A história da psicologia, tal como aparece em algumas obras (E.G. Boring 1950; M. Reuchlin 1957; P. Fraisse e J. Piaget 1963) ou em capítulos introdutórios de alguns manuais (M. Reuchlin 1977), reflete uma adesão — raramente discutida — a uma concepção internalista. Segundo essa concepção, a psicologia seria animada por uma dinâmica própria, um processo evolutivo totalmente endógeno, e seria independente de fatores externos tais como os domínios religiosos, sociopolíticos e econômicos. Além do mais, os partidários dessa história (...) aceitam ver a psicologia influenciada por disciplinas situadas em suas fronteiras, como a biologia, a fisiologia e, em menor medida, a física. Esses domínios fronteiriços geralmente dizem respeito a objetos psicológicos habitualmente qualificados de inferiores, como reflexos, sensações e percepções, em oposição à linguagem e ao pensamento, qualificados como processos superiores. Esses mesmos domínios fronteiriços engendraram por sua vez subdomínios relativamente autônomos, tais como a psicofísica ou a psicofisiologia. Correlativamente a essa concepção internalista, o desenvolvimento científico é apresentado como um caminho ao estado de psicologia positiva, tal como A. Comte a definiu em 1837 na 45a lição do Curso de Filosofia Positiva. A caminhada até a positividade foi indicada pelo próprio A. Comte: estudo da anátomo-fisiologia do sistema nervoso (a frenologia de Gall lhe parece a esse respeito uma contribuição decisiva), estudos comparados, análise de casos patológicos, estudo dos comportamentos animais e do desenvolvimento individual. Considerando a evolução da psicologia nos últimos cem anos, seríamos tentados a sustentar que ela realizou o projeto positivista. Psicologia diferencial, psicopatologia, etologia animal e psicologia da criança são vários domínios que concorrem para essa realização. Entretanto, esses domínios estão longe de parecerem homogêneos quanto aos métodos empregados e os modelos epistemológicos aos quais se referem. Um exame atento dessas dimensões metodológicas e epistemológicas mostra que se avança, sobretudo, em ordem dispersa. (shrink)

The general theory developed by Ben Yaacov for metric structures provides Fraïssé limits which are approximately ultrahomogeneous. We show here that this result can be strengthened in the case of relational metric structures. We give an extra condition that guarantees exact ultrahomogenous limits. The condition is quite general. We apply it to stochastic processes, the class of diversities, and its subclass of $L_1$ diversities.

L'interet qu'accorde la philosophie moderne et contemporaine au probleme d'autrui est souvent, et a juste titre, considere comme l'une de ses principales caracteristiques. Peut-on neanmoins croire que cette question de l'intersubjectivite ou de l'interpersonnalite, telle que la poserent Fichte ou Husserl, soit une pure invention ex nihilo de l'epoque contemporaine? Ou bien l'historien de la philosophie, s'il se veut philosophe, ne doit-il pas au contraire postuler l'existence d'une continuite de la reflexion philosophique, et discerner par la comment une question qui (...) se presente comme radicalement neuve manifeste en fait la resurgence d'une meditation et d'un probleme plus anciens? Que les systemes et les reponses changent mais que les questions et les problemes auxquels ils repondent demeurent, telle est la conviction premiere qui anime cet essai. Ainsi, loin que le probleme des rapports avec autrui ait ete absent de la philosophie antique, l'auteur montre dans ce livre comment cette interrogation fut longtemps presente chez les Grecs, sous l'aspect d'une reflexion sur la nature et les conditions de la philia. Cette analyse du theme de l'amitie, indissociable chez les Grecs de leur metaphysique et de leur morale, revele ainsi une pensee du rapport entre les consciences qui, faisant eclater les oppositions factices issues du dualisme classique entre raison et sentiment ou encore entre amour de soi et amour d'autrui, permet d'elaborer une representation plus unitive, plus dynamique aussi, du moi lui-meme. Cet article est le premier d’une série de contributions dont l’objectif est de rendre compte des investigations menées à Délos sur les différents secteurs de la ville qui n’ont jusqu’à présent fait l’objet d’aucune fouille. Celui‑ci est consacré à la région située au nord et à l’est du stade, au contact de la presqu’île de Patinioti. Il ressort des observations réalisées en surface du terrain naturel qu’on a affaire à un quartier d’habitations organisé en îlots autour d’une voie principale nord-sud, (...) qui semble être la continuité du quartier du Stade fouillé par A. Plassart et pourrait dater de la seconde période de la domination athénienne après 167 av. J.‑C. Sur les franges littorales est et ouest, les maisons sont construites perpendiculairement à la ligne du rivage, obligeant les constructeurs à réaliser d’importants travaux de génie civil. Les différences structurelles observées entre ces deux systèmes conduisent à se poser la question de la chronologie relative qui a présidé au développement de ce secteur. (shrink)

