Waldo (philosophy, Susquehanna U.) proposes that spiritual inquiry is not a matter of formulating and defending a theory of knowledge, but of cultivating a certain kind of character and style of thinking.

Abstract. In Science and Spirituality, Michael Ruse attempts to reconcile traditional Christianity and modern science by arguing that Christianity addresses questions that lie beyond the domain of science. I argue that Ruse's solution raises a number of problems that render it unsatisfactory for both the scientist and believer. First, despite his objections to “God of the gaps” arguments, his own strategy for identifying those questions that are beyond the limits of science seems to raise the problem in a new form. (...) Second, what Ruse offers as evidence for the limits of science is better construed as evidence for deep disagreements among scientists and as such does not support his claims about the limits of science. Third, in aiming to establish their independence, Ruse subordinates religion to science. Finally, his support of traditional theology as a mode of religious understanding might cause concern for those who believe that certain kinds of theological reflection are at odds with scientific thinking. In Plato's dialogue the Euthyphro , Socrates poses a question that has come to be known as the ‘Euthyphro dilemma’. Since the first formulation of this problem is surely the best, I will quote from Socrates himself: … For consider: is the holy loved by the gods because it is holy? Or is it holy because it is loved by the gods?

In his discourse The Glory of Being Human, Kierkegaard dons his spiritual therapist hat not only to help us recognize the futility of worldly ways of distraction but also to appreciate other more stable and edifying kinds of diversions which he calls ‘divine distractions,’ for instance, contemplating the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. Although the discourse The Glory of Being Human was published in 1847, two years before The Sickness Unto Death, Kierkegaard introduces in an (...) edifying fashion some of the main themes developed by Anti-Climacus in the later pseudonymous work published in 1849. So as his angst-ridden reader finally settles down to find edifying distraction in reading this discourse, he will soon discover that the cure for his anxiety cannot be found in escaping from the self in worldly aesthetic distractions, but rather by attending to ‘divine distractions’ in a life of worship and work before God. In his treatiseOn Prayer Origen raises and answers four objections against prayer. In this essay I examine the Stoic strategies to which Origen appeals in his attempt to answer them. His defense of the claim that providence and prayer are compatible assumes a standard account of freedom and human agency common among the Stoics of his time. In addition to appealing to the standard compatibilist view of human agency found in the Stoics, Origen’s presentation and response to these questions turns (...) out to be reminiscent of Stoic attempts to resolve those thorny issues surrounding fate presented in the so-called ‘Idle Argument’.
