Equimetrical translation of verse, which conveys the metre of the source text, should be distinguished from equiprosodic translation of verse, which conveys theversification system of the source text. Equiprosodic translation of verse can rely on the possibilities of natural language (for instance, when presumably Publius Baebius Italicus created the Ilias Latina, he made use of the quantitative structure in Latin), but it can also employ an artificial system (cf., for example, the quantitative verse in Church Slavonic or English). The (...) class='Hi'>Estonian language makes it possible to convey the syllabic (based on the number of syllables), accentual (based on the number and configuration of accents) and quantitative (based on the configuration of durations) versification systems. In practice, combined types are most frequent, for instance, the ones in which both the syllable count and the configuration of accents is relevant; in Estonian, versification systems with theparticipation of all three principles are possible as well. Despite the contrast of quantity in Estonian, the transmission of the quantitative structure of ancient metrics still involves a number of difficulties which result from differences in the prosodic structures. The transmission of purely syllabic versification system has also been problematic: it is hard to perceive such structure as verse in Estonian and therefore it has often been conveyed with the help of different syllabic-accentual or accentual-syllabic verse metres. Interaction between humans and cats in urban environments is subject to dynamic change. Based on the frequency and quality of relations with humans, we can distinguish several populations of domestic cats : pedigree, pet, semi-feral, feral, and pseudo-wild. Bringing together theoretical perspectives of the Tartu school of biosemiotics and ethological studies of animal societies, we distinguish two basic types of cat cultures: the culture of street cats and the humano-cat culture of pets. The difference between these cultures is documented on (...) the level of zoosemiotic interactions, ecological relations, and human representations. We introduce a threefold model of human-animal interactions in urban environments which steer a careful course between the Scylla of realistic ontology and the Charybdis of social constructivism. A case study on Estonian cat shelters illustrates the significance of cultural representations and institutionalized actions in human-cat cohabitation. (shrink)

This article analyses the online communication of the Estonian extreme right that appears to be characterized by an echo-chamber effect as well as enclosed and hermetic meaning-making. The discussion mainly relies on the theoretical frameworks offered by semiotics of culture.One of the aims of the article is to widen the scope of understanding of autocommunicative processes that are usually related to learning, insight and innovation. The article shows the conditions in which autocommunicative processes result in closed interactions, based on (...) reproducing stereotypes and redundant content. We detect antithetical meaning-making, an orientation towards normative (“correct”) texts and the prevalence of phatic communication as the main dominants that guide closed autocommunication. Such communication leads to polarization of dissimilar views and hinders dialogue. Our case study focuses on the discussion that arose in the context of the European Refugee Crisis that started in spring 2015. (shrink)

The article observes how critical times, conditioned by events concurrent with Soviet power and World War II, are currently reflected in life histories of newly independent Estonia. Oral history analysis comprises texts from southern Läänemaa: oral life history interview (2005), written responses to the Estonian National Museum’s questionnaire “The 1949 Deportation, Life as a Deportee” (1999) and a written life history sent to the Estonian Literary Museum’s relevant competition “One Hundred Lives of a Century” (1999). Aiming at historic (...) context, materials from the Estonian Historical Archives and Läänemaa County Archives have been used. The treatment focuses on two issues. First, whether oral and written narratives only differ by the form of presentation or do they also convey different messages (ideologies). Secondly, whether memories and history documents solely complement each other or do they more essentially alter the imaginations obtained from the events. The public is presented with experience narratives on coping under difficult circumstances, both at practical and mental levels. Narratives are presented from a certain standpoint, pursuant to narrators’ convictions, with the main message remaining the same in different presentations. The addition of history sources enables to better observe the evolving of narrative tradition (narration rules) and highlight new questions (hidden in the narrative). (shrink)

