Scientific Beliefs About Oneself: Donald MacKay.Donald MacKay - 1970 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Supplement 4:48-63.
In the never-ending debate about the scope and limits of science, the hottest argument now centres on the scientific study of man himself. Can there be a science of man at all, in any comprehensive sense? Or is the idea in some way ultimately self-defeating, like that of pulling oneself up by one's own shoelaces? My purpose in this paper is not to venture a direct answer to this ticklish question, but rather to highlight one or two desirable characteristics of (...)

    Donald MacKay's Final Lectures—the Gifford Lectures.Michael J. Rulon - 1997 - Philosophical Psychology 10 (4):517 – 521.
Delivered only months before his death, the Gifford Lectures allowed Donald MacKay to clarify and to emphasize his views on many important issues. MacKay stressed the primacy of personal experience and the differences between persons, brains, and machines. These positions are reviewed here, as are some of the reasons why MacKay may remain relatively unknown among American psychologists, philosophers, and neuroscientists.

  16. Motivation, Behavior, and Emotional Health: An Everyman's Interpretation.Donald MacKay Wonderly - 1991 - Upa.
In this text, the authors propose an emotional health model based on a philosophical and psychological interpretation of human behavioral motivation which departs from traditional approaches in certain aspects while retaining other elements that seem meaningful. The model is predicated on the thesis that at least part of the reason for the current state of affairs is that educational and mental health institutions have been developed on the basis of misleading assumptions about the causes of behavior. Popular assumptions regarding human (...)

    Relations Between Emotion, Memory Encoding, and Time Perception.Laura W. Johnson & Donald G. MacKay - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 33 (2):185-196.
ABSTRACTThis study examined duration judgments for taboo and neutral words in prospective and retrospective timing tasks. In the prospective task, participants attended to time from the beginning and generated shorter duration estimates for taboo than neutral words and for words that they subsequently recalled in a surprise free recall task. These findings suggested that memory encoding took priority over estimating durations, directing attention away from time and causing better recall but shorter perceived durations for taboo than neutral words. However, in (...)

Reconsidering Scarce Drug Rationing: Implications for Clinical Research.Zev M. Nakamura, Douglas P. MacKay, Arlene M. Davis, Elizabeth R. Brassfield, Benny L. Joyner Jr & Donald L. Rosenstein - 2021 - Journal of Medical Ethics 47 (12):16-16.
Hospital systems commonly face the challenge of determining just ways to allocate scarce drugs during national shortages. There is no standardised approach of how this should be instituted, but principles of distributive justice are commonly used so that patients who are most likely to benefit from the drug receive it. As a result, clinical indications, in which the evidence for the drug is assumed to be established, are often prioritised over research use. In this manuscript, we present a case of (...)
