  7. Sensory Representation and Cognitive Architecture: An Alternative to Phenomenal Concepts.Peter Fazekas & Zoltán Jakab - manuscript
We present a cognitive-physicalist account of phenomenal consciousness. We argue that phenomenal concepts do not differ from other types of concepts. When explaining the peculiarities of conscious experience, the right place to look at is sensory/ perceptual representations and their interaction with general conceptual structures. We utilize Jerry Fodor’s psycho- semantic theory to formulate our view. We compare and contrast our view with that of Murat Aydede and Güven Güzeldere, who, using Dretskean psychosemantic theory, arrived at a solution different from (...)

    Were You a Zygote?: G. E. M. Anscombe.G. E. M. Anscombe - 1984 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Supplement 18:111-115.
The usual way for new cells to come into being is by division of old cells. So the zygote, which is a—new—single cell formed from two, the sperm and ovum, is an exception. Textbooks of human genetics usually say that this new cell is beginning of a new human individual. What this indicates is that they suddenly forget about identical twins.

    J. G. Herder on Social and Political Culture.J. G. Herder & F. M. Barnard - 2010 - Cambridge University Press.
The texts collected in this volume, which was originally published in 1969, contain Herder's most original and stimulating ideas on politics, history and language. They had for the most part not been previously available in English. In his introduction, Professor Barnard analyses the basic premises of Herder's political thought against the background of the Enlightenment. He examines Herder's concepts of language, community and culture, his theory of historical interaction, and his approach to the problem of change and progress. Finally, he (...)

Wittgenstein: Lectures, Cambridge 1930-1933: From the Notes of G. E. Moore.David G. Stern, Brian Rogers & Gabriel Citron (eds.) - 2016 - Cambridge University Press.
This edition of G. E. Moore's notes taken at Wittgenstein's seminal Cambridge lectures in the early 1930s provides, for the first time, an almost verbatim record of those classes. The presentation of the notes is both accessible and faithful to their original manuscripts, and a comprehensive introduction and synoptic table of contents provide the reader with essential contextual information and summaries of the topics in each lecture. The lectures form an excellent introduction to Wittgenstein's middle-period thought, covering a broad range (...)

Originally published in 1927, this book was written as a reaction to the First World War, hoping to try and analyse the causes leading up to it. The author states in the Preface that he puts this forward as an unsystematic contribution to what he is conscious is a very great subject, and he adds since Aristotle, an almost untouched one. He starts by looking at the nature, methods and uses of history, considered from a political point of view. He (...)

If you wish to aid the student whose German is weak to begin reading Hegel, you should compose him a literal crib of the type so helpful to the struggling schoolboy; but you should tell him that he must as soon as possible improve his German and throw away his crutch. If, on the other hand, you are fired by the very different ambition of translating Hegel’s thought truly for the intelligent reader who has no German, then you must write (...)

    Wolfgang Pauli Und C. G. Jung: Ein Briefwechsel 1932–1958.Wolfgang Pauli, C. A. Meier, C. G. Jung & M. Fierz - 1992 - Springer.

In The Varieties of Reference, Gareth Evans argues that the content of perceptual experience is nonconceptual, in a sense I shall explain momentarily. More recently, in his book Mind and World, John McDowell has argued that the reasons Evans gives for this claim are not compelling and, moreover, that Evans’s view is a version of “the Myth of the Given”: More precisely, Evans’s view is alleged to suffer from the same sorts of problems that plague sense-datum theories of perception. In (...)
