The free-energy principle (FEP) builds on an assumption that sensor–motor loops exhibit Markov blankets in stationary state. We argue that there is rarely reason to assume a system's internal and external states are conditionally independent given the sensorimotor states, and often reason to assume otherwise. However, under mild assumptions internal and external states are conditionally independent given the sensorimotor history.

The immune system is a central component of organismic function in humans. This paper addresses self-organization of biological systems in relation to—and nested within—other biological systems in pregnancy. Pregnancy constitutes a fundamental state for human embodiment and a key step in the evolution and conservation of our species. While not all humans can be pregnant, our initial state of emerging and growing within another person's body is universal. Hence, the pregnant state does not concern some individuals but all individuals. Indeed, (...) the hierarchical relationship in pregnancy reflects an even earlier autopoietic process in the embryo by which the number of individuals in a single blastoderm is dynamically determined by cell– interactions. The relationship and the interactions between the two self-organizing systems during pregnancy may play a pivotal role in understanding the nature of biological self-organization per se in humans. Specifically, we consider the role of the immune system in biological self-organization in addition to neural/brain systems that furnish us with a sense of self. We examine the complex case of pregnancy, whereby two immune systems need to negotiate the exchange of resources and information in order to maintain viable self-regulation of nested systems. We conclude with a proposal for the mechanisms—that scaffold the complex relationship between two self-organising systems in pregnancy—through the lens of the Active Inference, with a focus on shared Markov blankets. Can the use of psychedelic drugs induce lasting changes in metaphysical beliefs? While it is popularly believed that they can, this question has never been formally tested. Here we exploited a large sample derived from prospective online surveying to determine whether and how beliefs concerning the nature of reality, consciousness, and free‑will, change after psychedelic use. Results revealed significant shifts away from ‘physicalist’ or ‘materialist’ views, and towards panpsychism and fatalism, post use. With the exception of fatalism, these changes endured (...) for at least 6 months, and were positively correlated with the extent of past psychedelic‑use and improved mental‑health outcomes. Path modelling suggested that the belief‑shifts were moderated by impressionability at baseline and mediated by perceived emotional synchrony with others during the psychedelic experience. The observed belief‑shifts post‑psychedelic‑use were consolidated by data from an independent controlled clinical trial. Together, these findings imply that psychedelic‑use may causally influence metaphysical beliefs—shifting them away from ‘hard materialism’. We discuss whether these apparent effects are contextually independent. (shrink)

Parental burnout is a unique and context-specific syndrome resulting from a chronic imbalance of risks over resources in the parenting domain. The current research aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Parental Burnout Assessment across Spanish-speaking countries with two consecutive studies. In Study 1, we analyzed the data through a bifactor model within an Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling on the pooled sample of participants obtaining good fit indices. We then attained measurement invariance across both gender (...) and countries in a set of nested models with gradually increasing parameter constraints. Latent means comparisons across countries showed that among the participants’ countries, Chile had the highest parental burnout score, likewise, comparisons across gender evidenced that mothers displayed higher scores than fathers, as shown in previous studies. Reliability coefficients were high. In Study 2, we tested the relations between parental burnout and three specific consequences, i.e., escape and suicidal ideations, parental neglect, and parental violence toward one’s children. The medium to large associations found provided support for the PBA’s predictive validity. Overall, we concluded that the Spanish version of the PBA has good psychometric properties. The results support its relevance for the assessment of parental burnout among Spanish-speaking parents, offering new opportunities for cross-cultural research in the parenting domain. (shrink)

This paper analyzes Maurizio Ferraris’s “minimal realism” with the aim of showing that his criticisms of correlationism and constructivism are not convincing. Ferraris preserves both a substantivist vision of the objects of knowledge and a substantial difference between sensible things and concepts. These two issues prevent his Manifesto of New Realism from being considered the founding moment of the “new realism.” The paper concludes with a reflection on those aspects that should be considered and avoided when proposing a philosophical realism.

