Qu'en est-il de la philosophie élaborée par quelqu'un, Augustin, qui finit par rompre avec la philosophie ? Et qu'en est-il du mode de partage entre positions philosophiques et positions religieuses ? L'étude du cas particulier des relations d'Augustin avec le scepticisme académicien permet à la fois de poser ces questions et celles qui leur sont afférentes, et d'y répondre. À partir de l'étude du livre V des Confessions, puis de la présentation de la doctrine académicienne par Cicéron, E. Dubreucq (...) précise ce que furent les relations d'Augustin avec ce scepticisme académicien fait de doute fondamental dans le rapport à la vérité avec, pour risque, le désespoir dont l'auteur des Confessions fit l'expérience. Dans l'itinéraire augustinien, les doctrines académiciennes et néoplatoniciennes ne servent que de temps intermédiaire dans la quête de l'union au Christ auquel elles étaient finalement orientées. What can be said about the philosophy elaborated by some one like Augustine, who ended up by breaking with philosophy ? What can be said about the mode of separation between philosophical and religious positions ? A study of the particular case of Augustine’s relationship with academic scepticism permits us both to ask these questions and others related to them, and to answer them. Starting with a study of book V of the Confessions, followed by a presentation of academic doctrine by Cicero, E. Dubreucq explains what Augustine’s relationship was with this academic scepticism, a fundamental doubt of fact in the rapport to truth, with, as a risk, the despair which the author of the Confessions experienced. In the Augustinian itinerary, academic and Neoplatonic doctrines only serve as an intermediary time in the search for union with Christ, to which they were finally oriented. (shrink)

C’est à une opération de (...) production de soi que l’exercice spirituel donne lieu : l’analyse des quatre premières Méditations chrétiennes et métaphysiques, en particulier, montre que c’est une organisation de la substance personnelle que provoque le travail spirituel sur soi. Augustin a commencé de s'intéresser aux questions de l'âme, de sa nature, de son origine et de son destin sous le double horizon des croyances manichéennes, auxquelles le tenait attaché son obsession du problème du mal et du salut, et des doctrines néoplatoniciennes, en qui il trouvait une certaine parenté avec la spiritualité chrétienne. Le néoplatonisme l'aidait à concevoir l'immortalité de l'âme, mais en rejetant sa consubstantialité avec Dieu, à écarter aussi le dualisme manichéen tout en professant la dualité ontologique (...) de Dieu et du créé, et de l’âme et du corps. Mais l'Écriture se dissocie du platonisme quand elle montre que l'âme ne peut pas remonter par ses seules forces jusqu'au vrai et au bien et qu'elle a besoin du secours de la grâce et des sacrements. L'Écriture érige des réalités d'ordre sotériologique étrangères aux spéculations des philosophes, elle fait du péché une réalité originelle et universelle, dont la transmission relance la question de l'origine des âmes : préexistantes, ou créées à la naissance ou issues de celles des parents ? Augustin noue ainsi l'une à l'autre les deux questions de l'origine du mal et de celle de l'âme, notamment dans le troisième livre du traité Du libre arbitre, entre 391 et 395. Il pense que ni l'Écriture ni la philosophie ne permettent de trancher entre le créationisme et le traducianisme, mais il s'efforce de concilier, sans y parvenir tout à fait, le plan anthropologique avec le plan sotériologique. Augustine began his interest in the nature, origin, and destiny of the soul under the double influence of Manichaean beliefs , and Neoplatonic doctrines, in which be found a certain relation with Christian spirituality. Neoplatonism helped him to conceive the immortality of the soul, but by rejecting its consubstantiality with God, and also to set aside Manichaean dualism while professing the ontological duality of God and the created, as well as the soul and body. But Scripture disassociates itself from Platonism when it shows that the soul cannot, by its own power, arise to the true and the good, but needs help from grace and the sacraments. Scripture builds its realities around soteriology, which is foreign to the speculations of philosophers. It makes sin an original and universal reality, whose transmission brings up again the origin of souls : pre-existent, created at birth, or issuing from those of its parents ? Augustine thus ties together the two questions of the origin of evil and that of souls, especially in the third book of the treatise On Free Will . He thought that neither Scripture nor philosophy helped to decide for creationism and traducianism, but he made an effort to reconcile, without complete success, the anthropological dimension with the soteriological dimension. Il est nécessaire pour cela de partir de l’étude des fragments manuscrits et d’une réflexion sur la méthode permettant d’en obtenir une lecture, et d’en produire des copies figurées. Sur cette base, il est possible de montrer que l’intériorité pascalienne se (...) définit comme désertée par la présence divine : le fond du coeur est dans "l’homme sans Dieu" un gouffre infini et la connaissance de soi une saisie de son néant propre. Pour Durkheim, la religion est la clé utilisée pour déverrouiller ces deux problématiques.Dans ce livre, Durkheim argumente que les représentations religieuses sont en fait des représentations collectives : l'essence du religieux ne peut être que le sacré. Il est une caractéristique qui se trouve universellement (...) dans toutes les religions. Le sacré, être collectif et impersonnel, représente ainsi la société elle-même. Ensuite il argumente que la société a un impact majeur dans la genèse de la pensée logique. There is a long tradition in philosophy and literary theory defending the view that engagement with literature promotes readers’ empathy. Until the last century, few of the empirical claims adduced in that tradition were investigated experimentally. Recent work in psychology and neuropsychology has now shed new light on the interplay of empathy and literature. This article surveys the experimental findings, addressing three central questions: What is it to read empathically? Does reading make us more empathic? What characteristics of literature, if (...) any, affect readers’ empathy? While experimental studies have delivered no conclusive answers to these questions, it has exposed their psychological complexity and constructed a more nuanced picture of the diverse ways in which literature interacts with our empathic capacities. When we perceive an object, we perceive the object from a perspective. As a consequence of the perspectival nature of perception, when we perceive, say, a circular coin from different angles, there is a respect in which the coin looks circular throughout, but also a respect in which the coin's appearance changes. More generally, perception of shape and size properties has both a constant aspect—an aspect that remains stable across changes in perspective—and a perspectival aspect—an aspect that changes depending on (...) one's perspective on the object. How should we account for the perspectival aspect of spatial perception? We present a framework within which to discuss the perspectival aspect of perception and put forward three desiderata that any account of the perspectival aspect of perception should satisfy. We discuss views on which the perspectival aspect of perception is analyzed in terms of constitutively mind-dependent appearance properties as well as views on which the perspectival aspect of perception is analyzed in terms of representations of mind-independent perspectival properties. We argue that the trend toward providing users with feasible and actionable explanations of AI decisions—known as recourse explanations—comes with ethical downsides. Specifically, we argue that recourse explanations face several conceptual pitfalls and can lead to problematic explanation hacking, which undermines their ethical status. As an alternative, we advocate that explanations of AI decisions should aim at understanding.

