What happens when something happens? In Thinking the Event, senior continental philosophy scholar François Raffoul undertakes a philosophical inquiry into what constitutes an event as event, its very eventfulness: not what happens or why it happens, but that it happens, and what "happening" means. If, as Leibniz posited, it is true that nothing happens without a reason, does this principle of reason have a reason? For Raffoul, the event always breaks the demands of rational thought. Bringing together philosophical insights from (...) Heidegger, Derrida, Nancy, and Marion, Raffoul shows how the event, in its disruptive unpredictability, always exceeds causality, subjectivity, and reason. It is that "pure event," each time happening outside or without reason, which remains to be thought, and which is the focus of this work. In the final movement of the book, Raffoul takes on questions about the inappropriability of the event and the implications this carries for ethical and political considerations when thinking the event. In the wake of the exhaustion of traditional metaphysics, the notion of the event comes to the fore in an unprecedented way, with key implications for philosophy, ontology, ethics, and theories of selfhood. Among the cognitive capacities of evolved creatures is the capacity to represent. Theories in cognitive neuroscience typically explain our manifest representational capacities by positing internal representations, but there is little agreement about how these representations function, especially with the relatively recent proliferation of connectionist, dynamical, embodied, and enactive approaches to cognition. In this talk I sketch an account of the nature and function of representation in cognitive neuroscience that couples a realist construal of representational vehicles with a pragmatic account of (...) mental content. I call the resulting package a deflationary account of mental representation and I argue that it avoids the problems that afflict competing accounts. (shrink)

Dastur is well respected in France and Europe for her mastery of phenomenology as a movement and her clear and cogent explications of phenomenology in movement. These qualities are on display in this remarkable set of essays. The book is organized into four areas of inquiry: Language and Logic, Ego and Other, Temporality and History,and Finitude and Mortality. In each, Dastur guides the reader through a series of phenomenological questions that also serve to call phenomenology itself into question, testing its (...) limits and pushing it in newdirections. Taking a cue from Merleau-Ponty, Dastur sees phenomenology not as a doctrine, a catalogue of concepts and catchphrases authored by a single thinker, but rather as a movement in which several thinkers participate, each one contributing to and inflecting the development of the movement in unique ways. She thus draws inspiration from Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Ricoeur, Gadamer, Fink, and Patocka, moving with ease from one thinker's conceptual vocabulary and outlook to the next's, feeling at home in each, and communicating their central ideas with clarity.Through her critical and productive dialogue with multiple phenomenological thinkers, Dastur concisely shows one thinker's debts to and departures from another and reveals the limits of one's approach while highlighting the innovation of another's. She does this judiciously, without choosing sides, because for her, phenomenology is above all a way of thinking through a problem and practicing a method. The fecundity of the movement is appreciated only by participating in it--it has always thought of itself as philosophical research undertaken by and through a community of thinkers who share certain fundamental questions and ways of approaching those questions, even if their responses to these questions often differ. Quand on avance dans la vie, il est une question qu'on ne peut plus, peu à peu, ne pas se poser : pourquoi est-ce que je continue de vivre? Cette question, on peut la maintenir au niveau bas du développement personnel, affublé en "sagesse", et du marché du bonheur. Ou bien l'affronter philosophiquement pour y chercher une issue plus ambitieuse qui soit la promotion d'une "seconde" vie. Une seconde vie est une vie qui, du cours même de la vie, se (...) décale lentement d'elle-même et commence de se choisir et de se réformer. Pour y accéder, il faudra penser ce que sont des vérités, non pas démontrées, mais décantées à partir de la vie même ; ou comment, de l'expérience accumulée, on peut à nouveau essayer ; ou comment la lucidité est ce savoir négatif (de Pecq!) qui nous vient malgré nous, mais qu'on peut assumer ; ou comment la vie peut ouvrir, non sur une conversion, mais sur une vie dégagée. Ou comment un second amour, fondé, non plus sur la possession, mais sur l'infini de l'intime, peut débuter. Depuis Droit, mythe et raison (1980) écrit avec Jacques Lenoble jusqu’aux récents À quoi sert le droit? Usages, fonctions et finalités (2016) ou Le droit, objet de passions (2018), François Ost ne cesse de questionner les rapports de nos sociétés au droit et la place de celui-ci dans nos sociétés contemporaines. Avec Le droit malgré tout, il s’agit de rendre hommage à l’œuvre et à la carrière d’une figure centrale de la théorie du droit contemporaine et aussi au fondateur, avec (...) le regretté Michel van de Kerchove, de ce que l’on appelle parfois « l’école de Saint-Louis ». There is a long history of using facts about disagreement to argue that many of our most precious beliefs are false in a way that can make a difference in our lives. In this essay I go over a series of such arguments, arguing that the best arguments target beliefs that meet two conditions: (i) they have been investigated and debated for a very long time by a great many very smart people who are your epistemic superiors on the matter (...) and have worked very hard under optimal circumstances to figure out if the belief is true, and (ii) as far as you know these people have not come to any significant agreement on the belief and as far as you know those who agree with you are not, as a group, in a better position to judge the belief than those who disagree with you. Bringing together ideas of beauty from both Eastern and Western philosophy, Jullien challenges the assumptions underlying our commonly agreed upon definition of what is beautiful and offers a new way of beholding art. Looking specifically at how Chinese texts have been translated into Western languages, Jullien reveals how the traditional Chinese refusal to isolate or abstract beauty is obscured in translation in order to make the works more understandable (...) to Western readers. Quelle est la place de la psychologie dans l'esthétique et, inversement, quelle est la place de l'esthétique dans la psychologie? Quelles sont les réponses esthétiques élémentaires? Quels sont les attributs sémantiques des couleurs? Quelle est l'évolution génétique du goût et du jugement esthétiques? Voici quelques unes des questions auxquelles cet ouvrage de Robert Francès tente de répondre.

