  1. Out on a Limb: The Ethical Management of Body Integrity Identity Disorder.Christopher James Ryan - 2009 - Neuroethics 2 (1):21-33.
Body integrity identity disorder (BIID), previously called apotemnophilia, is an extremely rare condition where sufferers desire the amputation of a healthy limb because of distress associated with its presence. This paper reviews the medical and philosophical literature on BIID. It proposes an evidenced based and ethically informed approach to its management. Amputation of a healthy limb is an ethically defensible treatment option in BIID and should be offered in some circumstances, but only after clarification of the diagnosis and consideration of (...)

Schopenhauer on Idealism, Indian and European.Christopher Ryan - 2015 - Philosophy East and West 65 (1):18-35.
This article is an examination of Schopenhauer’s evaluation of the comparative philosophical merits of modern European and ancient Indian idealism. Schopenhauer was an enthusiastic advocate of Indian wisdom, but it is rarely noted that he excluded it from the history of philosophy proper. Although he traced the origin of the “fundamental” viewpoint of idealism to the ancient ṛṣis of India, he also maintained that it had not received its properly philosophical articulation and defence until Kant. But when we probe beyond (...)

Schopenhauer's Philosophy of Religion: The Death of God and the Oriental Renaissance.Christopher Ryan - 2010 - Leuven: Peeters.
This book is the first comprehensive study of Schopenhauer's philosophy of religion. It develops a contextual account of Schopenhauer's relation to the religions of India by placing his interpretation of their main doctrines within the perspective of his diagnosis of the religious situation in nineteenth-century Europe, and his revised conception of the proper content and methods of metaphysical philosophy in the wake of Kant. It shows that Schopenhauer's encounter with the religions of India was the stimulus for his formulation of (...)

Universal Human Traits: The Holy Grail of Evolutionary Psychology.Christopher Ryan & Cacilda Jethá - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (2):292-293.
Although the search for universal human traits is necessarily the principle focus of researchers in evolutionary psychology, the habitual reliance on undergraduate students introduces profound doubts concerning resulting data. Furthermore, the absence of relevant data from foraging societies undermines claims of cross-cultural universality in this paper and in many others.

Rationality and the Wish to Die—a Response to Clarke.Christopher James Ryan - 2000 - Journal of Medical Ethics 26 (3):217-217.
sirIn a scholarly and thought-provoking paper, Clarke sets out to debunk the concept of “rational suicide” as nonsensical.1 His motivation in this is to undermine any support that the notion of rational suicide might give to a “categorical right to suicide”. If his enterprise were successful, however, it would go far beyond the “rights issue” and would have a profound impact on all arguments raised in support of euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide.Clarke's major thrust might be termed the argument from posthumous (...)

One Flu Over The Cuckoo’s Nest: Comparing Legislated Coercive Treatment for Mental Illness with That for Other Illness. [REVIEW]Christopher James Ryan - 2011 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 8 (1):87-93.
Many of the world’s mental health acts, including all Australian legislation, allow for the coercive detention and treatment of people with mental illnesses if they are deemed likely to harm themselves or others. Numerous authors have argued that legislated powers to impose coercive treatment in psychiatric illness should pivot on the presence or absence of capacity not likely harm, but no Australian act uses this criterion. In this paper, I add a novel element to these arguments by comparing the use (...)

  13. A Brief History of Australian Catholic Youth Ministry-Part I.Christopher Ryan - 2019 - The Australasian Catholic Record 96 (4):431.
It is readily apparent to anyone ministering to Australian adolescents in the early twenty-first century that their efforts take place against the backdrop of a general decline in belief and practice among Catholics, and among young Catholics in particular. Rather than simply join the chorus of lament at the decline of young people's belief and participation in the life of the church, this article seeks to understand better the present 'face' or 'faces' of youth ministry by considering the historical relationship (...)
