    Struggling Between Strength and Vulnerability, a Patients’ Counter Story.G. J. Teunissen, M. A. Visse & T. A. Abma - 2015 - Health Care Analysis 23 (3):288-305.
Currently, patients are expected to take control over their health and their life and act as independent users and consumers. Simultaneously, health care policy demands patients are expected to self manage their disease. This article critically questions whether this is a realistic expectation. The paper presents the auto-ethnographic narrative of the first author, which spans a period of 27 years, from 1985 to 2012. In total nine episodes were extracted from various notes, conversations and discussions in an iterative process. Each (...)

Emerging adults’ food media experiences : Preferences, opportunities, and barriers for food literacy promotion.Lauranna Teunissen, Isabelle Cuykx, Paulien Decorte, Heidi Vandebosch, Christophe Matthys, Sara Pabian, Kathleen Van Royen & Charlotte De Backer - forthcoming - Communications.
This study aims to understand how and why emerging adults come into contact with food media messages, and what they perceive as positive and negative outcomes related to food literacy. Seven focus groups, stratified by gender and socio-economic status, with 37 emerging adults aged between 18 and 25 were conducted. Photovoice was used to reflect on participants’ real-life food media experiences. Findings reveal that food media consumption is a combination of actively searching and incidentally encountering. The results suggest that food (...)

Living a Meaningful Life and Taking Good Care of Oneself in Times of Illness: Highlighting a Dilemma.Truus Teunissen, Paul Lindhout, Karen Schipper & Tineke Abma - 2019 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 12 (1):44-60.
An authoethnography explores the lived experiences of patients being in control and self-managing their chronic illness among their families and friends. Findings show that the current health discourse narrows down people to mere patients and gives rise to tensions. This article indicates that people with one or several chronic illnesses or disabilities are first of all full citizens with needs, values, and drives seeking a meaningful life. Fair possibilities ought to exist to satisfy their needs to belong, to care for (...)

Dialogue for Air, Air for Dialogue: Towards Shared Responsibilities in COPD Practice.Merel A. Visse, Truus Teunissen, Albert Peters, Guy A. M. Widdershoven & Tineke A. Abma - 2010 - Health Care Analysis 18 (4):358-373.
For the past several years patients have been expected to play a key role in their recovery. Self management and disease management have reached a hype status. Considering these recent trends what does this mean for the division of responsibilities between doctors and patients? What kind of role should healthcare providers play? With findings based on a qualitative research project of an innovative practice for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) we reflect on these questions. In-depth interviews conducted with (...)

Humanity of the Human and the Politics of Vulnerability.Rita Fulco - 2023 - In Stefania Achella & Chantal Marazia (eds.), Vulnerabilities: Rethinking Medicine Rights and Humanities in Post-pandemic. Springer Verlag. pp. 35-44.
What I propose is to explicit the relationship between two dimensions, which, in my opinion, are inseparable from any discourse about vulnerability. On the one hand, the horizon of politics and institutions, the horizon of practice; on the other, that relative to the definition of the ‘humanity of the human’, the theoretical horizon. To talk about the ‘politics of vulnerability’, we need to understand what is meant by vulnerability and the dimensions it implies. In this particular case, I want to (...)

    A political ontology for Europe: Roberto Esposito’s instituent paradigm.Rita Fulco - 2021 - Continental Philosophy Review 54 (3):367-386.
The aim of my article is to relate Roberto Esposito’s reflections on Europe to his more recent proposal of instituent thought. I will try to do so by focusing on three theoretical cornerstones of Esposito’s thought: the first concerns the evidence of a link between Europe, philosophy and politics. The second is deconstructive: it highlights the inadequacy of the answers of the most important contemporary ontological-political paradigms to the European crisis, as well as the impossibility of interpreting this crisis through (...)

Conflitto e profezia. Mario Tronti e Sergio Quinzio.Rita Fulco - 2019 - Giornale Critico di Storia Delle Idee 1:171-180.
This essay aims to demonstrate that the concepts of conflict and prophecy play a key role in the thought of Mario Tronti and Sergio Quinzio – even though they are interpreted in a different way. Tronti describes them as “extreme think- ing and careful acting”, remaining “within and against” the mainstream sociopolitical system. Quinzio, instead, interprets conflict and prophecy as spes contra spem, “hoping against hope” ; hence, he observes the present lucidly, remaining tenaciously faithful to the promise of the (...)

Politics and ‘spiritual education’ in Simone Weil’s last writings.Rita Fulco - 2023 - Logos. Anales Del Seminario de Metafísica [Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España] 56 (2):223-234.
The aim of this article is to relate the concept of 'force' to that of 'spiritual education'. Starting from it, we can better understand the link, fundamental for Simone Weil also in the political sphere, between immanence and transcendence. The predominance of force over immanence seems, indeed, to decree the impossibility of a 'just' politics. Weil shows that awareness of the predominance of force in this world is a first and indispensable step towards justice. This explains the centrality that Weil (...)
