    Marking Shifts in Human Research Ethics in the Development of Biobanking.D. Chalmers, M. Burgess, K. Edwards, J. Kaye, E. M. Meslin & D. Nicol - 2015 - Public Health Ethics 8 (1):63-71.
Biobanks are increasingly being created specifically for research purposes. Concomitantly, we are seeing significant and evolving shifts in research ethics in relation to biobanking. Three discrete shifts are identified in this article. The first extends the ethical focus beyond the protection of human subjects to the promotion of broader community benefits of research utilizing biobanked resources, and an expectation that these benefits will be shared. The second involves the evolution of the traditional consent paradigm for future research uses of biobanks (...)

Who Needs Special Needs? On the Constitutionality of Collecting DNA and Other Biometric Data From Arrestees.D. H. Kaye - 2006 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 34 (2):188-198.
Several commentators have argued that the police practice of taking DNA samples during custodial arrests is an unconstitutional search and seizure. This article proposes a “biometric identification exception” to the warrant and probable-cause requirements of the Fourth Amendment that would encompass certain systems of DNA sampling on arrest.

A significant share of the U.S. federal R&D budget is devoted to large-scale, complex technological systems commonly referred to as "big science. " Over the last two decades, these systems have continued to grow in size, complexity, development time, and cost. At the same time, political changes in the United States, particularly the concern over government spending and the federal budget deficit, have made it more difficult for proponents to secure and preserve support for these programs over their lifetimes. Using (...)

  24. Wittgenstein and Moral Philosophy.Paul Johnston, D. Z. Phillips, Philip Shields & B. R. Tilghman - 1989 - Journal of Religious Ethics 22 (2):407-431.
Recent books by Paul Johnston, D. Z. Phillips, Philip Shields, and B. R. Tilghman all depict Wittgenstein as centrally concerned with ethics, but they range from representing his main works as expressing and advocating a particular religious-ethical outlook to arguing that his work has no ethical content but aims primarily to clarify such logical distinctions as that between ethical and empirical judgments. All four books raise the question about the moral philosopher's proper role, and each suggests a rather different (...)

Organizational Corruption as Theodicy.D. Christopher Kayes - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 67 (1):51-62.
This paper draws on Weber’s theodicy problem to define organizational corruption as the emerging discrepancy between experience and normative expectation. Theodicy describes the attempts to explain this discrepancy. The paper presents four normative principles enlisted by observers to respond to perceived corruption: moral dilemma, detachment, systematic regulation, and normative controls. Consistent with social construction, these justifications work to either reaffirm or challenge prevailing social norms in the face of confusing events. An exemplar case involves perceived corruption in the business of (...)

    The GMO-Nanotech (Dis)Analogy?W. D. Kay & Ronald Sandler - 2006 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 26 (1):57-62.
The genetically-modified-organism experience has been prominent in motivating science, industry, and regulatory communities to address the social and ethical dimensions of nanotechnology. However, there are some significant problems with the GMO-nanotech analogy. First, it overstates the likelihood of a GMO-like backlash against nanotechnology. Second, it invites misconceptions about the reasons for public engagement and social and ethical issues research as well as their appropriate roles in nanotech research, development, application, commercialization, and regulatory processes. After an explication of the standard GMO-Nanotech (...)

Who Needs Special Needs? On the Constitutionality of Collecting DNA and Other Biometric Data From Arrestees.D. H. Kaye - 2006 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 34 (2):188-198.
For years, the collection of DNA samples from individuals arrested for criminal misconduct has been advocated by police officials and endorsed by politicians. Louisiana, Virginia, California, and South Dakota have adopted laws to add DNA profiles derived from these samples to their DNA databases. Texas provides for DNA to be taken after indictment but before conviction. Although the U.S. Department of Justice initially shied away from the issue, the DNA Fingerprint Act of 20055 authorizes the collection of DNA from individuals (...)

Management buyouts occur when incumbent managers (typically in association with third party investors) purchase all of a firm's outstanding stock and remove it from public trading. Prior ethical analyses of such activities have ignored the fact that large numbers of such buyouts return to public trading. The ethical implications of management buyout activity can be more fully understood if the entire buyout process is considered, beginning with the time the firm is taken private until it is returned to public trading. Exploiting Human and Mouse Transcriptomic Data: Identification of Circadian Genes and Pathways Influencing Health.Emma E. Laing, Jonathan D. Johnston, Carla S. Möller-Levet, Giselda Bucca, Colin P. Smith, Derk-Jan Dijk & Simon N. Archer - 2015 - Bioessays 37 (5):544-556.
The power of the application of bioinformatics across multiple publicly available transcriptomic data sets was explored. Using 19 human and mouse circadian transcriptomic data sets, we found that NR1D1 and NR1D2 which encode heme‐responsive nuclear receptors are the most rhythmic transcripts across sleep conditions and tissues suggesting that they are at the core of circadian rhythm generation. Analyzes of human transcriptomic data show that a core set of transcripts related to processes including immune function, glucocorticoid signalling, and lipid metabolism is (...)
