ABSTRACTThe disadvantaged have incentives to commit crime, and to develop criminogenic dispositions, that limit the extent to which their co-citizens can blame them for breaking the law. This is true regardless of whether the causes of criminality are mainly “structural” or “cultural.” We need not assume that society as a whole is unjust in order to accept this conclusion. And doing so would neither stigmatize nor otherwise disrespect the disadvantaged.

The term schizotypy is used to describe a diverse range of characteristics symptomatic of schizotypal personality disorder and borderline personality disorder. An emerging body of research is concerned with the relationship between schizotypy and religiosity. Mixed findings suggest a gender-specific, weak positive association between schizotypy and religiosity. The present aim was to clarify the relationship between schizotypy and religiosity by employing a multidimensional measure of prayer as a measure of religiosity. A sample of 371 Irish respondents completed the Measure of (...) Prayer Type and the Schizotypal Personality and Borderline Personality Scales. Multiple regression showed that Magical Thinking uniquely predicted all prayer types, controlling for age and gender. (shrink)

The primary aim was to assess the role of mental and physical health of COVID-19 and its psychological impact in the general population of Pakistan during the first wave of COVID-19. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant predictive association among socio-demographic variables, psychological impact and mental health status resulting from COVID-19, and poor self-reported physical health would be significantly associated with adverse psychological impact and poor mental health status because of COVID-19. A cross-sectional survey research design was (...) used in which 1,361 respondents were sampled online during lockdown imposed in the country. The Impact of Events Scale-Revised was used to assess the psychological impact of COVID-19, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales was used to assess participants’ mental health status. 18% of the respondents reported moderate to severe event-specific distress, 22.6% reported moderate to severely extreme depression, 29% reported moderate to extreme anxiety, and 12.1% reported moderate to extreme stress. Female gender, having graduate-level education, currently studying, and self-reported physical symptoms were significantly associated with higher levels of psychological impact exhibited through higher scores on the IES-R and poorer mental health status exhibited through higher scores on the DASS-21. As a consequence, most world religions proclaim that life continues beyond the grave, and they have depicted the Hereafter in a variety of forms. These various conceptions constitute answers to the most perplexing spiritual questions: Will we remember our former lives in the Hereafter? Will we have bodies? Can bodiless souls recognise each other? Will we continue to have personal identity? Will we be punished or rewarded, or absorbed (...) into the Godhead? I was not eating, could not hold anything down, and had no energy. It was easy enough for my pediatrician at the time to attribute this to a common virus. This was not sitting well with my parents, however. My mother decided to take me to the emergency room and get me evaluated (...) there. The doctors there assessed me and sent me back home with a medication to help with the nausea. Later that evening, my mom gave me that medication, and it caused a seizure. She called 911, and I was brought by ambulance to the hospital. After an extensive workup, it was determined I was in liver failure related to an aneurysm in my hepatic artery. I was going to require a liver transplant if I were to live. I had to be transferred to another hospital in New York from the hospital near our home in Connecticut. I do not remember any of the details leading up to this after the seizure. I do not remember being told I needed a liver transplant and I do not remember going into surgery.My memories of these events start after the surgery. What I remember is being in the pediatric ICU and being told my mother was able to donate part of her liver to me. I had quite a lengthy recovery after this point. I spent about two months in the hospital and then went to a rehab facility where I would have to learn how to walk again and regain my strength.By the time I was discharged from the rehab facility, I had missed the last half of my 5th-grade year. By the time I was able to return to school, it was already several months into 6th grade. Slowly but surely, life was returning to normal. I was able to get back to doing the things an eleven-year-old should be doing. For twelve years after this initial transplant, I was in great health, my transplant team was happy with how I was doing, and I just required annual checkups after a while. Unfortunately, I saw as a child how fast things can change. This was once again the case. [End Page 126]I was in my last week of college classes, just about to finish my Bachelor’s degree in nursing and looking forward to starting my career as a nurse in the neuro ICU. However, I once again became acutely ill with seemingly flu-like symptoms. After a few days of dealing with these symptoms, my mother brought me to the emergency room. When we got to the emergency room, they did some initial testing and told me I would need to be admitted for antibiotic therapy. The first thought that came to my mind was, “Would I be able to be discharged in time to take my final exams next week?”Once I arrived in my hospital room, I met with my transplant team. They delivered the grave news. The imaging they had done showed that the graft artery from my original liver transplant as a child had failed. The graft had thrombosed and I had infected bilomas in my liver. Now, twelve years later, I would need to be re-listed for another transplant. I was devastated and in disbelief. I recall telling my mother, who was with me at the time, that we should hold off on telling my dad, thinking this could not be possible, and we shouldn’t worry him over something that was not necessarily true. Unfortunately, however, this was my reality. I would go on to wait a little over two years for the perfect liver from a deceased donor.The road to being listed and ultimately having a repeat transplant was not without its challenges and bumps in the road. Previous empirical studies concerned with the association between paranormal beliefs and conventional religiosity have produced conflicting evidence. Drawing on Rice's distinction between classic paranormal beliefs and religious paranormal beliefs, the present study proposed a modified form of the Tobacyk Revised Paranormal Belief Scale to produce separate scores for these two forms of paranormal belief, styled ‘religious paranormal beliefs’ and ‘classic paranormal beliefs’. Data provided by a sample of 143 undergraduate students in Northern Ireland and Wales, who completed the Francis Scale (...) of Attitude toward Christianity alongside the Tobacyk Revised Paranormal Belief Scale, demonstrated that conventional religiosity is positively correlated with religious paranormal beliefs, but independent of classic paranormal beliefs. These findings provide a clear framework within which previous conflicting evidence can be interpreted. It is recommended that future research should distinguish clearly between these two forms of paranormal beliefs and that the Tobacyk Revised Paranormal Beliefs Scale should be routinely modified to detach the four religious paranormal belief items from the total scale score. There is a widely acknowledged, albeit still imprecisely defined, connection between the ‘calculatory’ analyses of local motion developed within the fourteenth century ‘Merton School’ and Galileo Galilei's later treatment of natural motion. The present essay is intended to cast some light on the possible sources and significance of Galileo's putative familiarity with the medieval discussions through a study of the fortunes of the most typical representative of the School, Richard Swineshead. Particular attention is paid to the writings of such scholastic (...) philosophers of Galileo's day as Francisco Toledo, Francesco Piccolomini, Iacopo Zabarella, Francesco Buonamico and Scipione Chiaramonte. Somewhat unexpectedly, it emerges that such authors possessed only the most fragmentary and attenuated knowledge of Swineshead's ideas. The implications of this circumstance, especially insofar as it renders Galileo's familiarity with the Merton tradition even more problematical, are discussed briefly. (shrink)

A sample of 311 undergraduate students in Germany completed German translations of the short form Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire together with the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity. The data demonstrated that psychoticism is fundamental to individual differences in religiosity, while religiosity is independent of both extraversion and neuroticism. These findings are consistent with those from a series of studies employing the same measure of religiosity among school pupils, students and adults in the UK.

Recently three studies have reported on the test-retest reliability of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity; however, these studies were limited to comparatively small samples . The present study examined the temporal stability of the 7-item version of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity over a 15-week period among a sample of 581 English children aged between 10 and 12 years.
