    A pre-epistemology of consciousness.E. Bouratinos - 2003 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 10 (12):38-41.
Max Velmans' target article and response to commentaries in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Vol. 9, No. 11, 2002, can be seen as something of a milestone in the history of consciousness studies. In them he takes this elusive subject to the limits of rational discussion. Through exhaustive analysis and theorizing, he fills the gaps in our understanding of the multifaceted mind-brain issue. On the one hand, he establishes the mutual irreducibility of the two. On the other, he elucidates their (...)

    Einstein meets Magritte.E. Bouratinos - 1995 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 2 (4):374-375.
Scientists, theoreticians, academics and people involved in the arts, representing every possible discipline, paradigm and attitude, assembled in Brussels between 29 May and 3 June 1995 for a conference entitled Einstein meets Magritte: An interdisciplinary reflection on science, human action and society. With such a title, it is not surprising that the event developed into a most stimulating meeting of minds. There is hardly a precedent for so many different viewpoints provoking such high-quality responses with such stimulating results for so (...)

When we perceive an object, we perceive the object from a perspective. As a consequence of the perspectival nature of perception, when we perceive, say, a circular coin from different angles, there is a respect in which the coin looks circular throughout, but also a respect in which the coin's appearance changes. More generally, perception of shape and size properties has both a constant aspect—an aspect that remains stable across changes in perspective—and a perspectival aspect—an aspect that changes depending on (...)

We argue that the trend toward providing users with feasible and actionable explanations of AI decisions—known as recourse explanations—comes with ethical downsides. Specifically, we argue that recourse explanations face several conceptual pitfalls and can lead to problematic explanation hacking, which undermines their ethical status. As an alternative, we advocate that explanations of AI decisions should aim at understanding.

Philosophy of the Anthropocene: the human turn.Sverre Raffnsøe - 2016 - Hampshire, UK: Palgrave-Macmillan.
The Anthropocene is heralded as a new epoch distinguishing itself from all foregoing eons in the history of the Earth. It is characterized by the overarching importance of the human species in a number of respects, but also by the recognition of human dependence and precariousness. A critical human turn affecting the human condition is still in the process of arriving in the wake of an initial Copernican Revolution and Kant's ensuing second Copernican Counter-revolution. Within this landscape, issues concerning the (...)

Reason and revelation in the middle ages.Étienne Gilson - 1938 - New York,: C. Scribner's sons. Edited by James K. Farge & William J. Courtenay.
Etienne Gilson Reason and Revelation in the Middle Ages, first delivered as the Richard Lectures in 1937, was published in 1938 and became an immediate success. Not only does it contribute to a major question of debate in Christian, Jewish, and Islamic philosophy and religion in the medieval period but it also insists on the validity of truth obtainable through reason as well as revelation, on rational argument alongside religious faith. This message is as important in the twenty-first century as (...)

Shared Reality: What Makes Us Strong and Tears Us Apart.E. Tory Higgins - 2019 - Oup Usa.
What makes us human is our special motivation to share with others how we feel, what we believe, and what we want to happen in the future. We want to share with others what is real about the world. Shared reality is crucial to what we believe--sharing is believing. It is central to our sense of self, what we strive for and how we strive. It is basic to how we get along with others. It brings us together in fellowship (...)

Jeffrey E. Brower presents and explains the hylomorphic conception of the material world developed by Thomas Aquinas, according to which material objects are composed of both matter and form. In addition to presenting and explaining Aquinas's views, Brower seeks wherever possible to bring them into dialogue with the best recent literature on related topics. Along the way, he highlights the contribution that Aquinas's views make to a host of contemporary metaphysical debates, including the nature of change, composition, material constitution, the (...)

Guerres et capital.Éric Alliez - 2016 - Paris: Éditions Amsterdam. Edited by Maurizio Lazzarato.

III. Basic Emotions, Complex Emotions, Machiavellian Emotions.Paul E. Griffiths - 2003 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Supplement 52:39-67.
According to the distinguished philosopher Richard Wollheim, an emotion is an extended mental episode that originates when events in the world frustrate or satisfy a pre-existing desire (Wollheim, 1999). This leads the subject to form an attitude to the world which colours their future experience, leading them to attend to one aspect of things rather than another, and to view the things they attend to in one light rather than another. The idea that emotions arise from the satisfaction or frustration (...)