Cet article est une introduction aux études de morphologie urbaine entreprises à Délos depuis quelques années. Les recherches nouvellement menées, qui, à Délos, sont justifiées par l’étendue des surfaces en jeu et par des conditions d’observation particulièrement favorables, ont pour objectif d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur la ville et de pallier les manques concernant la connaissance et la compréhension de ses caractères morphologiques. La méthode mise en œuvre est présentée au travers des étapes qu’elle est appelée à suivre, chacune faisant (...) l’objet d’une description détaillée. Après avoir complété le plan de la ville par le relevé des secteurs urbanisés jusqu’ici non fouillés, mené une analyse de la forme urbaine à partir de la documentation produite sur chacun des quartiers, et confronté ces résultats à la réalité archéologique, cette recherche pourrait permettre d’éclairer les différents processus d’urbanisation, leurs modalités et leurs règles, en s’efforçant de les replacer dans une perspective chronologique du développement de la ville. In some previous work, I tried to give a concept-based account of the nature of our entitlement to certain very basic inferences (see the papers in Part III of Boghossian 2008b). In this previous work, I took it for granted, along with many other philosophers, that we understood well enough what it is for a person to infer. In this paper, I turn to thinking about the nature of inference itself. This topic is of great interest in its own right (...) and surprisingly understudied by philosophers. A correct understanding of inference promises to shed light on a number of important topics. In particular, it threatens to undermine the sort of concept-based story about entitlement to which I had previously been attracted. (shrink)

Eliminative materialism is the thesis that our common-sense conception of psychological phenomena constitutes a radically false theory, a theory so fundamentally defective that both the principles and the ontology of that theory will eventually be displaced, rather than smoothly reduced, by completed neuroscience. Our mutual understanding and even our introspection may then be reconstituted within the conceptual framework of completed neuroscience, a theory we may expect to be more powerful by far than the common-sense psychology it displaces, and more substantially (...) integrated within physical science generally. My purpose in this paper is to explore these projections, especially as they bear on (1) the principal elements of common-sense psychology: the propositional attitudes (beliefs, desires, etc.), and (2) the conception of rationality in which these elements figure. A study of how syntax relates to meaning by a leader of the new generation of philosopher-linguists.

The twentieth century has witnessed an unprecedented 'crisis in the foundations of mathematics', featuring a world-famous paradox, a challenge to 'classical' mathematics from a world-famous mathematician, a new foundational school, and the profound incompleteness results of Kurt Gödel. In the same period, the cross-fertilization of mathematics and philosophy resulted in a new sort of 'mathematical philosophy', associated most notably with Bertrand Russell, W. V. Quine, and Gödel himself, and which remains at the focus of Anglo-Saxon philosophical discussion. The present collection (...) brings together in a convenient form the seminal articles in the philosophy of mathematics by these and other major thinkers. It is a substantially revised version of the edition first published in 1964 and includes a revised bibliography. The volume will be welcomed as a major work of reference at this level in the field. In this chapter, we analyze the relationships between the Internet and its users in terms of situated cognition theory. We first argue that the Internet is a new kind of cognitive ecology, providing almost constant access to a vast amount of digital information that is increasingly more integrated into our cognitive routines. We then briefly introduce situated cognition theory and its species of embedded, embodied, extended, distributed and collective cognition. Having thus set the stage, we begin by taking an embedded (...) cognition view and analyze how the Internet aids certain cognitive tasks. After that, we conceptualize how the Internet enables new kinds of embodied interaction, extends certain aspects of our embodiment, and examine how wearable technologies that monitor physiological, behavioral and contextual states transform the embodied self. On the basis of the degree of cognitive integration between a user and Internet resource, we then look at how and when the Internet extends our cognitive processes. We end this chapter with a discussion of distributed and collective cognition as facilitated by the Internet. (shrink)

Supporters of G.W.F. Hegel's philosophy have largely shied away from relating his logic to modern symbolic or mathematical approaches. While it has predominantly been the non-Greek discipline of algebra that has informed modern mathematical logic, philosopher Paul Redding argues that the approaches of Plato and Aristotle to logic were deeply shaped by the arithmetic and geometry of classical Greek culture. And by ignoring the fact that Hegel's logic also has this deep mathematical dimension, conventional Hegelians have missed some of (...) Hegel's greatest insights. In Conceptual Harmonies, Redding develops an account of Hegel's logic against a classical and modern historical background that is rarely considered. He stresses Hegel's attention to the Platonic background of Aristotle's original syllogistic and beyond. He then links these Platonic elements to Leibniz's modern revitalization of the logical tradition and then to new forms of algebraic geometry emerging in Hegel's lifetime. Redding thereby reestablishes aspects of Hegel's philosophy that are essential if Hegel is to be taken as a thinker relevant not only to contemporary philosophy, but also to current philosophical conceptions of logic.
