The impact of regional culture on intensive care end of life decision making: an Israeli perspective from the ETHICUS study.F. D. Ganz - 2006 - Journal of Medical Ethics 32 (4):196-199.
Background: Decisions of patients, families, and health care providers about medical care at the end of life depend on many factors, including the societal culture. A pan-European study was conducted to determine the frequency and types of end of life practices in European intensive care units , including those in Israel. Several results of the Israeli subsample were different to those of the overall sample. Objective: The objective of this article was to explore these differences and provide a possible explanation based (...)

From a Continental Point of View: The Role of Logic in the Analytic-Continental Divide.F. D. Agostini - 2001 - International Journal of Philosophical Studies 9 (3):349-367.
My discussion addresses the differences between analytic and continental philosophy concerning the use of logic and exact reasoning in philosophical practice. These differences are mainly examined in the light of the controversial dominance of Hegel's concept of logic (and theory of concept) in twentieth-century continental philosophy. The inquiry is developed in two parts. In the first (Sections 1-2), I indicate some aspects of the analytic-continental divide, pointing to the role that the topic 'logic and philosophy' plays in it. In the (...)

    Microscale Gaseous Slip Flow in the Insect Trachea and Tracheoles.F. D. Duncan, S. Abelman & S. M. Simelane - 2017 - Acta Biotheoretica 65 (3):211-231.
An analytical investigation into compressible gas flow with slight rarefactions through the insect trachea and tracheoles during the closed spiracle phase is undertaken, and a complete set of asymptotic analytical solutions is presented. We first obtain estimates of the Reynolds and Mach numbers at the channel terminal ends where the tracheoles directly deliver respiratory gases to the cells, by comparing the magnitude of the different forces in the compressible gas flow. The 2D Navier–Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition are (...)

A semi-popular presentation of the ideals of Chinese culture derived from the classics of Taoism, Confucianism, and Mohism. Contrasts between Chinese and Western thought are often suggestive, though the latter receives a highly stylized interpretation.--J. F. D.

    The Meaning of Americanism. [REVIEW]F. D. J. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 10 (4):715-715.
An essay which is occasionally provocative, though somewhat cursory, in its delineation of the American democratic ideal. The author reviews the intellectual contributions of the philosophers of the Enlightenment, the Puritan tradition, ethical idealism and pragmatism to the American political tradition. But these various contributions have provided only a partial expression of the ideal of Americanism. This, the author thinks, is a personalist ethic, issuing in a "democratic personalism." --J. F. D.

Distinguishing genetics and eugenics on the basis of fairness.F. D. Ledley - 1994 - Journal of Medical Ethics 20 (3):157-164.
There is concern that human applications of modern genetic technologies may lead inexorably to eugenic abuse. To prevent such abuse, it is essential to have clear, formal principles as well as algorithms for distinguishing genetics from eugenics. This work identifies essential distinctions between eugenics and genetics in the implied nature of the social contract and the importance ascribed to individual welfare relative to society. Rawls's construction of 'justice as fairness' is used as a model for how a formal systems of (...)

    Organ Markets and the Ends of Medicine.F. D. Davis & S. J. Crowe - 2009 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 34 (6):586-605.
As the gap between the need for and supply of human organs continues to widen, the aim of securing additional sources of these “gifts of the body” has become a seemingly overriding moral imperative, one that could—and some argue, should—override the widespread ban on organ markets. As a medical practice, organ transplantation entails the inherent risk that one human being, a donor, will become little more than a means to the end of healing for another human being and that he (...)

    The Unifying Moment. [REVIEW]F. D. D. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 26 (2):356-356.
The Unifying Moment provides a fine comparative study of Whitehead and James. Eisendrath expresses the presupposition of his effort in noting "a fruitful complementarity" between his subjects: "Whitehead is highly abstract and needs the exemplification which reference to James can provide. Conversely, Whitehead can be used to show the full sweep of general application implicit in James’s ideas." The core of Eisendrath’s analysis lies in creativity and in the ‘aesthetic’ bias shared by Whitehead and James; experience is feeling, appetition and (...)

This final work of the late Prof. Brightman was virtually complete at his death; however the editors have written four additional chapters and part of a fifth, basing their work on other writings of the author. The result is a lucid, unified account of the personalist position.--J. F. D.

    The Civilization of Experience. [REVIEW]F. D. D. - 1974 - Review of Metaphysics 28 (1):122-123.
Hall seeks to develop "a theory of culture through the analogical extension of certain of Whitehead’s concepts and theories." His concern in this essay is not simply to systematize Whitehead’s remarks about cultural history, but rather to elaborate a comprehensive philosophy of culture in the light of his metaphysical structures. Hall accordingly presents a brief and adequate summary of Whitehead’s metaphysical scheme in terms of its "primary analogate" in the aesthetic event, and then proceeds to explicate the cultural theme throughout (...)