Un soupçon s'est insidieusement levé, un matin : que la vie pourrait être tout autre que la vie qu'on vit. Que cette vie qu'on vit n'est plus peut-être qu'une apparence ou un semblant de vie. Que nous sommes peut-être en train de passer, sans même nous en apercevoir, à côté de la "vraie vie". Car nos vies se résignent par rétractation des possibles. Elles s'enlisent sous l'entassement des jours. Elles s'aliènent sous l'emprise du marché et de la technicisation forcée. Elles (...) se réifient, enfin, ou deviennent "chose", sous tant de recouvrements. Or, qu'est-ce que la "vraie vie"? La formule, à travers les âges, a vibré comme une invocation suprême. De Platon à Rimbaud, à Proust, à Adorno. La "vraie vie" n'est pas la vie belle, ou la vie bonne, ou la vie heureuse, telle que l'a vantée la sagesse. Elle n'est surtout pas dans les boniments du "Bonheur" et du développement personnel qui font aujourd'hui un commerce de leur pseudo-pensée. La vraie vie ne projette aucun contenu idéal. Ce ne serait toujours qu'une redite du paradis. Elle ne verse pas non plus dans quelque vitalisme auto-célébrant la vie. Mais elle est le refus têtu de la vie perdue ; dans le non à là pseudo-vie. La vraie vie, c'est tenter de résister à la non-vie comme penser est résister à la non-pensée. En quoi elle est bien l'enjeu crucial - mais si souvent délaissé - de la philosophie. (shrink)

Y a-t-il une experience de la sante? La sante n'est-elle que l'absence de maladies? Etre en bonne sante, est-ce la meme chose qu'etre normal? Dois-je attendre de voir ce que l'avenir me reserve pour juger de l'etat de ma sante? La difference entre sante et maladie est-elle une difference comme les autres? Voila certaines des questions que pose le present ouvrage, grace a une methode qui croise la philosophie avec d'autres types de savoirs : la medecine, la biologie, mais aussi (...) la litterature et les sciences humaines. Cette etude conduit a confronter l'approche issue de Canguilhem avec d'autres conceptions philosophiques moins connues en France : celles de Boorse, Engelhardt et Nordenfelt. Il en ressort que les notions de sante et de maladie sont d'un maniement extremement delicat du fait de leur imprecision, sans doute irreductible, et du poids ideologique qui est le leur. Elles n'en sont pas moins centrales dans notre experience et dans les enjeux politiques d'aujourd'hui. (shrink)
