum 57 (1):123-144.
In anticipation of a new edition of the Passio apostolorum Petri et Pauli, this article analyzes the recensio conducted by Lipsius for his edition of 1891. The review of the main variants highlighted by the editor reverses his thesis: they depend on innovations by reduction, not by interpolation. Such innovations could perhaps depend on early medieval liturgical use of the work. With regard to the methodology, the comparison with the Greek tradition of the work, as an external criterion of evaluation, (...)

Learning to Manipulate and Categorize in Human and Artificial Agents.Giuseppe Morlino, Claudia Gianelli, Anna M. Borghi & Stefano Nolfi - 2015 - Cognitive Science 39 (1):39-64.
This study investigates the acquisition of integrated object manipulation and categorization abilities through a series of experiments in which human adults and artificial agents were asked to learn to manipulate two-dimensional objects that varied in shape, color, weight, and color intensity. The analysis of the obtained results and the comparison of the behavior displayed by human and artificial agents allowed us to identify the key role played by features affecting the agent/environment interaction, the relation between category and action development, and (...)

Quality of Life Reach in Medical Care Alcance da qualidade de vida no atendimento médico The term quality of life has increasingly widespread use in biomedical practice, especially in end-of-life situations. Experience shows that the expression is often used with very different —and sometimes conflicting— scopes. The present article presents the results of a literature review that show diverse positions, while delimitating the subject. The analysis compares the terms “quality of life,” “human dignity,” and “value of human life.” Para citar (...)

Obsessive–compulsive disorder is a debilitating mental health disorder that can easily become a treatment-resistant condition. Although effective therapies exist, only about half of the patients seem to benefit from them when we consider treatment refusal, dropout rates, and residual symptoms. Thus, providing effective augmentation to standard therapies could improve existing treatments. Group compassion-focused interventions have shown promise for reducing depression, anxiety, and avoidance related to various clinical problems, but this approach has never been evaluated for OCD individuals. However, cultivating compassion (...)

There is wide support in logic, philosophy, and psychology for the hypothesis that the probability of the indicative conditional of natural language, P(if A then B), is the conditional probability of B given A, P(B|A). We identify a conditional which is such that P(if A then B)=P(B|A) with de Finetti's conditional event, B|A. An objection to making this identification in the past was that it appeared unclear how to form compounds and iterations of conditional events. In this paper, we illustrate (...)

    Topologies and Free Constructions.Anna Bucalo & Giuseppe Rosolini - 2013 - Logic and Logical Philosophy 22 (3):327-346.
The standard presentation of topological spaces relies heavily on (naïve) set theory: a topology consists of a set of subsets of a set (of points). And many of the high-level tools of set theory are required to achieve just the basic results about topological spaces. Concentrating on the mathematical structures, category theory offers the possibility to look synthetically at the structure of continuous transformations between topological spaces addressing specifically how the fundamental notions of point and open come about. As a (...)

We analyse the category-theoretical structures involved with the notion of continuity within the framework of formal topology. We compare the category of basic pairs to other categories of “spaces” by means of canonically determined functors and show how the definition of continuity is determined in a certain, canonical sense. Finally, we prove a standard adjunction between the algebraic approach to spaces and the category of topological spaces.

Artificial intelligence is nowadays a reality. Setting rules on the potential outcomes of intelligent machines, so that no surprise can be expected by humans from the behavior of those machines, is becoming a priority for policy makers. In its recent Communication “Artificial Intelligence for Europe”, for instance, the European Commission identifies the distinguishing trait of an intelligent machine in the presence of “_a certain degree of autonomy_” in decision making, in the light of the context. The crucial issue to be (...)

Recent increases in the volume and diversity of life science data and information and an increasing emphasis on data sharing and interoperability have resulted in the creation of a large number of biological ontologies, including the Cell Ontology (CL), designed to provide a standardized representation of cell types for data annotation. Ontologies have been shown to have significant benefits for computational analyses of large data sets and for automated reasoning applications, leading to organized attempts to improve the structure and formal (...)
