The role of trait affiliation in human community.Michael Glassman & Cynthia K. Buettner - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (3):354-354.
This commentary speaks to the relationship between Depue & Marrone-Strupinsky's (D&M-S's) concept of trait affiliation and affiliative memory and the formation of human community, especially among peer groups. The target article suggests a model for how and why dynamic communities form in a number of disparate contexts and under a number of circumstances.

Academic Integrity in the Information Age: Virtues of Respect and Responsibility.Tracy S. Manly, Lori N. K. Leonard & Cynthia K. Riemenschneider - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 127 (3):579-590.
This study examines business students’ ethical awareness for two virtues needed to maintain academic integrity, respect, and responsibility. Using the multidimensional ethics survey, five dimensions were measured for six scenarios representing student behaviors using Information Technology . The results indicate that students are ethically aware in respect situations, but are more neutral in responsibility situations. Of the five ethical dimensions, moral equity and relativism appear to be the strongest influences in academic integrity scenarios utilizing IT. This study provides guidance for (...)

Ethical Behavioral Intention in an Academic Setting: Models and Predictors.Lori N. K. Leonard, Cynthia K. Riemenschneider & Tracy S. Manly - 2017 - Journal of Academic Ethics 15 (2):141-166.
This study examines the theory of planned behavior and the multidimensional ethics scale. Variables from both are included to determine which ones significantly correlate with student ethical behavioral intention in an academic setting. Using a survey, responses are collected from undergraduate business students from two southwestern universities in the United States using a scenario-based approach, looking at individual situations and group situations. SmartPLS was used to assess the results for four scenarios. From the theory of planned behavior, attitude was a (...)

Logic, ethics, and rhetoric of research on rape: A reply to Mosher and bond.James H. Korn, Timothy J. Huelsman & Cynthia K. Shinabarger Reed - 1992 - Ethics and Behavior 2 (2):123 – 128.
Mosher and Bond (this issue) suggest experimental designs that are not appropriate for the research purposes they criticize. In defending their own research, they make contradictory statements about the realism of their guided imagery procedure for simulating rape. They present data that we believe provide evidence for the possibility that wrongful harm occurred in their previous research. We assert our right to study the ethics of research and object to specious charges of having threatened sexual freedom and being associated with (...)

Perceived ethicality of guided imagery in rape research.Jamess H. Korn, Timothy J. Huelsman, Cynthia K. Shinabarger Reed & Michelle Aiello - 1992 - Ethics and Behavior 2 (1):1-14.
In our first study, undergraduate students (30 men, 30 women) evaluated the ethical acceptability of two previously published studies that used guided imagery in rape situations. In one, women imagined themselves as rape victims; in the other, men imagined themselves as rapist. Most students rated the research acceptable, but there was a significant interaction (g < .05): Women found the study of women as victim less ethical, and men found the study of men as rapist less ethical. In our second (...)

Thematic Integration Impairments in Primary Progressive Aphasia: Evidence From Eye-Tracking.Matthew Walenski, Jennifer E. Mack, M. Marsel Mesulam & Cynthia K. Thompson - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14.
Primary progressive aphasia is a degenerative disease affecting language while leaving other cognitive facilities relatively unscathed. The agrammatic subtype of PPA is characterized by agrammatic language production with impaired comprehension of noncanonical filler-gap syntactic structures, such as object-relatives [e.g., The sandwich that the girl ate was tasty], in which the filler is displaced from the object position within the relative clause to a position preceding both the verb and the agent and is replaced by a gap linked with the filler. Elementary Students Represent Classroom Democratic Citizenship.Cynthia Szymanski Sunal, Lynn Allison Kelley, Andrea K. Minear & Dennis W. Sunal - 2011 - Journal of Social Studies Research 35 (2):191-216.
Students in 80 kindergarten to grade six classrooms photographed and captioned experiences in class which they identified as examples of democratic citizenship education. With the assistance of a teacher candidate placed in their classroom for a semester, students chose and captioned five of the photographs they considered to best represent demonstrate citizenship education. Four main categories of citizenship events emerged describing key elements associated with democratic citizenship education; shared decision making, participating in a learner-oriented classroom context in which students have (...)

As portrayed in Plato's Apology,' Socrates was the conscience of Athens, a thoughtful and courageous man whose life was devoted to the pursuit of wisdom. Extreme Gradient Boosting Algorithm for Predicting Shear Strengths of Rockfill Materials.Mahmood Ahmad, Ramez A. Al-Mansob, Kazem Reza Kashyzadeh, Suraparb Keawsawasvong, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri, Irfan Jamil & Arnold C. Alguno - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-11.
For the safe and economical construction of embankment dams, the mechanical behaviour of the rockfill materials used in the dam’s shell must be analyzed. The characterization of rockfill materials with specified shear strength is difficult and expensive due to the presence of particles greater than 500 mm in diameter. This work investigates the feasibility of using an extreme gradient boosting computing paradigm to estimate the shear strength of rockfill materials. To train and validate the proposed XGBoost model, a total of (...)

Enhancement of K-means clustering in big data based on equilibrium optimizer algorithm.Omar Saber Qasim, Zakariya Yahya Algamal & Sarah Ghanim Mahmood Al-Kababchee - 2023 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 32 (1).
Data mining’s primary clustering method has several uses, including gene analysis. A set of unlabeled data is divided into clusters using data features in a clustering study, which is an unsupervised learning problem. Data in a cluster are more comparable to one another than to those in other groups. However, the number of clusters has a direct impact on how well the K-means algorithm performs. In order to find the best solutions for these real-world optimization issues, it is necessary to (...)

    Illusionist Integrated Information Theory.K. J. McQueen - 2019 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 26 (5-6):141-169.
The integrated information theory is a promising theory of consciousness. However, there are several problems with IIT's axioms and postulates. Moreover, IIT entails that some twodimensional grids of identical logic gates have more consciousness than humans. Many have found this prediction to be implausible, and as will be argued here, this prediction also exacerbates the so-called 'hard problem of consciousness'. Recently, it has been argued that if we treat the phenomenological aspects of consciousness as an illusion, we can avoid the (...)

Pragmatism as a teaching philosophy in the safety sciences: a higher education pedagogy perspective.K. Klockner, P. Shields, M. Pillay & K. Ames - 2021 - Safety Science 138.
The education of safety science professionals is a key requirement to ensuring the ongoing recognition of Occupational Health and Safety as a profession. Safety science educators, at some point in their academic career, are required to align with an appropriate teaching philosophy, however this important aspect of education pedagogy rarely receives scholarly attention in the safety sciences. Therefore, this article makes the case for philosophical pragmatism as an overarching teaching philosophy that works well within the evidence informed safety science practice (...)

Traditionally the domain of scientists, the history of science became an independent field of inquiry only in the twentieth century and mostly after the Second World War. This process of emancipation was accompanied by a historiographical departure from previous, 'scientistic' practices, a transformation often attributed to influences from sociology, philosophy and history. Similarly, the liberal humanists who controlled the Cambridge History of Science Committee after 1945 emphasized that their contribution lay in the special expertise they, as trained historians, brought to (...)