In his Treatise, Hume confronted the tensions between his project of uncovering the causal operations of the human mind and the extreme skeptical tendencies of his system. Louis Loeb argues that Hume overreaches, and he advances a controversial interpretation of Hume's epistemological framework that shows how Hume could have avoided the more destructive positions in his work.

Hume's claim that a state is a belief is often intertwined—though without his remarking on this fact—with epistemic approval of the state. This requires explanation. Beliefs, in Hume's view, are steady dispositions (not lively ideas), nature's provision for a steady influence on the will and action. Hume's epistemic distinctions call attention to circumstances in which the presence of conflicting beliefs undermine a belief's influence and thereby its natural function. On one version of this interpretation, to say that a belief is (...) justified, ceteris paribus, is to say that for all that has been shown the belief would be steady in its influence under suitable reflection. On a second version, it is to say that prima facie justification is an intrinsic property of the state, in virtue of its steadiness. These versions generate different understandings of the relationship between Parts iii and iv of Book I of the Treatise. (shrink)

" doit être rapporté à un " jugement de soi-même " attestant pour chacun sa propre normalité. Dès lors, l'humain ne peut coïncider avec l'institution du politique qu'à la condition de se retrancher de soi-même, dans la forme des " différences anthropologiques ". This article critically reflects on the research portfolio by the ecological economist Clive Spash who has helped pinpoint specific and systemic blindspots in a political-economic system that prioritises myopic development trajectories divorced from ecological reality. Drawing on his published work and collaborations it seeks to make sense of the slow, or absent, progress in averting global warming and ecological destruction. Three strands of key concern and influence are identified and discussed with reference to their orientation and explicit expression regarding Ontology, (...) Epistemology and Axiology. Some complementary points about indeterminacy and holism are presented to further strengthen the arguments for a transition towards a social-ecological economic system that puts values and principles back into focus. While Clive Spash's work has made a strong case within the economic community and appealing to ecology professionals, the value-myopia or value-vacuum has to be tackled across all disciplines, politics and society for a meaningful and urgently required transformation in decision making. Hence, the article finishes with some suggestions for the (higher) education system, and highlights the importance of simplicity and sufficiency, as well as strong sustainability-driven citizen and community action as necessary catalysts of change in this social-ecological transformation. Shared reality is crucial to what we believe--sharing is believing. It is central to our sense of self, what we strive for and how we strive. It is basic to how we get along with others. It brings us together in fellowship (...) and companionship, but it also tears us apart by creating in-group "bubbles" that conflict with one another.
