Managerialism impacted North American churches long before South and Central American churches, due to both the greater affinity for managerialism in Protestant ecclesial structures, and to the earlier development of advanced capitalism in North America. The most recent managerialist developments in Catholic churches of both continents have manifested themselves in the curial and Episcopal treatment of the clerical pedophilia scandals, while the developments in Pentecostal churches, especially in Latin America, have emanated from lower structural levels. Feminists look critically at any infliction of pain on others, usually requiring that it be consensual, and often both consensual and for the benefit of the person afflicted. Most torture of women is not recognized under official definitions of torture because it is not performed by or with the consent of (government) officials. Women are, however, also victims of torture under official definitions as military or civilian prisoners or as members of defeated populations in war, and are more often subjected (...) to sexual torture, which until recently has not been understood either as torture or even a war crime. Rape, especially serial gang rape, it is argued, should be understood as torture, as the essence of torture is the use of severe pain to obscure or obliterate the victim's sense of agency. (shrink)

THIS ESSAY PROPOSES THAT EVERYDAY REFERENCES TO HEROES AND suicides share a lack of critical common sense, and that ethicists should initiate critical discourse on these issues to lift the level of popular reflection. The absence of critical discourse serves the interests of powerful social groups and organizations to the disadvantage of other social groups. The absence of critical discourse is further supported by broad social suspicion of decision making by ordinary individuals resulting in social preference for trusting elites, even (...) when the arguments supporting such preferences are recognized as flawed or untrue. In this article, the activity of conscience around abortion serves as an example to illustrate the thesis that adequate moral decisions require knowing our feelings. Coming to know how and why we feel as we do is a complicated process involving psychoanalytic exploration of the unconscious. In abortion it involves coming face to face with our feelings about our mothers, about motherhood, and about our own infancy and childhood. Failure to come to grips with such feelings allows our unconscious to (...) disguise our feelings to ourselves, and thus to manipulate our moral decisions. (shrink)

Because critics of liberation theology have failed to note the existence of alternative contexts for doing theology, they do not recognize alternative ways of testing theological truth.

Having inherited the language of inalienable human rights from a cultural world we no longer inhabit, the justice community must attend with care to major changes in the social framework within which it continues to invoke such notions. Two contemporary paradigm shifts make plain the challenges involved in relying on the conceptual currency of modernity to address a postmodern world: (1) the changing view of sexual identity highlights the hazards as well as the freedoms involved in the right to self-determination (...) and (2) the shift of the threats associated with oppressive power from the nation-state to economic institutions not only calls into question the efficacy of addressing rights claims to the political state but also, coupled with a communicative environment of pervasive simulation, opens the way for questioning the very possibility of framing rights claims at all. Though it is often taken for granted that feminists necessarily must condemn the exclusion of women from the Roman Catholic priesthood, the author demonstrates that the "politics of difference," if pursued consistently, reopens this question. International feminist arguments for honoring gender differences, the teachings of John Paul II concerning women, and Catholic social justice teachings, taken jointly, suggest that the current Catholic exclusion of women from the priesthood is unjust not because the reservation of a social role to a single (...) sex is inherently unacceptable, but because of the asymmetry in power between the roles accorded men and women in the governance of the Catholic Church. To be just, sex-specific reservation of roles must meet the criteria of balance, proportion, power, and particularity. (shrink)

THIS ESSAY EXAMINES GLOBAL WATER PRIVATIZATION EFFORTS IN LIGHT of the environmental teachings of both Islam and Christianity, proposing that although environmental ethics is more developed within Christianity, Islam offers more ethical sources for thinking about water due to the arid climate in which Islam developed. Furthermore, this essay advocates full-cost pricing as necessary to attain closed loop water recycling, maintains that full-cost pricing does not further disadvantage the poor, and argues that full-cost pricing more easily fits Muslim and Christian (...) moral imperatives than present water policies do. THE OCCASION FOR THE ESSAYS RESPONDING TO MANAGING DIVERSITY IN academe follows in response to a challenge issued by Miguel De La Torre in a 2006 plenary panel regarding the invisibility of minority scholars' work in SCE publications. That 2006 panel, which included presentations by De La Torre, Melanie Harris, Gabriel Salgado, and Darryl Trimiew, stimulated discussions in both the Women's Caucus and the meeting of the Board of Directors; this set of essays from a 2008 plenary session and a (...) concurrent session held later in the meeting is the result of those earlier discussions. The two sessions both address diversity: these essays feature minority voices presenting specific proposals for how minority scholarship should and should not be used by majority and other minority scholars; the concurrent session featured a discussion by majority scholars on what whites must do to diversify the society. Our hope is that these essays and the discussions they generate will shed more light on this extremely complex and important issue for the SCE and the institutions in which members work. (shrink)
