Scientific endeavor is the pursuit of knowledge with the aim of advancing the welfare of all human beings. This endeavor is built on the ideology of science; thus, society relies on the integrity of the practice of science and of scientists themselves. The responsible conduct of research is the essence of good science; however, many of the pedagogical approaches used to instill integrity in science accentuate the negative rather than exemplify ideal professionalism. This paper makes an argument for the inculcation (...) of the appropriate conduct of research via a positive approach. We address the acclimation to the culture of science that supersedes diverse cultural backgrounds of students. We suggest techniques for the implementation of positive strategies and reinforce the benefit of approaching the teaching of ethical behavior as a competitive advantage. We highlight ways in which this approach can empower the individual scientist and the scientific community as a whole. Transmission of the culture of scientific professionalism formalizes the aims of an ideal scientific professional and encourages assimilation and identification as a member of the scientific profession. We purport that instilling scientific professionalism will spur responsible conduct of research. (shrink)

Manzum Türkçe metinler arasında Süleyman Çelebi’ye ait Vesîletü’n-necât adlı mevlid yüzyıllar boyunca geniş bir coğrafyada çeşitli vesilelerle en çok okunan eserlerden biri olmuştur. Zaman içinde çok sayıda yazma nüshası üretilen Mevlid’in metni çeşitlenmiş, versiyonları ortaya çıkmıştır. Başlangıcı ve gelişimi hakkında detaylı bilgi bulunmasa da Süleyman Çelebi mevlidinin erken dönemden itibaren müzikal bir icra şekline kavuştuğu anlaşılmaktadır. Mevlid’in musiki ile olan beraberliğinde zamanla muhtelif icra şekilleri gelişmiş ve bazı rivayetlerde bestelenmiş olduğu belirtilmiştir. Mevlid yazmaları arasında derkenarda beyit ya da mısra yanlarına (...) çeşitli makam adlarının yazıldığı nüshalar bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada eserin icra serencamı açısından önemli ipuçları taşıyan bu makam kayıtlı Mevlid yazmalarından on dokuz nüsha tespit edilerek analiz edilmiştir. Nüshaların kısaca tanıtılmasının ardından makam kayıtlı Mevlid yazmalarının biçimsel özellikleri, icrada kullanımlarına yönelik hususiyetleri ve makam adlarının kayda geçme yoğunluğu değerlendirilmiştir. Ele alınan on dokuz Mevlid nüshasında her bir bahir/bölüm için tercih edilen makamların sayısal dökümü yapılmıştır. Böylelikle icrada tercih edilen makamlar ve nüshalardaki makam çeşitliliği karşılaştırmalı olarak analiz edilmiştir. Ortaya konan sonuçlar üzerinden Mevlid yazmalarına yansıyan icra özellikleri ve Mevlid’in bestelendiğine yönelik aktarımlar tartışılmıştır. (shrink)

Epistemik açıdan birbirine denk olan ya da denk olduklarını kabul eden öznelerin aynı delillere dayanarak birbirine karşıt inançlar benimsemeleri akran anlaşmazlığı olarak adlandırılır. Böyle bir ihtilaf durumu karşısında hangi epistemik tutumun rasyonel olduğu tartışmalıdır. Uzlaşımcı yaklaşıma göre, bir akran anlaşmazlığında rasyonel olan reaksiyon öznelerin kendilerinde bir kusur olduğunu düşünmeleri ve ihtilaf konusu inançlarını askıya almalarıdır. Buna karşın Lackey, akran anlaşmazlığı durumlarında öznenin kendisinden şüphe etmesi gerektiğini ileri süren uzlaşımcı teze karşı çıkar. Ona göre yüksek düzeyde gerekçeli inançlar söz konusuysa, öznenin (...) kusuru karşısındakinde araması rasyonel bir reaksiyondur. O halde, özne başlangıçta epistemik bakımdan akranı kabul ettiği kişinin bundan böyle akranı olmadığına inanabilir. Bu nedenle, Lackey’e göre uzlaşımcı tez hatalıdır. Lackey’nin itirazına cevap olarak Christensen, yüksek düzeyde gerekçelendirilmiş inançlarla ilgili anlaşmazlıklarda Lackey’e hak vermekle birlikte, bunun uzlaşımcı yaklaşıma karşıt bir durum oluşturmadığını düşünmektedir. Ancak, Christensen’ın bu savunması bir başka soruna yol açmaktadır. Problem şu ki, bazı durumlarda öznenin, karşısındakinin akranı olmadığına inanması uzlaşımcı görüşle uyumsuz bir sonuç verir. Dolayısıyla, anlaşmazlığa rağmen hangi durumlarda benimsenen inancın korunabileceğinin netleştirilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu makalede, yüksek düzeyde gerekçeli inançların, özneler için karşısındakinin akranı olmadığına inanmayı her zaman makulleştiren bir sebep sunmadığı ileri sürülecektir. Teravih namazının dört rekâtlık bölümlerinin farklı makamlardan tilavetle kılınması ile aralarında uygun ilahi ve salavatların okunması şeklindeki cami musikisi uygulaması teravih tertibi adıyla anılmaktadır. Tarihi süreciyle ilgili detaylı bilgi bulunmasa da özellikle son yüzyılda Ramazan ayının her gecesi için seçilmiş ilahilerin yer aldığı birkaç derleme kaleme alınmıştır. Bu çalışmada Kasımpaşa Mevlevîhânesi dervişlerinden Edirneli Ömer Efendi tarafından 1889’da hazırlanan, bugün Milli Kütüphane Yazmalar Koleksiyonu’nda A-1258 numarada kayıtlı, Ramazân-ı Şerîfe Mahsûs Âyîn-i Şerîf Mecmûası değerlendirilecektir. Mecmuanın diğer tertiplerden farkı, repertuvarın ağırlıklı olarak Mevlevî (...) âyinlerinden seçilen pasajlardan oluşmasıdır. Yirmi altı gece için hazırlanan mecmuanın girişinde bir fihrist yer almaktadır. İlerleyen sayfalarda her gece için seçilen âyin pasajları ve az sayıdaki ilahinin güfteleri yazılmıştır. Çalışmada öncelikle mecmuanın yapısı, düzeni ve kullanımı analiz edilmiştir. Ardından pasajlarının hangi Mevlevî âyinlerine ait olduğu tespit edilerek mecmuanın repertuvarı ortaya konmuştur. Buradan hareketle ilgili mecmua ile sonraki teravihe mahsus ilahi derlemelerinin mukayesesi yapılarak teravih tertibinde ortaya çıkan çeşitlilik tartışılmıştır. (shrink)

The title of this presentation may suggest that the subject is homocystinuria. It is not. Rather, the subject is how our epistemology influences our concept of disease, which in turn determines our ability to help patients.

A "problem" book which reads, throughout too many of its pages, like an almanac of distinctions. Yet Bunge's discussions of partial truth, causality and chance, and especially of metanomological statements restore the balance and lend support to his thesis: science as a body of knowledge must be regarded as a set of systems of propositions and proposals of many kinds with the aim of "the maximization of the degree of truth."--G.