En este artículo se analiza la percepción social y política de los temas relacionados con la gestión del agua en España, mostrando cómo se ha pasado de una lógica hidráulica y sectorial (agraria), canalizada a través de los ministerios de Obras Públicas y Agricultura, a otra integral y multifuncional, en la que se valoran sus implicaciones territoriales y en la que asume protagonismo el ministerio de Medio Ambiente. En ese contexto, se analizan las nuevas orientaciones de las políticas de desarrollo (...) rural, especialmente en lo relacionado con la gestión sostenible de los recursos hídricos en la agricultura y sus efectos sobre el territorio. La diversidad del regadío agrícola en España es analizada por los autores, proponiendo una tipología de zonas regables con problemas de eficiencia, y valorando en qué medida las acciones contempladas en el nuevo Reglamento europeo de Desarrollo Rural (FEADER) pueden ser un instrumento útil para avanzar en la sostenibilidad ambiental de dichas áreas. La conclusión de los autores es que la utilidad de esta nueva política de desarrollo rural dependerá de que exista una adecuada cooperación entre los departamentos de agricultura y medio ambiente a nivel regional. El estudio utiliza un enfoque analítico-conceptual y una metodología documental, tomando como unidades de análisis a los principales referentes filosóficos sobre la libertad. A través de un análisis comparativo, se identifican los principales cambios y continuidades en la evolución de este concepto, explorando (...) las diversas perspectivas y matices aportados por pensadores clave en la historia occidental. This paper presents an overview of the activation of background knowledge during text comprehension. We first review the cognitive processes involved in the activation of inferences during text comprehension, stressing the interaction between text and reader in the construction of situation models. Second, we review evidence for embodied theories of cognition and discuss how this new framework can inform our understanding of the nature and role of background knowledge. We then review the neuropsychological data on the activation of background knowledge (...) during text comprehension. ABSTRACTIn two experiments, we explored whether anecdotal stories influenced how individuals reasoned when evaluating scientific news articles. We additionally considered the role of education level and thinking dispositions on reasoning. Participants evaluated eight scientific news articles that drew questionable interpretations from the evidence. Overall, anecdotal stories decreased the ability to reason scientifically even when controlling for education level and thinking dispositions. Additionally, we found that article length was related to participants' ratings of the news articles. Our study demonstrates that anecdotes (...) can discourage scientific reasoning while also pointing to the potential influence of article length on judgements of quality. (shrink)

Owing to the global coronavirus pandemic, some were delivered at a later date. The Tanner Lectures are published in an annual volume. En este artículo exponemos cómo aplicando la metodología del Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas (ABP) y un sistema de evaluación continua a alumnos de primer curso del grado de Óptica en la asignatura de Fisiología Ocular han mejorado, con carácter general, las calificaciones finales de los alumnos.

One key concept in the large body of scholarship concerned with theorizing social relations is the idea of 'cosmopolitanism'. This book unpacks the idea of cosmopolitanism through the linked knowledges of the Global South. It brings into dialogue an inter-disciplinary team of local and transnational scholars who examine various temporal, cultural, spatial and political contexts in countries as different, yet connected, as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The book also considers a wide range of subjects – (...) present and historical, real, as represented in literature and in theatre, and as theorized in philosophy – across these diverse contexts, but always focusing on regions and places where inter-Asian intermingling has taken place. The conclusions arrived at are varied and considerably enrich social theorizing. The book reveals a cosmopolitanism that is much more specifically Asian than the cosmopolitanism usually associated with the West, demonstrates how concepts of 'nation', 'local' and 'globalization' play out in practice in Asian settings, and re-examines concepts such as migration, diaspora, and the construction of identities. En este trabajo se intenta mostrar que la filosofía de la historia supone un compromiso ético y que sus reflexiones, además de versar sobre el pasado o sobre la conciencia temporal, también pueden favorecer una crítica del presente que sea útil para generar expectativas positivas acerca del futuro. En primer lugar, se analiza el concepto kantiano de esperanza en el marco de su filosofía de la historia, para rescatar su utilidad política e histórica. Luego, se considera el potencial de este (...) concepto de esperanza de inspiración kantiana para una filosofía de la historia éticamente comprometida. Finalmente, se defiende la idea de que la filosofía de la historia no se restringe a ser una reflexión sobre el pasado o una crítica del conocimiento histórico o una indagación sobre las experiencias temporales. La filosofía de la historia también puede proveer una perspectiva esperanzadora que permita orientar deseos y pronósticos del presente en el camino de la realización de un mundo mejor. (shrink)
