Development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been described completely on a cell‐by‐cell basis. In an invariant pattern five somatic founder cells and the primordial germ cell are generated within the first hour after the onset of cleavage. Using a laser microbeam for manipulation of individual blastomers several aspects of early embryogenesis have been investigated, including the expression of cellular polarity, the localization of lineage‐specific cleavage potential, the necessity for early cell–cell interaction, and the control of differential cell‐cycle timing. The (...) experiments demonstrate the central importance of a correct partitioning of cytoplasmic components during early embryogenesis and suggest a stepwise, binary segregation mechanism associated with the unequal cleavages in the germline. Comparative analysis of nematode development has revealed considerable variations in how the fates of embryonic cells are specified. Such early variations seem enigmatic as they do not influence the resultant structure or performance of the emerging animal. Three different nematode species are used to consider why alternative ways to reach the same goal may have been established during evolution and why early steps of embryogenesis are particularly variable. A scenario is sketched with a shift from late to early cell specification, (...) along with an increase in maternal contribution and developmental tempo and a decrease in regulative potential expressing different developmental strategies. Future studies of larger numbers of species are needed to assess the extent of such variations and to understand more fully the under lying mechanisms, rules and driving forces. Es geht um Carnaps Konstitution der Qualitätsklassen (qual) mittels der Methode der Quasianalyse. Diese Konstitutionsmethode hat Carnap in seinem Werk Der logische Außau der Welt verwendet. Es wird gezeigt, daß Carnaps Qualitätsdefinition sowohl an technischen als auch an grundsätzlichen Mängeln scheitert. Des weiteren werden Verbesserungsvorschläge der Camapschen Methode, die von Brockhaus, Goodman, Moulines und Eberle gemacht worden sind, untersucht und als inadäquat nachgewiesen.

Im folgenden Beitrag wird ein neuartiger Vorschlag zur Lösung des Antinomienproblems untersucht. Die Untersuchung ergibt, daß der Vorschlag in toto untauglich ist. Weiterhin wird die Unhaltbarkeit gewisser Argumente gegen den Beweis des ersten Gödelschen Unvollständigkeitstheorems nachgewiesen.

In many of his writings Russell developed a theory of time, highly interesting both from a philosophical and from a logical point of view. Strangely enough, this has not acquired general attention. The most important relational properties of the duration and points of time will be presented. In addition, Russell's considerations on the existence and density of time points will be critically analysed and systematically reconstructed. A. G. Walker's explication of the concept of time point is unlike that of Russell. (...) His theory of time reflects the Dedekindian concept of cut. Dabei geht es vor allem um die Frage, welche logischen Voraussetzungen erforderlich sind, um derartige Reihen formal zu explizieren.Im ersten Teil wird Körners Auffassung untersucht, wonach die klassische, zweiwertige Logik keine adäquate Explikationsbasis für Qualitätsreihen darstellt. Körner bezieht sich dabei besonders auf den Begriff der empirischen Vagheit und den der empirischen Kontinuität. Es (...) wird gezeigt, daß Körners Position infolge zahlreicher logischer Schwierigkeiten zur Lösung der vorliegenden Probleme nicht ausreicht.Im zweiten Teil geht es hauptsächlich um Russells Zeittheorie. Photography – a novel medium of scientific representation in the XIXth century array of arts and sciences. To delve into various nineteenth century academic disciplines under the heading ‘photography in the arts and sciences’ as did last year's annual conference of the History of Science Society – the interest in such a topic only partly stems from the ‘iconic turn’ that has generally enlarged the scope of the social sciences in recent years. A more poignant feature in any such present (...) day study will probably be a basic scepticism facing the fact that in public use photographs have been manipulated in many respects.Yet, while shying away from any simple success story, a historically minded approach to changing ‘visual paradigms’ has begun to emerge. In this context, it has proved of considerable heuristic value to reconsider the role of early photography in an array of science, arts and technology: Since the reliance on the traditional ways of sketching reality persisted, in many an instance where photography was introduced, the thoughts the pioneer photographers had about their new, seemingly automated business, call for close attention. Thus scholarship sets up a parallel ‘discussion room’; the lively debate on the benefit of academic drawings as opposed to photographic portraits is a case in point.Some fairly specialised reports on photographically based analyses, such as electron microscopy, point to a borderline where the very idea of representation as a correspondence of reality and imagination gets blurred. Even though any ‘visual culture’ will have to shoulder the ‘burden of representation’, it is equally likely that it will offer a deeper sensibility for the intricacies entailed in the variegated ways of illustrating or mapping chosen subjects of scientific interest. Scholarship may thus somewhat control the disillusionment that by now has become the epitome of writing on photographic history. Provided with a renewed methodological awareness for the perception process and its photographic transition, historians may strike a better balance between the ever present tendencies of a realistic and an aesthetic way of picturing the world we live in.
