  4. The Extended Cognition Thesis: Its Significance for the Philosophy of (Cognitive) Science.Eric Arnau, Anna Estany, Rafael Gonz’Alez Del Solar & Thomas Sturm - 2014 - Philosophical Psychology 27 (1):1-18.
While the extended cognition (EC) thesis has gained more followers in cognitive science and in the philosophy of mind and knowledge, our main goal is to discuss a different area of significance of the EC thesis: its relation to philosophy of science. In this introduction, we outline two major areas: (I) The role of the thesis for issues in the philosophy of cognitive science, such as: How do notions of EC figure in theories or research programs in cognitive science? Which (...)

  7. Did Nature Also Choose Arsenic ?Felisa Wolfe-Simon & Paul C. W. Davies - unknown
: All known life requires phosphorus (P) in the form of inorganic phosphate (PO43x or Pi) and phosphate-containing organic molecules. Pi serves as the backbone of the nucleic acids that constitute genetic material and as the major repository of chemical energy for metabolism in polyphosphate bonds. Arsenic (As) lies directly below P on the periodic table and so the two elements share many chemical properties, although their chemistries are sufficiently dissimilar that As cannot directly replace P in modern biochemistry. Arsenic (...)

Slavoj Žižek proponuje jeszcze inną interpretację - błyskotliwą i pełną paradoksów. Być może rzeczywiście Chiny odtwarzają pewną fazę rozwoju zachodniego (...)

    The Goodwin Oscillator and its Legacy.Didier Gonze & Peter Ruoff - 2020 - Acta Biotheoretica 69 (4):857-874.
In the 1960’s Brian Goodwin published a couple of mathematical models showing how feedback inhibition can lead to oscillations and discussed possible implications of this behaviour for the physiology of the cell. He also presented key ideas about the rich dynamics that may result from the coupling between such biochemical oscillators. Goodwin’s work motivated a series of theoretical investigations aiming at identifying minimal mechanisms to generate limit cycle oscillations and deciphering design principles of biological oscillators. The three-variable Goodwin model can (...)

Can Induced Reflection Affect Moral Decision-Making?Daniel Spears, Yasmina Okan, Irene Hinojosa-Aguayo, José César Perales, María Ruz & Felisa González - 2021 - Philosophical Psychology 34 (1):28-46.
Evidence about whether reflective thinking may be induced and whether it affects utilitarian choices is inconclusive. Research suggests that answering items correctly in the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) before responding to dilemmas may lead to more utilitarian decisions. However, it is unclear to what extent this effect is driven by the inhibition of intuitive wrong responses (reflection) versus the requirement to engage in deliberative processing. To clarify this issue, participants completed either the CRT or the Berlin Numeracy Test (BNT) – (...)

Pedro Zulen and the Reception of Pragmatism in Peru.Pablo Quintanilla - 2011 - In Gregory Fernando Pappas (ed.), Pragmatism in the Americas. Fordham University Press.
This chapter explores a generation of philosophers that emerged in Peru and became interested in positivism at the end of the nineteenth century. This generation that embraced positivism included Manuel Gonza´lez Prada, Alejandro Deustua, Jorge Polar, Mariano H. Cornejo, Carlos Lisson, Javier Prado, and Manuel Vicente Villara´n. The chapter addresses the interesting parallel that the first consolidated generation of Peruvian philosophers appeared at the end of a tragic and extremely devastating war, similar to the United States in the Civil War (...)

Peter of John Olivi on the Universal Power of the Papacy.Dabney Park - 2016 - Franciscan Studies 74:67-124.
The city of Montpellier on the river Lez was the commercial and intellectual center of the Languedoc in 1289 when Peter of John Olivi made his way back to his home territory of southern France.2 The city was only a few centuries old, with no ties back to Greece or even Rome. The original settlement at Maguelone received an episcopal see as early as the sixth century, but the destruction of the town in the eighth century moved the community upriver (...)
