    Degrowth, Democracy and Autonomy.Viviana Asara, Emanuele Profumi & Giorgos Kallis - 2013 - Environmental Values 22 (2):217-239.
The quest for real democracy is one of the components of sustainable degrowth. But the incipient debate on democracy and degrowth suffers from general definitions and limited connections to political philosophy and democracy theory. This article offers a critical review of democracy theory within the degrowth literature, taking as its focal point a relevant debate between Serge Latouche and Takis Fotopoulos. We argue that the core of their contention can be traced back to the relationship between the concepts of democracy (...)

  8. Winning or Losing the West: The Photographic Act.Kalli Paakspuu - 2007 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 27 (1):48-58.
The visual public record of the early West represents a site of national, continental, hemispheric, and global configurations of territory, power, and imagination. The early photograph reproduces the contradictory encounters between industry, settlers, and Indigenous communities as a particular future is envisioned and contested. The transformative value of a photograph was quickly recognized for nation building and soon served a political purpose as its uses expanded from surveying lands to promoting population growth and tourism and to artistic expression. The early (...)

The Sphinx and the She-Wolf: Some Remarks on Aetolian Politics After the Antiochian War.Giorgos S. Mitropoulos - 2019 - Klio 101 (1):77-106.
Summary This article aims to examine the turbulent course of the Aetolian League in the confused years after the Antiochian War up until 160/159, when its leader at the time, Lykiskos, passed away. Military defeats, political developments and economic problems will be studied together in order to form an accurate interpretation of the internal strife inside the Koinon. In addition, the factor of Rome also needs to be taken into consideration, as the new power seems to have adopted a cautious (...)

In this article, we examine, in the light of Arendt s categories, the fundamental structure of traditional claims on moral life. In other words, we evaluate the spirit in which traditional morality relates to the human world, especially, to the human condition of plurality. In this way, we shall be led to a perceptive reading of Arendt s groundbreaking view on morality and its borderline possibility of assuming a paradoxically significant role in the worldly affairs.

Incriminatory Utopias: Utopian Visions Creating Scapegoats.Kalli Drousioti & Marianna Papastephanou - forthcoming - Thesis Eleven:072551362210984.
Many utopian visions operate by scapegoating an Otherness. They blame an ‘enemy’ for an unbearable, dystopian current reality, holding the ‘enemy’ responsible for it or for obstructing the passage to a desired, new reality. Then they exclude this ‘enemy’. Despite the renewed interest in utopias, such utopian frames remain theoretically neglected or, worse, they are considered typical of the logical structure of utopianism. This paper aims to show that this issue merits a different political-philosophical attention. We begin with operations of (...)

    Ethnic/National Identity Incrimination in and Through Social Constructionism.Kalli Drousioti - 2018 - The European Legacy 24 (2):181-201.
ABSTRACTSocial constructionism, and Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory in particular, are well-known for their anti-essentialist understanding of identity. Hence these discourses have theoretically been utilized for understanding social identity construction and for deconstructing identities. However, I claim that social constructionism and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory may have the as yet non-theorized operation of detecting and combating wholesale indictments of identities. This operation helps us diagnose how ethnic identity and affect become incriminated as supposedly inextricably intertwined with racism, (...)

Collective Identities Beyond Homogenisation: Implications for Justice and Education.Kalli Drousioti - 2022 - Ethics and Education 17 (3):294-310.
ABSTRACT In this article, I highlight what Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s conceptualisation of the plurality within identities implies for justice and education. Laclau and Mouffe theorise the plurality of identities by framing and understanding identities within the wider theoretical context of discourse analysis and radical Democracy. I argue that the significance of this specific theorisation of the plurality within identities for justice and education has not yet been tackled by the related educational-philosophical scholarship, not even by that which focuses (...)

Is There a Leftwing Anti-Populism? Meet Slavoj Žižek.Giorgos Venizelos, Antonis Galanopoulos & Thomás Zicman de Barros - 2019 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 13 (3).
In October 2018, Slavoj Žižek published a two-part contribution titled ‘Should the Left’s answer to rightist populism be really a ‘‘me too’’?’. In this text, Žižek reproduced his diachronic skepticism on populism as a fruitful strategy for the Left. In a critical vein, we believe that Žižek’s latest interventions join - unconsciously or not - an avalanche of anti-populist discourses that usually emanate from elitist politicians and journalists, and reproduce a moralist, alarmist stance against populism. As a consequence, anti-populist elitism (...)

    On the $$\gamma $$-Core of Asymmetric Aggregative Games.Giorgos Stamatopoulos - 2020 - Theory and Decision 88 (4):493-504.
This paper analyzes the core of cooperative games generated by asymmetric aggregative normal-form games, i.e., games where the payoff of each player depends on his strategy and the sum of the strategies of all players. We assume that each coalition calculates its worth presuming that the outside players stand alone and select individually best strategies. We show that under some mild monotonicity assumptions on payoffs, the resulting cooperative game is balanced and has a non-empty core. Our paper thus offers an (...)

The Ethical and Policy Implications of E-Health and Telemedicine: An Ageing-Focused Review.Oonagh Thompson, Giorgos Koumanakos & Karim Hadjri - 2012 - Clinical Ethics 7 (4):147-156.
E-health and telemedicine programmes and systems offer much potential for supporting the health and wellbeing of older people, and are set to be promoted within the changing health-care landscape. This evolving model of technology-centred health care raises a number of ethical and regulatory issues, such as privacy, data protection, online professional practice, consent, accessibility and risk of confinement. Through this review we sought to analyse the European debate on the ethical and policy implications of e-health and telemedicine by identifying key (...)

Populism, Anti-Populism and Crisis.Yannis Stavrakakis, Giorgos Katsambekis, Alexandros Kioupkiolis, Nikos Nikisianis & Thomas Siomos - 2018 - Contemporary Political Theory 17 (1):4-27.
This article focuses on two issues involved in the formation and political trajectory of populist representations within political antagonism. First, it explores the role of crisis in the articulation of populist discourse. This problematic is far from new within theories of populism but has recently taken a new turn. We thus purport to reconsider the way populism and crisis are related, mapping the different modalities this relation can take and advancing further their theorization from the point of view of a (...)

The Impact of Perceived Greenwashing on Customer Satisfaction and the Contingent Role of Capability Reputation.Ioannis Ioannou, George Kassinis & Giorgos Papagiannakis - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-15.
We investigate the impact of perceived greenwashing on customer satisfaction. Unlike prior research that largely examines customer perceptions associated with irresponsible behavior, we focus on cases where firms overcommit and/or do not deliver on promised socially responsible actions. We theorize that this type of greenwashing is associated with lower customer satisfaction because customers perceive greenwashing through the lens of corporate hypocrisy. Using data from the American Customer Satisfaction Index for U.S. companies during the period 2008–2016, we document a negative link (...)

    What is Optimized in an Optimal Path?Fraser T. Sparks, Kally C. O'Reilly & John L. Kubie - 2013 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 36 (5):566 - 566.
An animal confronts numerous challenges when constructing an optimal navigational route. Spatial representations used for path optimization are likely constrained by critical environmental factors that dictate which neural systems control navigation. Multiple coding schemes depend upon their ecological relevance for a particular species, particularly when dealing with the third, or vertical, dimension of space.

The 12 essays provide an overview of Balibars work after his collaboration with Althusser. They explain and expand his framework; in particular, by restoring Arabic and Islamic thought to the conversation on the citizen subject. The collection includes two previously untranslated essays by Balibar himself on Carl Schmitt and Thomas Hobbes. (...)