Present article tries to give insight into the ways in which Estonian haiku models its author and communicates with the reader. The author thinks that while Japanese haiku is a predominantly autocommunicative piece of literature, where even a fixed point of view is not recommended, Estonian literary conventions are oriented towards openly communicational texts, which convey a fixed axiology and rely on abundant use of pronouns and rhetorical questions, addresses and apostrophes. While there is a considerable amount of (...) Estonian haiku that depend on Estonian literary conventions, most of the Estonian haiku texts, however, are oriented to the Japanese model. These texts have been labelled “the catalogues of landscape”, as they are constituted by naming different landscape objects without developing a line of narration. Thereby every landscape element in poetry is granted its own voice, and through this multitude of voices inside the text, the reader is forced to enter an autocommunicative process of remodelling him/herself. We want to complement the prevalent approaches to nationality (Anderson 1983; Gellner 1983; Bhabha 1990), where the role of theatre and film as modellers of national identity are undervalued. National identity is a complex term that presupposes some clarification, which we gave by describing its dynamics today; its relation to ethnic identity, a thread between the lived and declared national identities, (...) and the relevance of culture-based national identity. Herein we consider the concept of staging to have two implications: (1) as an aesthetic term it incorporates an artistic process, comprising several devices and levels; (2) as a concept in cultural theory it describes cultural processes in which something is set on stage for public reflection. Accordingly, in our analysis we considered national identities in theatre and film stagings in both senses. The results of our analyses demonstrated that our hypothesis about emerging new national identities in Estonia was valid, though deconstructed and hybrid national identities are not exactly and absolutely new types of identities but rather strategies of creating space for new identities to develop. A deconstructed national identity refers to the state of high self-reflexivity in which the existing elements of national identity are re-examined, recontextualised and re-evaluated. Further, a hybrid national identity demonstrates the diversity and coexistence of the components of national identity. Both strategies of staging are characteristic of the transformation of national identities, confirming that a single homogenous staging of national identity seems to be replaced by bringing multiple new self-models on stage. The author concentrates on the period of approximately 1960–1990, when he himself was engaged in the field, i.e. the time before 1960 is not included. The aim of this paper is not to provide an overview of the individual (...) philosophers in Estonia at the time and their works, but to give a more general description of the philosophy of the Soviet era. The Soviet and the East European philosophy of the time have received rather little critical treatment in literature in English. However, a few general overviews trying to prove that this Soviet and East European philosophical legacy is worth studying have still been published. This paper is focused on the question what kind of philosophical researches it was possible to engage oneself in under the abnormal conditions at the time and whether some starting points and problem issues in theseresearches might be viable also today. Estonian experience confirms the general conclusion of these authors who, analyzing the legacy of Marxism, have found that although Marxism is nowadays—not to mention how it existed in the Soviet totalitarian regime—mainly not considered a serious philosophy but rather an ideological basis of a failed political doctrine, it has nevertheless quite something to offer when treated in a more depoliticized manner, in the general context of philosophical quests. Grundlage des vorliegenden Aufsatzes ist ein auf der IV. Jahreskonferenz der Estnischen Philosophie am 6. Mai 2008 gehaltener teilweise erinnerungsbildlicher Vortrag. Der Vortrag bietet einen verhältnismäss ig ganzheitlichen und überblickartigen Einblick in die Forschung und Lehre des Fachs Philosophie in Estland während der sogenannten Sowjetzeit in den Jahren 1940/41 und 1944 bis 1991. Genauere Aufgabe des Vortragenden resp. Verfassers war eine Charakterisierung der vorherigen Forschung und Lehre vom Standpunkt der Philosophiegeschichte, der Ästhetik und der Übersetzung philosophischer Werke her. Nach der (...) Besetzung Estlands im Jahre 1940 wurde sowohl die Universitätsstudium als auch Wissenschaft, darunter auch die Lehre und gesamte Forschungstätigkeit auf dem Gebiet der Philosophie an der Universität Tartu einer strengen ideologisch-politischen Kontrolle unterworfen, um sowohl organisatorisch als auch inhaltlich die groben ideologisch-politischen Ziele der neuen Macht zu verwirklichen. Diese Richtung wurde nach der neuen sowjetischen Besetzung Estlands 1944 fortgesetzt. Gewisse Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten für die freieren Philosophieunterricht und entsprechenden Untersuchungstätigkeit, die man auch maximal zu benutzen versuchte, eröffneten sich nach dem Stalins Tode in Jahren 1953-1956. Allmählich bildete sich an der Universität Tartu auch eine nationale Kerngruppe der estnischsprachigen Philosophie-Lehrer und -Forscher, dank dem und denen konnte man in Jahren der neuen Befreiung Estlands 1987-1991, fast problemlos zur freien Philosophieunterricht als Fach und philosophischen Forschung in der im ideologisch-politischen Sinne freien Atmosphäre überzugehen. Der Verfasser belegt das durch reichliches faktisches Material. This article is based on a presentation held on the 4th Annual Conference of Estonian Philosophy on May 6th 2008. The article presents a comprehensive overview of teaching and research in philosophy during the Soviet occupation in 1940-1941 and 1944-1991. It focuses on history of philosophy, aesthetics and translation of philosophical literature. After Estonia was occupied in 1940, higher education and research, including teaching and researching philosophy in the University of Tartu, were substantially submitted to the rough ideological-political purposes of the new rule. This path continued from the year 1944, when Estonia was occupied again. Some kind of new more-or-less free possibilities and expectancies for teaching philosophy and doing research became available in years 1953-1956 after the death of Stalin. Slowly begun the formation of the cadre of Estonian teachers and researchers of philosophy. Gradually philosophy became a separate speciality in the University of Tartu and during the years 1987--1991 teaching and research became free from ideological and political pressure.
