The Evaluation Scale: Exploring Decisions About Societal Impact in Peer Review Panels.Gemma E. Derrick & Gabrielle N. Samuel - 2016 - Minerva 54 (1):75-97.
Realising the societal gains from publicly funded health and medical research requires a model for a reflexive evaluation precedent for the societal impact of research. This research explores UK Research Excellence Framework evaluators’ values and opinions and assessing societal impact, prior to the assessment taking place. Specifically, we discuss the characteristics of two different impact assessment extremes – the “quality-focused” evaluation and “societal impact-focused” evaluation. We show the wide range of evaluator views about impact, and that these views could be (...)

The Ethics Ecosystem: Personal Ethics, Network Governance and Regulating Actors Governing the Use of Social Media Research Data.Gabrielle Samuel, Gemma E. Derrick & Thed van Leeuwen - 2019 - Minerva 57 (3):317-343.
This paper examines the consequences of a culture of “personal ethics” when using new methodologies, such as the use of social media sites as a source of data for research. Using SM research as an example, this paper explores the practices of a number of actors and researchers within the “Ethics Ecosystem” which as a network governs ethically responsible research behaviour. In the case of SM research, the ethical use of this data is currently in dispute, as even though it (...)

  8. Will the Real CRT Please Stand Up? The Dangers of Philosophical Contributions to CRT.Tommy J. Curry - 2009 - Crit: A Critical Legal Studies Journal:1-47.
The recent pop culture iconography of the Critical Race Theory (CRT) label has attracted more devoted (white) fans than a 90s boy band. In philosophy, this trend is evidenced by the growing number of white feminists who extend their work in gender analogically to questions of race and identity. The trend is further evidenced by the unchecked use of the CRT label to describe (1) any work dealing with postcolonial authors like W.E.B. Du Bois and Frantz Fanon or (2) the (...)

Reading Gauss in the Computer Age: On the U.S. Reception of Gauss’s Number Theoretical Work.Maarten Bullynck - 2009 - Archive for History of Exact Sciences 63 (5):553-580.
C.F Gauss’s computational work in number theory attracted renewed interest in the twentieth century due to, on the one hand, the edition of Gauss’s Werke, and, on the other hand, the birth of the digital electronic computer. The involvement of the U.S. American mathematicians Derrick Henry Lehmer and Daniel Shanks with Gauss’s work is analysed, especially their continuation of work on topics as arccotangents, factors of n2 + a2, composition of binary quadratic forms. In general, this strand in Gauss’s (...)

    Dialética e experiência.Franklin Leopoldo E. Silva - 2005 - Doispontos 2 (2).

How Shall I Live My Life?: On Liberating the Earth From Civilization.Derrick Jensen - 2008 - Pm Press.
In this collection of interviews, Derrick Jensen discusses the destructive dominant culture with ten people who have devoted their lives to undermining it. Whether it is Carolyn Raffensperger and her radical approach to public health, or Thomas Berry on perceiving the sacred; be it Kathleen Dean Moore reminding us that our bodies are made of mountains, rivers, and sunlight; or Vine Deloria asserting that our dreams tell us more about the world than science ever can, the activists and philosophers (...)

Understanding and Its Role in Inquiry.Benjamin T. Rancourt - unknown
In this dissertation, I argue that understanding possesses unique epistemic value. I propose and defend a novel account of understanding that I call the management account of understanding, which is the view that an agent A understands a subject matter S just in case A has the ability to extract the relevant information and exploit it with the relevant cognitive capacities to answer questions in S. Since inquiry is the process of raising and answering questions, I argue that without understanding, (...)

    Rethinking Micro-Level Exploitation.Derrick Gray - 2020 - Social Theory and Practice 46 (3):515-546.
This paper argues that, at least in the context of employment, we should reconsider the applicability of the dominant framework in the contemporary literature on exploitation, which views exploitation as a micro-level moral wrong. I present a novel argument showing that these micro-level theories share commitments inconsistent with taking exploitation seriously as a moral wrong. Given the difficulties these theories face, I argue that we should pursue a structural theory of exploitation, and I give a brief sketch of what such (...)
