It is argued that medical science requires a classificatory system that (a) puts functions in the taxonomic center and (b) does justice ontologically to the difference between the processes which are the realizations of functions and the objects which are their bearers. We propose formulae for constructing such a system and describe some of its benefits. The arguments are general enough to be of interest to all the life sciences.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer Aufsatz stellt einen neuen Ansatz zur Klrung des Leib-Seele-Problems vor. Zu diesem Zweck wird eine Brcke vom Leib-Seele-Problem zu Peter Knauers Entwurf einer relationalen Ontologie geschlagen, welche die Geschpflichkeit des Menschen und der Welt auf originelle Weise reformuliert. Teil I argumentiert, dass unsere Selbstbeschreibung die Dualitt der Ersten-Person-Perspektive und der Dritten-Person-Perspektive ernst nehmen sollte und zwar nicht nur in einem epistemologischen, sondern auch in einem ontologischen Sinn. Das jedoch fhrt, so wird gezeigt, zu einer ontologischen Beschreibung des Menschen (...) als unauflslicher Einheit von gegenstzlichen Bestimmungen bzw. Eigenschaften. Diese Einheit von Gegenstzen verlangt nach einer angemessenen Erklrung; einer Erklrung, welche die hartnckigen Probleme des Substanz- und Eigenschaftsdualismus ebenso vermeidet wie des reduktiven Monismus. Teil II stellt das Konzept der relationalen Ontologie in Grundzgen vor, whrend Teil III einer Erklrung des Leib-Seele-Problems auf der Grundlage dieses ontologischen Entwurfs gibt.SUMMARYThis paper presents a new approach in order to clarify the mind-body-problem. To reach this goal, the mind-body-problem is linked with Peter Knauer's outline of a relational ontology, which reformulates the creaturality of man and world in an inventive way. In the first part I argue that our self-description should take seriously the duality of first-person- and third-person-perspective not only in an epistemic but also in an ontological sense. This leads to an ontological description of man as an indissoluble unity of opposite attributes or properties. This unity of opposites requires an adequate explanation; one, which avoids the adamant problems of substance- and property-dualism as well as of reductive monism. Part II represents the main features of the concept of relational ontology, while part III gives an explanation of the mind-body-problem on the basis of this concept. (shrink)

Ernst Cassirer occupies a unique space in Twentieth-century philosophy. A great liberal humanist, his multi-faceted work spans the history of philosophy, the philosophy of science, intellectual history, aesthetics, epistemology, the study of language and myth, and more. The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms is Cassirer's most important work. It was first published in German in 1923, the third and final volume appearing in 1929. Are people selfish or altruistic? Throughout history this question has been answered on the basis of much introspection and little evidence. It has been at the heart of many controversial debates in politics, science, and philosophy. Some of the most fundamental questions concerning our evolutionary origins, our social relations, and the organization of society are centered around issues of altruism and selfishness. Experimental evidence indicates that human altruism is a powerful force and unique in the animal world. However, there is (...) much individual heterogeneity and the interaction between altruists and selfish individuals is key for understanding the evolutionary dynamics as well as the proximate patterns of human cooperation. Depending on the environment, a minority of altruists can force a majority of selfish individuals to cooperate or, conversely, a few egoists can induce a large number of altruists to defect. Current gene-based evolutionary theories cannot explain important patterns of human altruism pointing towards the need for theories of cultural evolution and gene-culture coevolution. (shrink)

The following lecture on Monism is an informal address delivered extemporaneously on October 9, 1892, at Altenburg, on the seventy-fifth anniversary of the "Naturforschende Gesellschaft des Osterlandes." The immediate occasion of it was a previous address delivered by Professor Schlesinger of Vienna on "Scientific Articles of Faith." This philosophical discourse contained, with reference to the weightiest and most important problems of scientific investigation, much that was indisputable; but it also contained some assertions that challenged immediate rejoinder and a statement of (...) the opposite view. If cooperative dispositions are associated with unique phenotypic features (’green beards’), cooperative individuals can be identified. Therefore, cooperative individuals can avoid exploitation by defectors by cooperating exclusively with other cooperative individuals; consequently, cooperators flourish and defectors die out. Experimental evidence suggests that subjects, who are given the opportunity to make promises in face-to-face interactions, are indeed able to predict the partner’s behavior better than chance in a subsequent Prisoners’ Dilemma. This evidence has been interpreted as evidence in favor of green (...) beard approaches to the evolution of human cooperation. Here we argue, however, that the evidence does not support this interpretation. We show, in particular, that the existence of conditional cooperation renders subjects' choices in the Prisoners’ Dilemma predictable. However, although subjects predict behavior better than chance, selfish individuals earn higher incomes than conditional cooperators. Thus, although subjects may predict other players’ choices better than chance evolution favors the selfish subjects, i.e., the experimental evidence does not support the green beard approach towards the evolution of cooperation.
