The fact that there is such a thing as a degree of formedness [Gestaltung], that every Gestalt has a certain Gestalt level, is of fundamental significance. A rose is a Gestalt of higher level than a heap of sand: this we recognize just as immediately as that red is a fuller, more lively colour than grey. This is the first publication and critical edition of Christian von Ehrenfels' dissertation on "Relations of Magnitude and Numbers. A Psychological Study", based on a new transcription by Reinhard Fabian.

These five letters from Christian von Ehrenfels to Alexius Meinong contain a written record of how Ehrenfels' dissertation plans came about, based on his reading and commenting on Meinong's work.

The theory of Gestalt qualities arose from the attempt to explain how a melody is distinct from the collection of the tones which it comprehends. In this essay from 1890 Christian von Ehrenfels coined the term 'Gestaltqualität' to capture the idea of a pattern which is comprehensible in a single experience. This idea can be applied not only to melodies and other occurrent patterns, but also to continuant patterns such as shapes and colour arrays such as the array (...) of a chess board. Ehrenfel's essay gave birth to the Gestalt movement in psychology. (shrink)

Der österreichische Philosoph Christian von Ehrenfels gilt als "Vater der Gestaltpsychologie". Mit seiner Studie "Über Gestaltqualitäten" legte er die Basis für die Gestaltpsychologie als neuer wissenschaftlicher Disziplin, wirkte aber auch befruchtend auf anderen philosophischen Gebieten. Er verfasste Schriften zu Werttheorie und Ästhetik, Psychologie, Ethik und Erkenntnistheorie und später intensiv zu metaphysischen Themen. Daneben war er auch Dichter und schrieb als leidenschaftlicher Wagnerianer Opernlibretti und andere dramatische Werke, die häufig als Sprachrohr für seine sozial- und sexualreformerischen Ideen dienten. Der (...) Band vereinigt Beiträge, die einleitend der Entwicklung, sowie ontologischen und metaphysischen Aspekten des Gestaltbegriffs gewidmet sind, mit Studien, die die werttheoretischen und sozialphilosophischen Implikationen von Ehrenfels' Philosophie behandeln. Beleuchtet werden weiters die Möglichkeiten und Konsequenzen, die die Einführung des Gestaltbegriffs für Ästhetik und Kunstontologie mit sich bringt. Abgerundet wird der Band durch die kommentierte Erstveröffentlichung von Ehrenfels' Dissertation, die als Vorstufe für die spätere Entwicklung des Gestaltbegriffes anzusehen ist. (shrink)

Christian von Ehrenfels was a student of both Franz Brentano and Carl Menger and his thinking on value theory was inspired both by Brentano’s descriptive psychology and by the subjective theory of economic value advanced by Menger, the founder of the Austrian school of economics. Value, for Ehrenfels, is a function of desire, and we ascribe value to those things which we either do in fact desire, or would desire if we were not convinced of their existence. (...) He asserts that the needed theoretical understanding of values is to be achieved by generalizing economic laws of valuation to apply to value in general. The law of marginal utility, for example, is a law to the effect that the n+1st sample of a good which I receive is ceteris paribus less valuable than the nth sample (imagine that the samples in question are, for example, a series of identical ham sandwiches). The essay describes how Ehrenfels provides on this basis an account of the different types of values, both intrinsic and non-intrinsic. It outlines also Ehrenfels views on the problem of interpersonal value-comparisons and on the struggle for survival between different values of different types. (shrink)

The present article provides a critical analysis of Christian von Ehrenfels’ dissertation Über Grössenrelationen und Zahlen. Eine psychologische Studie. As many other students of Brentano, Ehrenfels engaged repeatedly with the philosophy of mathematics, but until now his dissertation remained nearly completely unknown. Ehrenfels’ dissertation, however, fits perfectly within the Brentanist philosophy of mathematics and actually occupies an important place therein, precisely because it occurs outside of the vertical master - student lineage that goes from Brentano via (...) Stumpf to Husserl. Indeed, Ehrenfels dissertation shows many parallels and anticipations to Husserl’s early works in the philosophy of mathematics. (shrink)

Der Aufsatz stellt Ehrenfels’ Schönheitsbegriff als den eigentlichen Gegenstand der Ästhetik dar. Gegen den ästhetischen Skeptizismus, nach dem wir die Schönheit Gegenständen zuschreiben, die sich sehr voneinander unterscheiden und nur den Namen „schön“ gemein haben, behauptet Ehrenfels, dass nicht die äußeren physischen Gegenstände schön sind, sondern die Phantasiegebilde, die von jenen hervorgerufen werden. Es gebe eine absolute Schönheit als „Einheit in der Mannigfaltigkeit“, die in jedem „wahrhaft schönen“ Gegenstand der Kunst oder der Natur enthalten sei und jedem Menschen (...) „unbedingt wohlgefallen müsse“. Christian von Ehrenfels (1859–1932) was a student of Franz Brentano and Alexius Meinong. The topic of this paper is Ehrenfels’ relation to Brentano, in particular Brentano’s influence on his philosophical work. After a sketch of Ehrenfels’ most important contributions to philosophy (which belong to the fields of philosophical psychology and value theory), I present those passages within Ehrenfels’ work in which he explicitly deals with Brentano. These concern, in particular, Brentano’s theory of love and hate (...) as well as his theory of intensity and his theory of preferring and adequate emotions. (shrink)

Eine ausgearbeitete Kunstontologie findet sich bei Ehrenfels nicht, wohl aber Bausteine zu einer solchen. Diese herauszuarbeiten ist das Anliegen des vorliegenden Beitrags. Dabei geht es um die Frage nach dem ontologischen Status von Kunstwerken, um mögliche kategoriale Einteilungen derselben, um Bestandteile und Identitätsbedingungen. Ehrenfels vertritt die Auffassung, dass nicht materielle Entitäten, sondern „Vorstellungskomplexe“ Träger ästhetischer Eigenschaften sind. Ich argumentiere, dass Ehrenfels die Auffassung zugeschrieben werden kann, dass Kunstwerke nicht mit materiellen Gegenständen, sondern mit Vorstellungskomplexen zu identifizieren sind. (...) Im Weiteren wird die Frage diskutiert, ob die Vorstellungskomplexe als mentale Entitäten im engeren Sinn aufzufassen sind (d. h. als Entitäten, die in jedem Moment ihrer Existenz von Bewusstseinsvorgängen ontologisch abhängig sind) oder ob sie von Bewusstseinsvorgängen unabhängige Existenz haben können. Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage wird ein wenig beachteter Text zur Gestalttheorie herangezogen, der eine überraschende Antwort nahe legt. Was die Frage nach den Bestandteilen betrifft, lässt sich aus Ehrenfels’ Schriften die Auffassung extrahieren, dass Kunstwerke aus Gestalten bestehen, die entweder durch sinnliche Qualitäten oder durch Psychisches fundiert sein können. Ich zeige zudem, dass Ehrenfels eine differenzierte Auffassung bezüglich der Identitätsbedingungen von Kunstwerken vertritt: In erster Linie sind die konstituierenden Gestalten identitätsrelevant, doch es können auch Kontexte und Funktionen eine Rolle spielen.
